I didn't see the point of Isgrove today, nor, as usual Delfouneso. Equally, when he signed I looked for Sarcevic to be a kind of controlling midfield influence linking defence and attack, but he was once again lost in the general scramble, very bad for a player of his ability. The uncertainty of our central defence is a come-on to the opposition . They are always in two minds whether to hold the ball or clear it, to tackle or to hold off. Brockbank was also into that frame of mind today. Also think Thomason should keep to the left until he develops a right foot. What does all this tell me. Mostly that we were outplayed, and that was mostly because Evatt has filled his players with ambiguity. They don't know whether to stick or twist. Once Crawley got into the game I felt the result was never in doubt. As usual he didn't call on Darcy, who I feel must be on his way out. On the whole I tend to agree with RFTR. Good post Ken. I highlighted the best points imo. perhaps we should try 442, which most on here agree with and also try a more direct approach.

When we signed Delfouenso i thought there was a chance we signed a player far too good for L2 and him and Doyle would be Blake and McGinlay of our time....i also thought there was a chance he would be this years Clayton Donaldson, Chris O'Grady to Doyles Madine/Daryl Murphy.
In truth hes worse than that. Hes O'Grady or Donaldson without the effort. And whats worse is hes guaranteed 90mins every match.
We have the leading scorer and are giving him nothing. We've had countless lessons from opponents that we just dont learn from. To take 0 points from Port Vale, Tranmere and Crawley is unthinkable.
Again my biggest issue with Evatt is his lack of self awareness. Not willing to begin to learn from mistakes.
What Ian Evatt has achieved in football management could fit on a stamp. Ok we went for potential so thats not a bad thing but dont assume you've nothing to learn - you clearly have.
Not using a sub, not using Darcy (he specifically said he was saving Darcy for this game) smacks of Dougie Freeman. I know best. F'the fans.
Well 8000 bought tickets for games they will never see. Deserve much better than this.
Sorry Sharon but keeping Evatt and you will probably lose our best asset on Ronan Darcy but i'd imagine half your season ticket holder income too. Your choice.

I’ll give it 5 more games........
Not how long Evatt will stay in charge (think FV are too scared to sack)
No No No
I think 5 more games before complete lockdown and the football season ending early
Would predicted points per game save us or could it be a reverse of Evatt’s ‘Barrow’ fortunes that promoted them with a few games to go? Could it come back to bite him on the arse and see us drop down due to our indifferent points scoring tally which is probably only slightly marginally better than the points we went down on last year 🤔🤔🤔
Wish I knew the future!!!

I’m not going to rub salt into the wounds but just to say that again Yems surprised us with our line up - thought we would go with the same team as at Forest Green - we took our chance and then with the changes do what we normally do and sit back allowing you back in the game - our keeper Morris was his usual self and pulled off a couple of great saves - our sub Dannie Bulman is 42 next month and is still quality except maybe his legs are starting to go. Great result for us - l have to also say that we have the record of manager’s being sacked after they have played us ............... - good luck for the rest of the season hopefully we’ll see you for the last game at our place in May

not too many easy looking fixtures looking into the rest of Jan.
away to Exeter 12/1 home to Cheltenham 16/1 away to Tranmere 23/1 away to Mansfield 26/1 doing better now under Nigel Clough home to Orient 30/1. 2 good goal scoring threats in Johnson & our old friend Conor Wilkinson
Feb looking much easier. tough start Salford away.. then those 3 "easier wins" we had in November to the 3 S's.... stevenage, southend, scunny.
followed by Barrow.

can he not stop lying ?
Crawley only had 3 shots he says... wrong..they had 12. they'd even had 3 on target at HT.
" WE should have scored 6 or 7 in the last 25 mins and that isn't exaggerating" .... well yes it is seeing as we only had 7 shots on target. not every shot on target becomes a goal just like not every shot becomes a shot on target..... ( a typical ratio for a top striker is 50% shot to s.o.t and 50% again s.o.t to goal )
oh & by the way..we've scored 11 goals in 11 home matches ( in lge) so 6 or 7 in 1 game is exaggerating a lot .

