Well just how bad was that AGAIN. When it comes to it we just don’t have it. No composure no bottle and no quality. That was absolutely putrid tonight and fair play to Salop who played their socks off and no way deserved to lose. Not that it directly affected the outcome but how poor was the refereeing again, so much time wasting and five minutes xtra was a joke. Mind you we could have probably played an hour and still not scored. Seriously worried about the play offs now because we just go missing when have to show up. 🤨

Remember when we all lost our minds when Derby didn't beat Wycombe away. What a result. Back to us. Win 4 games.
Well two home games. Two draws. Well done Evatt. Great possession again though.
Won't ever score from a corner. So we'll never make it easy on ourselves. That's just it. Want to win Evatts way or not at all.
Again I wish we had Dapo to bring on but we don't want anyone that won't play this set in concrete system which for me doesn't work.
Hope for big changes in the summer but another season of this I feel.

Can’t disagree with that OM, much as I like Evatt I feel he has a major weakness in being unable or unwilling to actually consider a different way. Shrews had every player back behind the ball yet we still carried on trying to walk the ball through a sea of red shirts instead of working shooting positions. Only Collins actually attempted a few early on but after they scored we just seemed to panic and go to pieces. I know Evatt doesn’t like high crosses into the box because we don’t have any big men to cross to but sometimes that’s the only way to beat teams like this. Paul Warnes done it despite just as many injuries and loss of strikers as we’ve had and to me that’s the difference, we have one way and only one way. Should we not make it through the play offs it will be interesting to see if FV give him another go or look for something a bit different? I’m in two minds but I think I’d probably give him one more chance and see where we are at Christmas.

Imagine the scenario. We've gone up through the skin of the Play-Offs, we're getting roasted by Burnley, Middlesborough, Luton, Sheff Utd, Blackburn, Southampton, Derby, Portsmouth AND we are down hovering just above the drop zone with 3 games left to save our Championship status Over to you Evatt..... ?? Exactly. We do the 'DARK ARTS' of falling every time a player breathes near us, we drop the ball when the ball boy throws it at us for a throw in, we cover our mouths with our hands and pretend to recite the bible before taking corners and free kicks, we walk off as though we're walking in treacle when it's our turn to be substituted, because you know what Ian, that's what teams do when they're scrapping for their lives and if the ref allows it, then why wouldn't you take it. Message being, stop going on the BN and whinging and whining about only being given 5 extra minutes at the end of the game. You haven't got it in you to win the game in 90 and you are now a spent force at Bolton If Evatt doesn't succeed in getting us promoted, he has to go, that was the brief set out, so Sharon, you have to pull the trigger. Football can be cruel, but I bet Ian's not on £30-£40 grand a year like some hard working souls out there, so with that in mind, give him a pay off and lets move on (Dave Challinor)

Disappointing is an understatement.
This was the perfect example of everything that is wrong with Mr Evatt’s walking football style. There was absolutely no urgency, Maghoma excepted, and the play out form the back was slow and tedious.
Add to that some really poor passing and awful defending and it was a disastrous night.
The defence were dreadful. Slow play, poor passing and non-existent marking.
Midfield was one man - Maghoma. Thomason and Dempsey just did not contribute.
Attacking, we are so casual – 20+ shots and just 2 goals, one given to us by rank bad Shrewsbury defending
We started in our normal slow casual way but managed to get some attacks and Collins in particular looked interested with 4 shots in the first 10 minutes. Two were awful but the other two were decent.
But we were just so slow and when the inevitable mistake came, Ogbeta cannot defend, we were caught out. Their man skinned Ogbeta down the right and centred for the one and only Shrewsbury player in the box to turn and score. Why was Toal not marking him? We had our defence back in the box but they just stood off which occurred again later for the second goal.
We still kept getting shots in but they were either straight at the keeper or weak which is why the match stats are not quite accurate. Collins did force a few decent saves from the keeper.
One problem that Shrewsbury had was dealing with corners. We all know that we are poor at corners but somehow the ball kept landing in the box and causing scrambles and we eventually equalised when Jerome somehow scooped the loose ball into the net.
But after equalising we immediately sat back and let Shrewsbury come at us.
Thomason was really slack in midfield and the defence just stood off and Shrewsbury won a corner. Our usual policy of all 11 men in the box but still leaving 2 men unmarked on the edge of the box came about. The ball was played to the edge of the box to an unmarked man whose rocket shot finished up in the net. I haven’t seen it again but 11 defenders between him and the goal tends to ask questions.
So the end of a poor half and 2-1 down
Second half, we set off on the attack and Ogbeta missed a sitter. 5 yards out and somehow managed to hit the ball against the only man on the line.
And so it continued. We attacked, in reality Maghoma attacked as no one else had any urgency in their play and quite rightly Maghoma got he equaliser with a good shot from the edge of the box. He really was carrying the team as no one else had anything going for them.
So we had 20+ minutes to get the winner but Shrewsbury looked just as capable of scoring as we did and the defence continued to dither.
Iredale almost scored the winner in the last minute but hit the outside of the post when he shot from a loose ball.
There was little urgency/desire in the players. We were in the 5th minute of 5 minutes extra time and Thomason, on the halfway line facing forwards, turned and passed the ball back. It was so slow.
As I said at the start, it was Evatt’s walking football and it failed.
Marks:-
Baxter - 5 Not a great deal to do but involved so much in the slow build up out from the back
Dacres-Cogley - 5 Again, gets loads of possession down the right but his final ball is so iffy
Forrester - 4 Looked way off the pace of the game which together with some dreadful passing led to a bad night
Toal - 4 Seems to have given up marking. He left men unmarked in our penalty area on a few times
Iredale - 4 Sloppy with his passing. Unlucky in the last minute with his shot
Ogbeta - 3 Poor again on the first goal. Missed a glorious chance and failed to make the most of his possession
Dempsey - 3 Very disappointing. I was happy to see him start but he was just nothing. The game passed him by.
Maghoma - 9 The one bright light of the night. He was a one-man midfield.
Thomason - 3 Dreadful. Since he stopped getting booked, he has looked half the player that he was. Played in the Sheehan role and couldn’t do it
Jerome - 5 Credit for getting the goal and looking interested. Offside too often
Collins - 5 Started well – 4 shots in the first 10 minutes - but 2nd half seemed to disappear
Charles - 3 On the pitch for 30 minutes and can anyone remember a touch?

