Could this game become the precursor for the play offs I wonder??
Barnsley’s top 5 goal scorers = 45 Bolton too 5 goal scorers = 42
Barnsley scored 64 Goals against 39
Bolton scored 62 Goals against 38
Just 3 points behind us with a game in hand, so if ever a game needed to be won, now is that time, for many reasons.
We have to have belief from the off and we have to go at them from minute one
Crikey, even Exeter beatb these at Oakwell so anything’s possible if we believe
Come on you WHITES Let’s show this league who’s boss ⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️

I went into both the Blackpool and Wigan games last week confident of winning and we blew it but strangely I still feel confident we’ll do the Tykes tomorrow. For me this really is a must win game both for the points and to get some confidence back because if we keep failing to beat good teams it must surely affect both the players and management and it certainly affects the fans. Anybody claiming a point would be a good result tomorrow wants shooting. We need to win this to send out a message and rekindle belief amongst our supporters. We won there 3-0 last season so no reason we can’t do it again this time.

This game doesn’t bother me as much as Derby away as if we played the way we know we can and ffs put the ball in the net we should win over to Victor and his teammates 1-3 to us COYWM

This game is definitely in the “do not lose” category.
In fact, we need to win to hold Barnsley back a bit and establish ourselves in the top 2.
For those of you who are fearful for tonight, I have copied and pasted a comment I made in a previous post.
The last 6 league visits to Barnsley:-
2 Jan 2023 Barnsley 0 BWFC 3
14 Apr 2018 Barnsley 2 BWFC 2
26 Dec 2013 Barnsley 0 BWFC 1
2 Mar 2013 Barnsley 2 BWFC 3
28 Apr 2001 Barnsley 0 BWFC 1
26 Feb 2000 Barnsley 1 BWFC 1
In fact, in the last 13 league meetings, we have won 8, drawn 5 and lost 0.
So after our fans saying “we never win at Blackpool” and “we never win at Wigan”, the Barnsley fans will be saying “we never beat Bolton”.
Onto the team.
I expect more or less the same as against Cambridge.
For me, I would consider Iredale instead of Ogbeta purely from a physical point of view.
Likewise, there may be a start for Dempsey.
We know how Barnsley play – pressure and physicality. They will kick Sheehan endlessly from the kick off (and get away with it).
So we need to be strong and also sharp upfront.
This match could (should) define us as automatic promotion candidates maybe even title challengers.
It is up to us.
We have good players, a good style and when we click are probably the best footballing team in the league.
So it has to click tonight.
I will go for a 2-1 win.

According to the bookies, Barnsley are faves for this. 11/8. us 2/1. draw 12/5
best chance of scoring : Devante Cole 7/4. Dion / Collins both 2/1 Max Watters for them 11/5. Vic at same price.
they've not got the best home record against the top 8 sides, this season.
lost to blackpool , oxford, p'boro & pompey. beat both derby and stevenage.
we've only played 3 of the top 8 away. no wins. drew with Oxford. lost at Pompey and Blackpool. only scored 1.
they're not brilliantly defensively at home. just 4 clean sheets from 17 games. in terms of away clean sheets, we are ranked 3rd... with 7 out of 17 games. Pompey top with 11. derby 2nd with 8.
in terms of scoring goals. that's Barnsley strength at home. only failed to score in 1 home game. P'boro best record. scored in all 16 home games. we've failed to score in 4 of our 17 away games. Barnsley have the best record in that ranking. just 1 blank in 17 away games. so they're clearly a side who can get a goal but struggle to keep the back door shut, especially against the top half sides. you have to go down to Wycombe in 14th to find a side they've kept a home clean sheet against.
prediction. i'll go 1-1.

Strange game. A win and we can even think about chasing down Pompey. We have them at home. A loss though mathematically wouldn't do that much damage it would psychologically leave a debt that will be very tough to straighten.
I know Whites isn't have a draw but I can see why it appeals to a lot. Notice David didn't include the play off at Oakwell. The most significant and recent trip where we were really found short. Barnsley I think are mentality a lot stronger than Derby and ourselves. The amount of times I've seen them turn it around from losing positions. Cambridge away was one of the rare times I remember us coming from behind to win.
I know they don't have Duff anymore but I'd be amazed if they didn't have last years play off matches and know a blue print. Block the wing backs. Clumsy fouls, body checks, won't get yellow cards because its so far from goal ref will just blow for a quick free kick. Bradley was targeted and it worked.
And on form we've only beaten really poor teams recently. Cambridge twice and Carlisle.
Only hope is were spurred on by Collins breaking his duck, getting some great crosses in. Have our back 3 back and up to speed(fingers crossed) and possibly Dion on the bench.