I thought when this 5 subs rule came in , it would really benefit us. bigger squad than many in this Div. even if you still want to gripe about this player and that. they might not be 90 min players but for gods sake, they can offer a quick 20 mins here and there. it's obscene the way Evatt is doing this with no subs. Hickman could have been an option today. not even on the bench ? what's that old saying..a poor workman always blames his tools. a good manager manages . you get the absolute max from what you have. you turn water into wine. get the 2nd 11 motivated to pressure the first team for their places. healthy competition. i'm not sure if I've ever seen a manager this bad at phasing players in and out of the team based on merit. it's so binary... you're either in for 90 or you're not worthy. even young Thomason. as good as he's been. i'm not sure if even he should be playing the full 90 week after week. he's not the most physical. I could understand protecting him a touch more. not burning him out. Crawford has gone from undroppable to unuseable ? bizarre. just no mid-ground. we had youngsters early season getting real game time...Amoateng and Hurford-lockett actually came on..now none of them get a chance on the bench. even then he showed his weirdness. you're fit for real game time..... give them a taste on the bench for 3 or 4 games. oh no.. 10 mins+ for 1 of them 1 week, same again to the other..then never to be seen again. i'm not saying they were definitely up to the job..but what did he expect in those 10 mins ?? it's one aspect Parkinson did very well I thought. phasing in and out FAIRLY. Vela I remember had scored goals in lge 1 but never really made the step up to Championship. Vela had been phased in..sub appearances..impressed and gained a 1st team start. Vela was grafting hard..running...but contributing very little. www.theboltonnews.co.uk/sport/18448582.josh-vela-explains-left-bolton-wanderers-last-summer/lot of good comments under this piece..... discipline incident at Retreat. also leading the drinking standing on tables at Fanny's in lge 1 celebrations. some of the excesses were showing with his lack of fitness. suddenly he wasn't running as much... and any running was headless chicken stuff. Parky rightly phased him back out. start with subbed/ less minutes. then bench. then probably not even that. based on merit. not based on training ground stuff. all clear and obvious to the fans. Vela had a decent spell under Lennon at right back. I think Freedman had under-used him.

Another disappointing result, where the focus shifted away from our defence to the quality of the midfield and attack. On another day at least one of those chances would have gone in but a combination of bad luck, inspired keeping and rank poor shooting let us down. I won't echo many of the other posts but will suggest that the composition of the bench speaks loud and clear to the lack of any real options in an offensive sense. A useless keeper, 3 central defenders and a wholly negative defensive midfielder left little room for manoeuvre. Crawford has been poor all season and D'Arcy was the only real option available. I can only think that Evatt still feels that he's a little light weight. A mistake, undoubtedly, but then we were creating many good chances in the last 20 minutes. Evatt now faces his acid test. Can he use the next ten days to reinforce (not simple given the embargo and our league position) and can he reboot the team tactics as he has hinted, at least in order to provide rather more tactical variation. These next days could well define his future at the club.

Usually Sunday morning im more level headed and do some U turns. Not today. I cannot for the life of me get over Delfouenso allowed to put his umpteenth 4 or 5 out of 10 90 mins in without looking at the bench in worry.
The easy excuse is to say well theres no striker. Theres no alternative for Isgrove and Delf. Fair enough but change the whole thing. Push Sarvevic up there. Pack a midfield to set up deeper in thier half and thats if you assume that Darcy and Crawford cant do better like for like.
I would have given Ian Evatt a pass if he even threw Delaney and Taft on and shoved Santos and Greenidge up and go direct for 10 or 15 mins. It doesnt make you a hoofball merchant to try a new way for 10mins.
Again for me, we proved that witb urgency we can create and attack and put teams under pressure. We've proved we can defend resolutely. Its all down to attitude and wanting it. Release the handbrake and lets go already.

Agree with all that Alp and if IE can recruit well in the next month, we can still challenge but it has to change immediately as we’re now 8 points away from even the play offs. This may well put good players off if they feel we’re not going to make it after all. I don’t think there’s any doubt IE has to change his set up, losing the 3 at the back and switching to a back four and having the extra man in midfield. We have several players who can play the wide roles without risking full backs rushing out of position. Kieran Lea would be a standout signing at this level

