Always interesting to see how the bookies weight things up. Start of the season they quite right pipped us for relegation. Thought they we completely wrong on that one. Think they obviously saw the £180M debt playing a factor and knew we would lose more players and replace them with cheap alternatives.
Bit off that Brown is now joint favourite with Chris Wilder(Northampton Town) at 6/4 and Peter Reid is a pretty generous 4/1 to be the next permanent manager. If we can't afford compensation, and doesn't sound like we can, that rules out most and must leave PR with a great chance.
Interestingly and I think the best with most value is still Phillips. He's 20/1 at the moment. Can't believe he was that big a price before the Bristol debacle. I think if Jimmy can restore some pride, and he doesn't have to keep us up-just show some improvement then it may tempt Dean&co to give him an extended period.
The other names I'd pick out would be:
Steve Cotterill 12/1, Malkay Mackay, Holdsworth himself and Ian Holloway all 40/1
Whilst the bet to avoid must be John Carver 9/1
Don't know why I can't find a price on Steve Clarke or Paul Clement as i've tipped both them in the past. Also I presume David Moyes they won't entertain me.

I would have no problem continuing with JP and Reidy. Their combined knowledge and history with the club must be a huge benefit. Let's see what happens up to the season end and take things from there. Frankly, most of those names touted give me shivers so let's stick with what we know.

Don't know about Peter Reid, I do not believe he has much feeling for our football club, on TV etc., he rarely, if ever, talks about his time with us, its all Everton.
Also, when he wanted away, Arsenal were offering £1m for him, but he could not agree terms, he got injured on New Years Day when we played Everton at a snowy Burnden Park, and for nearly twelve months receiving his wages, he went on strike in a dispute with the club at one time, and when he did move to Everton, it was for a fraction of what we could have received from Arsenal....£60k. He wasn't called greedy Reidy for nothing.

Agree with Phil from smithills at the time Reidy stated he would not play for us again and left under a cloud, I have not much time for him really.

Said it before but each of those managers will point to the man before him and say "wish I had what he had! It's his fault"
Which makes the job for the new man almost impossible. But it's time for an ambitious manager to step up and say I'm going to stop this rot. How? Only one way you get the kids through and you make the training count.
I'd like to see Phillips remain for now but I think if Brown does come he will have that vision and the ambition and the hunger.

Quite agree OM and I think Brownie might also be able to keep JP at the club which would be difficult after his managerial stint. Shame about some views on Reidy though, I accept criticism in some areas but he didn't mean to get injured and was still a star player for us. If I remember rightly wasn't it Wolves not Arsenal who offered us £1M and it dragged on and on up to him being injured. I think Terry Wharton was also coming as part of a cash plus player deal then after Reidy's injury we sold him for £60k to Everton then paid £100k for Wharton? We weren't any better on deals then than we are now!! ??

It was definitely Arsenal who where interested in signing Peter Reid for £1m, but he could not agree terms, Terry Wharton joined us from Wolves the same week Gareth Williams joined us from Cardiff.
I think you will that the Terry Wharton era was a different era to Peter Reid, so the player plus cash could not be an issue.

I think it was Everton and the fee was £600,000 which was club record then peter was injured ,the club sent him to spain for a month with his then girl friend who's mum was a friend of my wife peter eventualy went to everton for £60,000 a tenth of what he was worth, your right about terry Wharton Phil and Williams ,Gordon Taylor was another who went for 10% of the initial offer as well went to Brum I think ?that was the start of the downward slope .

Southend on Sky tonight. Might be interesting. Watched the match, that Jack Payne looked a decent player similar height and build to Zach Clough and similar playing skills and a scorer.

Anyone who thinks we will find it easy in League 1, think again. They were 12th and 13th in the table before last night's game and both would have thrashed our current League 2 donkeys. Browny did a real manager's job and outthought Adkins to win 3.1. I have never seen our last 5 delusional Managers ever outthink an opposing Manager.

Hands up, be honest, who thought that Wigan had signed thier own death certificate when they appointed Caldwell as the gaffer. Inexperienced, very inconsistent player, and not even much of a connection.
Well they're 18 unbeaten and looking good to replace us. They have out training ground and Jussi has penned another deal. Is that 4 years after we deemed him too old? (Truth be told after the Stoke semi I thought he'd lost it. Probably shows like we've all known how tough it is being a Bolton keeper. Confidence shot, no man management to pick you up)
And how many would have had Gary Rowett and Alex Neill as success stories based on nothing! Lee Carsley brought a Brentford team to us and played some excellent football and they've struggled since they brought in the other guy(Dean Smith?)
My argument is slightly flawed because being a novice doesn't equate to success and these are just some examples of ones that have succeeded, more will have failed. But I just think Jimmy has shown some heart, tactical awareness and hunger than I don't see any other candidates have got. Browny maybe but he just signed a new deal so that's curtains. Looks like another who used our name as leverage for a better deal. How many have done that?
For me I'd give JP the backing and the contract so the players know this guy is here to stay. Otherwise they'll know that they don't need to perform for him because the next guy will be in shortly. Already down, agents got a club lined up, wheres nice this time of year?

www.theboltonnews.co.uk/sport/wanderers/14423117.Bolton_Wanderers__manager_search_down_to_the_final_three__says_co_owner/some fairly serious developments in the manager saga. www.skybet.com/football/specials/manager-specialsChris Wilder new fave at 5/4..although Brownie still short at 6/4. some surprisingly honest and odd quotes in the BN piece from Chairman Ken about "old managers don't want to work with Directors". seems like former agent ,Ken might have an eye on sourcing the players himself, and not want an experienced manager to answer back. Wilder is hardly "young" at 48...closer to Phil Brown 56, than Eddie Howes 38. and he's older than NL & older than BSA when he first joined us as Mgr. not that that itself is a bad thing..just stop telling us he's young when he's more inexperienced at certain levels (like league 1...er no experience in that) than he is young. but he seems preferable to the likes of Cotteril, Carver and Nolan . I initially thought all this shortlist talk was a load of rubbish seeing as Brownie seemed such a hot fave. maybe it is all just a ploy to get PB to wangle his way out of his contract so we don't have to pay any compo, or at least minimise it.

Or is it gonna get a bit like Cellino at Leeds whereby KA is picking the players he knows and liked rather than the new manager dividing what's best?? Could get a bit strained of the new manager becomes a puppet on a string!!!