another important stat. how many times have we scored 2 (or more) away from home. score 2 and you've got that margin of error to concede one, and still win.
against the top 17 sides away ( and obviously we haven't played them all esp in positions from 2-6 ) we scored 2+ just once. Wycombe away where we actually got 4. different story against the sides from 18 to 24, it's virtually all 2's 3's and 4's. only exception being Port vale (1-0 ) but still a win. won against all that bottom 7 away.
so it'll be interesting to see ..not quite the immoveable object against the unstoppable force, and which will break first. our slightly goal shy away attack against their slightly leaky home defence. or their decent home attack against our decent, but slightly out of form away defence. our last away clean sheet was 29/12 at Fleetwood.

Great stats above davidm I was shit scared of what to expect before we played Cambridge following on from the 2 defeats, but we really coasted that game and I’d take another 2-0 in a heartbeat, I’d even be ecstatic with a boring 98% possession 1-0 bore, so long as we bring home the points We have only beaten the Tykes once at Oakwell under Evatt’s reign haven’t we?? Can we make that 2 please?? Edit: actually, does the play offs not count as league games because we lost there last season didn't we😬 One more edit: When we have to do it and the fans expect…… We generally don’t😬🤔😬🤔

Boo, so negative rioch. 😁
You’re right of course, all our high expectations usually shattered but given that so many don’t have expectations from this one, or against top sides I think we may be in for a surprise. I’ve got to honest, I’m not really into haven’t won or haven’t lost statistics, it’s a new game and it’s on tonight not the past and I just think we can do them. I stick to my view that we have to win for all the reasons we have discussed but Posh also play tonight and they also have a game in hand and I can’t see them losing at home to Northampton so if that happens and we lost it allows them back into the automatic running. We can’t afford slip ups now after last week so whoever starts tonight and I’d stick with Saturdays line up, they need to be at Barnsley right from the start. We’ll get chances but will we for once take them?

" We have only beaten the Tykes once at Oakwell under Evatt’s reign haven’t we??" well one of them was this game Rioch. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/64092558 Barnsley had a defender sent off after just 10 mins, and we scored a pen from it after 12 mins. virtual game over. won comfy 3-0 but as the report says against 10 men for so long we only had 3 shots on target, the same as them. the report also says the 2nd goal was gifted from a loose pass. can't be bothered looking it up. sounds clanger'ish. full record of Evatt v Barnsley here, if the link works www.transfermarkt.co.uk/ian-evatt/leistungsdatenDetail/trainer/60275/gegner_id/349the win i stated above, plus an EFL cup win on pens after home 0-0 draw. Barnsleys 2 wins were an FA cup win at our place Nov'22, and of course the play off 2nd leg. all the rest draws. so apart from the sending off after 10 min above, all extremely tight affairs draws, or 1 goal margin..hence my prediction above.

Would winning be as huge for us as losing be as disastrous? If that makes sense.
No, a win puts us in poll but there's still a long of furlongs to go. A loss doesn't see us out of the chasing pack but it's rare you see a front runner get over taken and come back stronger. Usually they get swallowed up by the pack. Maybe I've got Cheltenham on my mind and have gone overboard with the horse racing analogy. But I think a loss possible ends our real hopes of automatic. It would take something really special for us to turn that momentum back round.
So won't be happy w63 but I'm putting a pound in the "I'll take a point"
Actually think a point here and we target a much more inconsistent Derby for all 3.

I have to say that I believe winning would be huge for us OM not just for the points and getting back above Derby but also from the confidence it would give the whole camp. I accept that losing wouldn’t in itself be terminal but I suspect that as you say once we start moving down, which we will and even the game in hand on Derby gone, I can’t see us recovering an automatic spot. Short of a total collapse I can’t see us falling from the top six but I do believe that tonight’s game could be pivotal for the rest of our season. Yes, a draw might be a decent result but this is an opportunity to pull ahead and whatever it takes we need to do that. I actually don’t particularly rate Barnsley that highly and if both Connell and McAtee are missing as rumoured then they may not look quite the team they could be?

Team news still no Charles Collins starts with Victor and Dempsey comes in instead of Maghoma COYWM Disappointed that Evatt’s taken Maghoma out after Saturday Chip. I can see the logic playing Demps but for me it reduces that little something extra and unpredictability that Paris gives which I think could have been the difference tonight plus what does it say to Paris after probably his best game here yet? I know he can come on later but he never seems to do as well coming on as starting. We have to trust Evatt I suppose but I’d have gone with the same starters as Saturday.
