My word, if we start at St James Park as we finished at Barnsley, we should thrash these 7-0 again
BUT…. Football’s not like that, is it??
Anyone and everyone beats these don’t they??
Well, erm, no, not true
On the 6th and 10th of February, they had 2 x 2-1 wins against Peterborough and Wigan and let’s not forget their excellent 2-1 win away at Barnsley
They’ve also beaten Wycombe and drawn with Portsmouth, so a win is not a done deal, we’ve really got to turn up and earn this one.
Appears that they’re neither going up nor down, so they’ll play without fear.
They are 2nd for the the lowest goals scored this season in L1
Exeter W - 11 D - 7 L - 18 F - 27 A - 50 GD - 23
I know we say every game is a must win from here on in, but come on, this surely has to be an away win
We’ll be good for at least a 2-1 win, that is my final answer
COYWM Let’s stay second after Saturday ⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️

I know this should be on the Barnsley thread but why did Sheehan take the penalty I know it doesn’t matter cause we scored the follow up but Bod and the mighty Jerome are strikers just saying. Anyway on to Exeter we should win I’m so pissed off I’ll miss this one as I’m away in Rotterdam on a four day mini cruise so I’m going for a 3-1 win COYWM

Other than Charles and Morley I suppose we don’t really have any other designated taker to I suppose it was just who fancied it. Bet he doesn’t step forward next time though it was dreadful pen? 😁

Sheehan scored the first goal from a penalty. He also scored the winning penalty when we beat Barnsley on penalties in the EFL Cup in August 2021.

theanalyst.com/eu/2024/03/who-will-win-promotion-from-league-one/article from 5th March, just before the Barnsley game. the old supercomputer site that got mentioned a year or so ago actually stopped updating at the start of this season. shame, liked that site. showed the bookies odds and predictions in a nice easy to view format. not always perfect predictions but a nice objective guide, that tries to steer a middle course away from the extremes of blind faith optimism & ultra pessimism. projects.fivethirtyeight.com/soccer-predictions/league-one/ < the old site the opta one does a similar job. tends to focus on PL and Ch'ship. Lge 1 rarely gets a mention. extremely tight between us Derby, & Barnsley as you might expect. since we've crept into 2nd, presume edged a bit closer to us. good point about the Sheehan taking the pen, by Chip. i also thought it was a bit odd. obviously he must have proved himself in training or whatever, but with all those strikers it does seem a bit strange. any red blooded striker would normally be beating their way towards the ball. i know we didn't have DC available & all others not on pitch at the time, but it does make you reflect a bit at their attitudes and why they don't get a few more goals.

Just for the record, I think Morley is by far our best penalty taker. Not on the pitch on Tuesday!

odds for the game :
we're odds on. 4/5. Exeter 16/5. draw 3/1
Collins best bet to score. 6/4. Dion same. they keep listing him even though he's unlikely to start again.
their best bet is Mo Eisa 10/3 . used to be a decent player with MK Dons. he's on loan from them.
our record against the bottom 10 sides AWAY is good. beat them all apart from Reading and Burton. generally scoring 2+ per game. even in the Reading and Burton games, we did score once . they weren't blanks.
in contrast Exeters record against the top 10 being home or away is poor. generally lose. 10 defeats so far . the odd draw. they did beat P'boro at home 2-1. & they did draw 0-0 at home to Pompey. in their 5 games played against the top 3 ( home and away ) they haven't won one. and haven't even scored in any of them. 3 away defeats to the top 3, a home defeat to Derby 3-0.
prediction : i'm tempted to go 2-0, but we haven't kept an away clean sheet in 2024, so it's either 2-1 or 2-0 for us. i'll go with the stats and expect them to continue to fail to score against the top 3, and say 2-0 to us.