Couldn't have marked them any differently davidm and with marks like that, you'd be an absolute mug to back us in the Play-Offs
As you say, Charles??? Invisible
Pro Evatt backers will be chanting that we are unbeaten since Derby scammed us on the 16th March

Good summary David but I think you’re being too kind to Baxter who last night was as bad as anyone. In fact I believe Coleman would have saved both goals as well as getting us further up the field rather than faff about at the back. Last night was not just bad it was putrid and as you say, other than Paris not one player could hold their heads up and the problem is it keeps happening. I’m afraid after last night it’s hard to believe we’ll get through the play offs because we just know how often this team fails to deliver. From several positions of strength with games in hand since Christmas we’ve completely failed to turn up and it’s no good blaming refs, injuries, or our players for missing sitters, every team has that but when our chances come we just fail to take them. I don’t know what we should do about Evatt, my feeling is that if we don’t make it this year we give him one more chance but then if we do what will change because it certainly seems Evatt won’t. ☹️

Through gritted teeth, we must congratulate Portsmouth (& Derby I guess - you are where you are for a reason)
From the Beeb
Portsmouth - Where did it all go right?
1. The right people in the right structure
2. Improved recruitment
3. Big performances away from home
4. Weaker League One - that's probably the most apt point in my view, because looking at next seasons League One structure, there's a high chance we could have any of the following sides, along with those that are promoted and confirmed relegated
QPR Birmingham City Huddersfield Town Stoke City Sheffield Wednesday Rotherham Stockport County Wrexham
Could even end up with Evatt's old side Barrow

A knee injury has kept me from travelling to the last three home matches. Last night I was willing it not to be fit for Saturday. I tend to be fairly vocal and hypertensive at games at the best of times but I doubt I could have got through last night without having to be removed. It was bad enough shouting at my laptop.
Poor selection, complete inflexibility, dozy walking football, dreadful passing, no tempo, no purpose.
As remarked by all above and privately Maghoma was a complete exception, progressive, intelligent and varying his pace. Alas we will not always have Paris.
I suppose we could yet take Port Vale for 6 and Derby could lose. We could also get through the play offs, though on current form I'm not sure how. We could even as last year take our A game to the wide open spaces of Wembley. Do I want that? We have no-one staying on our books that looks to have championship playing credentials. Without significant investment we'd surely return probably having incurred significant financial damage. I can imagine that when Sharon watched that completely inexplicable Ogbeta miss, she will have felt a smidgeon of relief?
Maghoma 8 -the rest 4-6, take your pick

The problem Evatt failed to solve last night was the replacements for Santos and Sheehan. I couldn't think of better than he achieved for Santos, but feel he should have used Morley for Dempsey and used Dempsey upfront with Collins instead of Jerome. Regarding the second goal, which went straight through Baxter's hands at rocket pace, of late for set pieces we have had all eleven men back, the result being that all clearances go to the opposition midfield or defence, and last night Shipley's strike was the consequence of that silly policy. In full agreement about Maghoma's MOM performance, but felt the referee was very lenient with some abject fouls on him - in the second half particularly.

Afternoon all I've just return from dinner with my not such a mate now Derby fan and he say's he watched the game last night and the first thing he said was cheers Shrewsbury then that was nothing like the team that played them of the Park at there place and still lost. In my honesty I did not watch the game after 16 minutes as I had Barcelona on but was checking the score, for my sins I will watch the game back tonight. Could he not have played Maghoma up front with Collins and Morley in Sheehan's place with Dempsey on the bench that way the mighty Jerome could come on for his 25 minute pay check. As I said last night I have still not seen the goals so I can't really comment. We should rest our walking wounded and save them for the play-offs and give it a bloody good go COYWM

Well I have read all the comments and watched the game back and according to the BEN sight it’s got nothing to do with the players or the manager it’s all down to the fans I never knew we could win or lose a game off the pitch I suppose it’s a first time for anything COYWM

Do believe that as a manager sometimes initial success can be the worst thing for you. Thinking of the likes of Keane, Gerrard, Di Canio but to be honest we can look closer to home Coyle, Freedman, Lennon.
If what you do works first tike you've never any reason to question it and end up repeating all the same mistakes in the search to get back.
What has Evatt actually got on his CV. A non league promotion (*season not completed) and then a L2 promotion with us and a Papa Johns trophy.
Now if think the bookies are correct then L2 promotion was always just a bare minimum requirement. I don't think Evatt can disagree that 3 seasons in L1 has to end in promotion. Remember those Oakwell comments "we will go one better".
I don't like Evatt, but I do want the best man at the realm despite my view. I just don't think it's in him. I can honestly see him being like a Michael Duff in his next role and getting sacked off after 10 games or fewer.
Would love to say he's learning, he's getting better but he isn't. He's no interest in learning. He just doesn't want to accept his limitations.
If we don't get up through the play offs(and we have a bad record playing against teams that want it more than us)
What's he learnt? What will he change? Nothing and nowt.
