not a clanger vid this time. a positive vid this time. one of the classiest hat-tricks you'll ever see. from a player called Guirassy who's tearing it up in Germany. i'd never heard of him , like most people. he's not young, aged 27, always been a 1 in 2 or 1 in 3 man for middling type clubs, but he's just having the season of his life...on fire. 14 goals in 8 lge games, and the quality of his finishes is an absolute joy. oozing class and composure !! . 1st goal ..move starts at 0.25. cleverly reads the bounce of the ball...runs on then a delightful little dink over the keeper. 2nd goal . approx 1.15. great body swerve, which feigned like he was gonna hit it 1st time with his arms up, then just slots it in. 3rd goal . from 1.34. lovely deft touch over the defender then just improvises a header. << look what the g/k does at 1.30. boots it long and it leads to a goal this is from about a month ago. this next one is from about 2 weeks ago. another hat trick. not quite the same standard but still touches of class in everything he does. esp that 3rd one. 1st a pen at 0.54. coolly taken. 2nd at 1.12. decent. 3rd. 1.32 wow. commentator nails it. the little stop is soooo good. the little bits of deception in his play are just fantastic. he's breaking all records at the mo, can he keep it up. Dion has a chance for us to be topscorer, i've got a few pennies on him to do that. JCH has really gone off the boil, is he still in sulk mode after not getting his move.

not noticed many clangers this wk/end. but spotted this one. certain teams are just repeat offenders with this & you know to look more carefully in their games, and this is not Brighton's first appearance on this thread. clanger at 1.44. I see Burnley lost again, but i suppose one of the 2 over-passing clanger prone minnows in the PL had to get something right eventually. a positive role model for us would be someone like Brentford. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/67179273beat Chelsea away AGAIN. nice mix of a manager who has the guts to speak out against clangers, will play it around a bit when needed, will defend deep when needed, or go a bit more direct. a real nice blend. just 31% possession against Chelsea. but 5 shots on target to Chelsea's 2. and it ain't a fluke. (wait for tweet to load below) . done it the last 2 times. winning against teams that are better on paper than you & spent way more than you. don't forget their excellent AWAY win at Man city last year. another terrific blend of direct football, swift counter attacks and doubling up on Haaland with man markers at the back. they murdered City. not just 2-1.. chances for more at 2.08 & 2.59. big chances !! www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/635239168 shots on target to Citeh's 6.

some classic stuff about what this thread is about from article after the Boro cup tie. www.boltonwanderers.news/news/gave-a-good-account-of-ourselves-ian-evatt-on-middlesbrough-defeat/“ The reason we play how we play is because, hopefully, once we get to the next level we can compete because we can manage the ball and sometimes rest in possession. If you spend large spells out of possession against these top Championship teams, eventually you’ll get picked off.“We just needed a little more bravery in the build phase, especially from the keeper. strange blame for the keeper there. not taking enough risks !! i remember hearing the radio interview of this game, and it was bizarre. we don't want to do that sitting back stuff . so you're just aiming to dominate even the big teams despite them having way better players. make it make sense for gods sake !? . what happened to winning the ball within the first 6 seconds or whatever that rule was. amazes me how that gets ignored. it's as if we're petrified to lose possession higher up the pitch ( but strangely not at the back ). what happens if the opposition wants to dominate possession..what happens then. you pack your midfield with ball players but can't get it back. i really don't think these coaches with the dogmatic beliefs, especially at smaller clubs have really thought this through. the ideal would be to have different styles of play up your sleeve and you can vary your game to suit the strengths and weaknesses of your opponent. big teams with big budgets can do what they want ..they don't have to change. as the little guy, you're not going to have it your own way. how is it working for Burnley in the Prem despite spending millions themselves ( see previous posts above about that ). Thomas Frank at Brentford is doing a lot of the stuff i like to see, and he's even managed to avoid getting the "long ball" tag that BSA or even Dyche got stuck with to try and discredit them. like i've said , and BSA too, they have to come up with something to explain why their squad of thoroughbreds has just got turned over by a team spending a fraction of what they have. interesting stuff from Jason Cundy on this ( chelsea fan & ex player). key bit from 4.26. Brentford won more games at Stamford Bridge , since March, than Chelsea . goes on to explain the blueprint for beating Chelsea. defend deep. don't come out and be expansive. Forest did it. Brentford did it. West ham did it at home. they only played Arsenal last week and were 2-0 up against them, as Arsenal were too proud to do this, as he says. ditto Liverpool. drew with them. it's one thing a big team thinking they'll just do the same thing each week, it's absolutely barmy for a smaller team, as we would be in the Prem, or even as a lower budget team in the Ch'ship to do this. what would Evatt do ? well he's already said. he wouldn't defend deep. so he'd lose. another moral victory.

seriously i'm not Thomas Franks agent, but in addition to 3 wins away at Chelsea & away win at Man city, (mentioned in posts above) remember these top results. 1st game in PL. beats Arsenal 2-0. 35% possession. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/58109868home to man utd. beats them 4-0. 33% possesion. 7 shots on target to their (man u's) 4. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/62445694last week , beat Burnley 3-0. situation doesn't demand low block and low possession. so no need to do it. get 50% possession . and 10 shots on target to Burnleys 1. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/67109089

If you want to see a good cock-up with messing about at the back, check out Solihull Moors (our FA Cup opponents) recent game at Southend.
They lost 5-0 – only their second loss of the season – but the second goal is horrendous.
The keeper passes straight to a Southend player in front of an empty net.

