Exeter City v BOLTON…match thread

I know this should be on the Barnsley thread but why did Sheehan take the penalty I know it doesn’t matter cause we scored the follow up but Bod and the mighty Jerome are strikers just saying. Anyway on to Exeter we should win I’m so pissed off I’ll miss this one as I’m away in Rotterdam on a four day mini cruise so I’m going for a 3-1 win COYWM

Sheehan has actually scored a penalty for us.

Nov 12 2021 – League 1 - Bolton 2 Crewe 0.

Sheehan scored the first goal from a penalty.



He also scored the winning penalty when we beat Barnsley on penalties in the EFL Cup in August 2021.

Just for the record, I think Morley is by far our best penalty taker. Not on the pitch on Tuesday!

Wish I could take confidence in the comeback but it seems like we're always playing the "local derby" adage where form goes out of the window. I don't think anyone would be overly surprised if we lost 1-0 controlling most of the match.

They'll want some revenge from the 7 up obviously. I think if we get 2 goals it will make it difficult for Exeter to get anything from so that's my take. Onus get a goal, grab another. Should be OK.

I really hope we go Collins and Vic. Yeah could argue with JDB but why don't we just stick with the two. The Barnsley goal was well worked. Keep at it. Vic needs to know if he gets in the box he will get that quality ball in.

Think Jones for JDC is a happy accident because the best we've done recently from open play was the 2nd half at Northampton with 10. Jones was much better getting up and getting decent deliveries in.

one player i've thought about doing a feature on for a while is the brilliant Harold Blackmore.
5th in our all time highest scorers in the top flight with 111 goals in a 5 yr spell from 1926 to 1931.

born in Devon, and signed from Exeter ( hence the 2nd link above to the Grecians ) .

During 1923/24 Exeter City had managed to score only four goals on their away travels including a spell that saw them score in only one of eleven consecutive games home and away.

The arrival of Silverton born forward Harold Blackmore was to help change the fortunes of the Third Division South club the following season.

His first League goal came in November 1924 when he found the net in a 3-1 away defeat at Aberdare Athletic. During 1925/26 he helped himself to three League hat tricks in 6-1 home successes against Watford and Brentford and a 5-3 defeat of Charlton Athletic.

These feats had attracted many top clubs and during 1926/27 he had scored 25 League goals when the Wanderers visited Exeter in March 1927 for a benefit game on behalf of City's, Robert Pollard.

Exeter won that game 3-2 with Blackmore scoring two of the goals and immediately afterwards the Wanderers secured his signature for a fee of £2,250.

3 seasons of 25+ . ridiculous record !! i've had a good look through many great strikers and very few have managed that feat.
Lofty and Joe Smith despite scoring 255 & 243 in total didn't put 3 seasons together like that !!

Shearer did manage it, and I would guess Greavsie did too.

here's a brief list of ones who didn't.

Dixie Dean 300 + goals. but not 3 seasons of that consistency 25+.
Rooney - no. Aguero- no. Steve Bloomer legendary player (300+ goals) from early 1900's- no ! .
Ian rush- no. Denis Law- no.
Bobby Charlton- no. Lineker- no.

Thierry Henry does manage it with 3 at 25+ but of course Blackmore were 3 at 27+, and HB edges him out on that one !
Kane is another with 3 that are 25+, but not 3 of 27+

Mo Salah - no
Van Nistelrooy- no. Fowler- no. Owen- no. Van Persie- no.

you get the idea. whether it's Steve Bloomer 1900's to 1910, 1920's of Joe Smith or 50's or 60's or modern day, very few are putting together 3 consecutive seasons like that !!


In 1929 Blackmore was a member of the Bolton Wanderers team that beat Portsmouth 2-0 in the FA Cup Final. The goals were scored by Blackmore and Billy Butler.
Blackmore was Bolton Wanderers top goalscorer in the 1929-30 season with 30 goals. He repeated the feat the following season. This included scoring in seven consecutive games. Blackmore had scored 111 goals in 153 games for Bolton by the time he left the club in 1932.

We now are effectively into 10 cup finals.

Not quite everyone being a “must win” but we need 20+ points from these 10 games.

In my mind though, today is a must win. Looking at some of the difficult away games coming up, 3 points is essential today.

Exeter is one of the few grounds I have never been to.
Don’t think I’ll manage it now so it will stay on the “To be visited” list.
Didn't Andy Walker make his debut there - with a goal of course.


There could be a few interesting questions with the team today.

Is Dacres-Cogley fit? Even if fit, does he need a rest? Iredale certainly warrants a start. Williams could quite easily start also. Who plays in midfield?

Looking at the opposition, their home record is poor.

P18 W5 D6 L7 F11 A17 Pts 21.

Just 11 goals in 18 home games.

But only 17 conceded. Only Stevenage and Lincoln have conceded fewer at home.

Almost points towards a 0-0 doesn’t it?



We are better than that though and, as long as we have taken on board how good we are when we attack with pace, we should win comfortably.



I am not 100% convinced by our defending at the moment so expect to concede but we will score – Collins look excellent to me – so I go for a 3-1 win.

That’s actually the team I was hoping for and even allowing for Dion I think that’s our strongest so let’s hope they show that today and put on a good show. Exeter don’t score many so hopefully defensively we shouldn’t be too threatened but we really do need to stop missing gilt edged chances because goal difference really could be worth an extra point come the final table. I expect a comfortable win today so I’ll go super optimistic 0-3 to the Wanderers. The other challengers also have some tough games today, including Barnsley at home to a very stubborn Lincoln so let’s hope they do us a favour?
