There’s no question about it OM, it’s extremely embarrassing to have so many strikers all but one of who can’t be relied upon to score. Even on Saturday our goals came from midfield and defence and you’re right it’s not acceptable but it’s where we are. My issue is that Evatt’s system as far as I can see doesn’t actually fit with most strikers who are charged with running about chasing down defenders rather than positioning themselves in the box ready to score. I’d also prefer a physical presence up front which we’ve never had all through Evatt’s reign and I’d also like some experience and attitude in the team but none of these things will happen under IE who doesn’t like high balls into the box, wants only younger players he can sell on and won’t suffer anyone of experience who might question in any way what he’s doing. When I was a manager I wanted the best people working for me who could get the job done. Age was irrelevant if they could do the job. Now some would say footballs different but I’d disagree.
What we need are players who excel at their specific role be it strikers, keepers, defenders or midfielders. Even within that you can dissect it down to heading, tackling, shooting and any number of skills and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with attempting to find the exact player to fit a particular role but my problem with Evatt and Markham is that they sign players then try to forge them into a role they’re not used to or may not be good at instead of allowing their natural strengths to show through. We’re seeing that now with Collins. I haven’t a clue what he’s supposed to be and from his performances so far neither it appears does he. Evatt now insists he needs a pre season to fit into the team. What? You signed him to get us over the promotion line this year not to be a bit player until next season. Despite all this I’m still a backer of IE until he fails because he’s got us this far and deserves that from us but recent events are certainly leading to questions asked and if blaming failure on injuries is his only excuse I’m afraid it won’t go down well.