"No team in League One has spent more time leading games than Bolton, and only Peterborough United have spent less time trailing." The only piece of GOOD news!

trottersforever.freeforums.net/board/2/views-on-footballi've got a thread on the other side of this board (news/views etc), on Rufford ford & other such calamities. see vid below. and it struck me how i was saying similar on both threads. unnecessary risks and this is classic below. if the waters nice and low...go for it. and i'm not saying never...about playing from the back. there's a time and a place for it. just look at the water in the car at 1.12

the ultimate in arsing about at the back. concede an own goal within 14 secs..from your own kick off. never mind they've had 100% possession so far.

main bit from Alan Brazil at about 1.55 onwards, though even before John Terry is on about it to with jobs he's applied for etc. mentions Brentford as a good example of those not rigidly acting as if there's only one way to play. Ally spot on with his mention of Liverpool. i've mentioned them before on other posts , not on this thread. they are quite happy to go fairly direct. balls in behind to get Salah or Mane ( like they said, when he was there ) exploiting their pace. also Trent just whipping in swirled deep crosses from barely over the halfway line. nice line in this article. www.liverpoolecho.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/jurgen-klopp-liverpool-perfect-playmaker-21771557Once regaining the ball, Klopp instructed his players to focus on trying to score without a second thought, rather than playing safe by passing backwards. He was not interested in starting yet another lengthy possession sequence in the mould of Pep Guardiola, he wanted blood.
"If you win the ball back high up the pitch and you are close to goal, it's only one pass away from a really good opportunity most of the time," Klopp said shortly after arriving in England. "No playmaker in the world can be as good as a good counter-pressing situation. look at his midfield. generally 3 high energy ball winners in there...Milner, Henderson, Fabinho. not going to score or assist many. not creative passers. just win it, and play a decent pass into the space behind.

another keeper spotting passes that SIMPLY AREN'T ON. from EFL trophy last night. peterboro v spurs u21's. peterboro with the near miss at 1.05. some shockers here. even that 1st pass across the face of the goal is well dodgy. then i never like that one to the guy running towards his own goal, with a man inevitably bearing down on him. which makes his pass pretty predictable.

the best way to shake off some these high presses and closing down is a short dribble and knowing how to shield the ball. this first time passing lark isn't really optimal. if you can do all 3 of these ( dribble, shield, pass ) , then you give yourself loads of options. when you see that defender in the last post who always gets the ball facing his own goal, he could actually turn on the ball and go away from goal. he could shield it and go sideways. but 99% of the time they just pass back. utter cringe to watch.
look at how the best in the biz have done it :
1st of all Xavi with his trademark move..the Pelopina. a 360 spin using his low centre of gravity as a positive, where he gets in opponents tied up in knots. not always 360. lesser angles also used effectively. the one at 1.30 is an example of him receiving the ball with someone right up his backside....no fuss..just lets it roll and goes the other way.
David Silva also a real master at this shielding and Pelopina trick
love this from Busquets. his signature move...the dragback in seemingly risky areas. but he did it so that he succeeded or if it slightly failed he made sure he got the free kick.
doesn't get much better than this. el Classico away at the Bernabeu.... nerves of steel to pull off Matador type dummy straight from kick off, totally bamboozling those closing him down.

www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/67213058another Burnley defeat, in the EFL cup this time. 3-0 loss to Everton and some quite awful stats. 62% possession for Burnley, but the most pointless possession ever. it doesn't help them in a defensive or attacking sense. 14 shots for Everton. just 3 for Burnley. 5 on target for Everton. just 1 on target for Burnley. as the bbc match report says..it took til 95 mins for them to force Pickford into a save so it was all irrelevant by then anyway. btw Trafford not in goal. presume just rested for his cup team.

Burnley lost again. 2-0 at home to Palace. 67% possession to Palace's 33%. although they did do better with the main things i look for...shots and shots on target. way more shots than Palace and more on target. but still claimed this unenviable record Pep still sure of this is he ? www.skysports.com/football/news/11095/12836058/pep-guardiola-convinced-vincent-kompany-will-be-man-city-manager-one-day-ahead-of-fa-cup-quarter-final-meetingsome of these who walk into good jobs with top Ch'ship clubs remind me of those Fergie prodigies in the late 90's or 00's who do well in the Ch'ship, with resources, but can't cut it higher up. eg. Mark hughes, Bruce, Roy Keane ( got promotion with sunderland ), Bryan Robson ( promotions with Boro). quite a lot of upsets in the PL today where majority possession doesn't win. Newcastle beat Arsenal with 40%. Everton had just 20% against Brighton got a 1-1 against essentially a top 8 side . leading 1-0 til late in game . 4 on target for Everton. 2 for Brighton. already mentioned Palace win away. and Sheff utd also won with less possession. not in that category of low possession, but Brentford won 3-2 vs West ham . mentioned them during the week, as they can go low possession against the big sides and win (like vs Chelsea last wk ), or higher possession against weaker sides and do it. today they had 59%. obviously west ham probably the bigger & better side than them in terms of resources & players, West hams own counter attacking style reflecting in the poss'n stats.