Wish I could take confidence in the comeback but it seems like we're always playing the "local derby" adage where form goes out of the window. I don't think anyone would be overly surprised if we lost 1-0 controlling most of the match.
They'll want some revenge from the 7 up obviously. I think if we get 2 goals it will make it difficult for Exeter to get anything from so that's my take. Onus get a goal, grab another. Should be OK.
I really hope we go Collins and Vic. Yeah could argue with JDB but why don't we just stick with the two. The Barnsley goal was well worked. Keep at it. Vic needs to know if he gets in the box he will get that quality ball in.
Think Jones for JDC is a happy accident because the best we've done recently from open play was the 2nd half at Northampton with 10. Jones was much better getting up and getting decent deliveries in.

Let’s just hope we don’t replicate the Northampton first half eh OoooooM I could see that happening When we all expect a walkover and we end up going behind before 10 minutes

bit of a reminisce about one of our best ever signings, who came from our opponents tomorrow ... Exeter City. sensational finisher and very unheralded. shout his name & his record from the rooftops !!!! my original post (below) from this thread : more stuff on that thread about him. hit 37 in a season. 2nd only to Joe Smiths 38 for highest total scored in a season. better than Lofty. also one of the best scoring ratios at the club ever. also scored in every round of the cup... obviously including 1 in the final in 1929. trottersforever.freeforums.net/thread/3208/bwfcs-5-top-tier-topscorersone player i've thought about doing a feature on for a while is the brilliant Harold Blackmore. 5th in our all time highest scorers in the top flight with 111 goals in a 5 yr spell from 1926 to 1931. read up about him here : spartacus-educational.com/BOLTONblackmore.htm or here : grecianarchive.exeter.ac.uk/items/show/857 another sensational signing by Charlie Foweraker. bought to replace Joe Smith. born in Devon, and signed from Exeter ( hence the 2nd link above to the Grecians ) . During 1923/24 Exeter City had managed to score only four goals on their away travels including a spell that saw them score in only one of eleven consecutive games home and away. The arrival of Silverton born forward Harold Blackmore was to help change the fortunes of the Third Division South club the following season. His first League goal came in November 1924 when he found the net in a 3-1 away defeat at Aberdare Athletic. During 1925/26 he helped himself to three League hat tricks in 6-1 home successes against Watford and Brentford and a 5-3 defeat of Charlton Athletic. These feats had attracted many top clubs and during 1926/27 he had scored 25 League goals when the Wanderers visited Exeter in March 1927 for a benefit game on behalf of City's, Robert Pollard. Exeter won that game 3-2 with Blackmore scoring two of the goals and immediately afterwards the Wanderers secured his signature for a fee of £2,250. instantly scores on his BWFC lge debut. signed in April 1927, so only 3 lge goals in what remained of that season. following season . great stats but limited appearances. 8 in 12. then when he did get a regular place....WOW !!! www.free-elements.com/England/Players/Blackmore.html1928/29 - 30 lge goals 1929/30 30 lge goals 1930/31 27 lge goals. 3 seasons of 25+ . ridiculous record !! i've had a good look through many great strikers and very few have managed that feat. Lofty and Joe Smith despite scoring 255 & 243 in total didn't put 3 seasons together like that !! www.free-elements.com/England/Players/Lofthouse.htmlwww.free-elements.com/England/Players/SmithJoe.htmlShearer did manage it, and I would guess Greavsie did too. here's a brief list of ones who didn't. Dixie Dean 300 + goals. but not 3 seasons of that consistency 25+. Rooney - no. Aguero- no. Steve Bloomer legendary player (300+ goals) from early 1900's- no ! . Ian rush- no. Denis Law- no. Bobby Charlton- no. Lineker- no. Thierry Henry does manage it with 3 at 25+ but of course Blackmore were 3 at 27+, and HB edges him out on that one ! Kane is another with 3 that are 25+, but not 3 of 27+ Mo Salah - no Van Nistelrooy- no. Fowler- no. Owen- no. Van Persie- no. you get the idea. whether it's Steve Bloomer 1900's to 1910, 1920's of Joe Smith or 50's or 60's or modern day, very few are putting together 3 consecutive seasons like that !! In 1929 Blackmore was a member of the Bolton Wanderers team that beat Portsmouth 2-0 in the FA Cup Final. The goals were scored by Blackmore and Billy Butler. Blackmore was Bolton Wanderers top goalscorer in the 1929-30 season with 30 goals. He repeated the feat the following season. This included scoring in seven consecutive games. Blackmore had scored 111 goals in 153 games for Bolton by the time he left the club in 1932. /photo/1