www.theboltonnews.co.uk/sport/18983152.bolton-wanderers-0-crawley-town-1---marc-iless-big-match-sunday-verdict/"Evatt’s policy has long been to move opposition around the big pitch and exploit gaps later in the game, it is fair to ask if that target is being accomplished often enough to persist? " good point in this article. reminded me of this point i've meant to bring up for a while, as Evatt has stated it before. no wonder his football seems so dull . for me, Football at it's best is about deceit..like that Maradona quote i posted last week. tricks, skill, beating people 1 on 1. not for Evatt..it's grinding them down slowly...wearily from side to side...waiting for errors. remember Spain at world cup 2010. we're hardly doing tiki taka...but they had a similar style... for all the hype from the pundits, it was dull to watch. the clueless hipster pundits tried to make out if you didn't like this style you were some Neanderthal Sam Allardyce uneducated long ball merchant. no i'll quite happily take Brazil 1970 or 1982 (even 2002 with the 3 R's) thank you very much. that's tricks, skills, pace and goals. taking risks, running in behind etc etc and they were the lowest scoring world cup winners EVER. www.outlookindia.com/website/story/sports-news-5966-touches-and-eight-goals-the-numbers-beneath-spains-polarising-2010-world-cup/356781#:~:text=La%20Roja%20scored%20eight%20in,To%20others%2C%20simply%20frustrating. " La Roja scored eight in South Africa, the fewest by a World Cup winner, from 5,966 touches, the most by any team in the World Cup dating to 1966, when advanced data records began. To some, they were untouchable, dominant and – time for a new word – undispossessable. To others, simply frustrating." we're like a 3rd rate version of them. aiming to slowly grind down teams..but without the players to even do pass this accurately and be this "undispossessable" which at least is very good for the defence.

nobody seemed to notice this, but it's certainly looks better on paper. you're soooo quick to catch on Ian, i've only been saying it since about wk 2 or 3. go and look back at the threads and posts..they're all there for you.
now he's got to figure out who plays in that back 4. lots of options. if Santos remains a cert no matter how bad he plays, then we'll always keep walking into problems.
suspect Delaney will do well in a 4. maybe Taft too. where does Kioso fit in ? Jones may be better as a raiding right back. like AndyL has suggested doesn't matter if left back just sits a bit more , as long as the left sided attacker is more suited/competent.

a couple of points of interests in this pre-match Crawley preview : Marc Iles joins them at 24.55. & goes to about 34.15. Crawley presenter chap makes an honest neutral assessment at 29.00 expressing his surprise about Evatt's appointment. Bolton could have gone for a bigger name. never worked at this level etc. bit of a risk . spot on !! us Bolton fans were lacking knowledge about this level. their fans know more about this level . 30.15- Iles asked to provide some info on players for them to watch out for. comes out with an odd answer. won't spoil it. have a look. think i'd be saying GT or AS. ALSO at 32.30. asked if we would be fresher. Iles explains due to snow & 3g pitch in the Dome that can cause injuries, they'd barely trained this week. I know Evatt did make some references to this in his pre-match, but i'm not sure about this. are we buying this ? what's the point of this Dome if you can barely use it ? and while you're in the Dome, others can be clearing the pitches. in the old days, they'd be roped into clearing snow in the stadium !! www.shutterstock.com/editorial/image-editorial/bolton-wanderers-players-eddie-hopkinson-jimmy-armfield-and-jim-conway-clear-the-snow-from-the-pitch-in-a-bid-to-save-tonights-rearranged-league-clash-with-blackburn-from-being-postponed-1323639a

Alas, as I keep remarking Delfouneso and Doyle is a poor pairing. Yes they have a few goals but we are playing with ten and have no aerial presence. If Delfouneso oppositions will keep freely advancing from deep and pushing us back
If Kioso stays and goes up front at least we can kick straight and win some aerial headers. If he doesn't we need someone else.
Referring to rtfs earlier posts yes to pass it around and wear teams out is a strategy for the very best. Yes also BSA's Bolton had a good balance of strength, directness and skill embodied in Okocha's long throws and his skilful ball retention and passing.
But these last three- five years we have constantly been passed around in midfield and worn down by teams whose possession rates have been good and most of the time we've been loing and penned back late in games.
And it's happening this year too.
A problem with Evatt is that he tries to sell a master blueprint and it's as if its innovative and ' world- beating. But in practice few players are good enough and we get no respite. So we'll do it my way approach is bonkers and bogus. It disguises inexperience and on Sat with no use of subs almost a blind dereliction of duty- they used subs and held us off- we were knackered and despite a valiant effort fizzled out when it came down to it and Greenidge paid the price.
Centre halves on the bench- well stick Delaney on- twice he's scored late goals- our best defender in their box. Use Darcy, Use Comley use anyone 16- 17 players will beat 11 over 95 mins much of the time.
And yes we had a handful of chances but Doyle's header apart did anyone think we were going to score. I didn't. Use the subs and we just might as at Barrow.
I fear we have an inexperienced and arrogant manager. Can he change? I hope so but am seriously sceptical
In my opinion