interesting story on another legend to play for both clubs here in this link : www.exetercityfc.co.uk/news/2021/april/played-for-both-bolton/born: February 2, 1893 Position: Goalkeeper The most standout player for both clubs has to be Richard Pym, known as Dick to his friends. Pym joined the Grecians in December 1911 and made his first team debut against Stoke City three months later. This began a remarkable 186 consecutive appearances between the sticksIn 1914, Pym was part of the tour of South America which eventually established the Brazilian National Team. It was later recalled he brought a parrot back from Brazil and when it died it was buried under the goal at SJP, only to be swiftly dug back up after the team began a losing streak.
In the summer of 1920, Pym moved to Bolton for a then record fee for a goalkeeper of £5,000. Three years later, Pym was instrumental in the ‘White Horse Final’ in front of an estimated 300,000 spectators at Wembley Stadium- keeping a clean sheet in a 2-0 win over West Ham.
Pym won two more FA Cups in his time at Burnden Park, including being in the sticks for the same final Harold Blackmore netted for his side.
Pym made over 300 appearances for Bolton and 203 outings for Exeter City too, making him very much a club legend for both.just looking into that record fee which i didn't know about. looking at his wiki entry... en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dick_Pym it looks like it was a WORLD RECORD TRANSFER FEE. DONE IN 1921. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most_expensive_association_football_transfers#Historical_progressionwe'd already set a world record fee in 1920 with the purchase of David Jack from Plymouth for £3500. it edges up a few times, but you can see how it'd slot in at that time.... at the top or very near to it. not actually listed on there.

We now are effectively into 10 cup finals.
Not quite everyone being a “must win” but we need 20+ points from these 10 games.
In my mind though, today is a must win. Looking at some of the difficult away games coming up, 3 points is essential today.
Exeter is one of the few grounds I have never been to. Don’t think I’ll manage it now so it will stay on the “To be visited” list. Didn't Andy Walker make his debut there - with a goal of course.
There could be a few interesting questions with the team today.
Is Dacres-Cogley fit? Even if fit, does he need a rest? Iredale certainly warrants a start. Williams could quite easily start also. Who plays in midfield?
I see a team like this:-
Coleman
Toal, Santos, Iredale
Jones, Williams
Sheehan, Thomason, Maghoma
Collins, Adeboyejo
Looking at the opposition, their home record is poor.
P18 W5 D6 L7 F11 A17 Pts 21.
Just 11 goals in 18 home games.
But only 17 conceded. Only Stevenage and Lincoln have conceded fewer at home.
Almost points towards a 0-0 doesn’t it?
We are better than that though and, as long as we have taken on board how good we are when we attack with pace, we should win comfortably.
I am not 100% convinced by our defending at the moment so expect to concede but we will score – Collins look excellent to me – so I go for a 3-1 win.

That’s actually the team I was hoping for and even allowing for Dion I think that’s our strongest so let’s hope they show that today and put on a good show. Exeter don’t score many so hopefully defensively we shouldn’t be too threatened but we really do need to stop missing gilt edged chances because goal difference really could be worth an extra point come the final table. I expect a comfortable win today so I’ll go super optimistic 0-3 to the Wanderers. The other challengers also have some tough games today, including Barnsley at home to a very stubborn Lincoln so let’s hope they do us a favour?
