Andy’s goal 1:01:15
Higgo mentioned the FA Cup 1st round that we’ve never been beaten at that stage and the previous year (90/91) he mentioned that we played Emley
If I’m not mistaken, I went to that game and they played on the old Leeds Road ground, home of Huddersfield Town
Again, if I’m not mistaken, I seem to recall hearing that a player had collapsed and died playing for York or Northampton I think
He also mentioned the Witton Albion game which I also went to Think we won 1-0 maybe 2-0 (memories not the same) Ju Darby “muddiest man on the pitch” remarked Barry Davies on MoTD later that eve

here's that Witton game for you RFTR.
notice both goals AGAIN from crosses and headers. feels like 70%+ of goals on this thread are headers/crosses etc. you knew the pitches weren't up to much. you almost had to do this. annoys me when the Manager is making excuses about pitches but fails to adapt. just 5 goals last season by headers, and 5 again this season. poor at set pieces at both ends, and so many of those early season games last season were soooooo frustrating. painfully slow attacks trying to walk the ball into the net, against massed defences was like banging your head against a brick wall. rather than playing more like Rioch-era football. still good footie but attacking and get those crosses in. this tweet by Ian Lucas I found at the time summed my thoughts up then & now. you've got to TAKE RISKS to win. risk losing the ball. stop playing safe . BSA knew to at least take risks in the final third, whereas we're more inclined now to take silly risks in our own first 3rd arsing around from keeper to defenders ,etc which to me is HIGH RISK and very low reward stuff .

a good Jay Jay vid I found. seen lot of these. always feature the same old clips. a few diff ones in this.
plus not all tricks. does have a section on good assists/passes, and shots on goal...that very often led to rebounds off the keeper being tapped in.
I don't like to accept any criticism of Jay Jay, but many comments saying he missed a lot of easy passes to do self indulgent type tricks. possibly fair. but even greater credit to BSA for not getting side tracked by that aspect...not a team player etc . he could see what he was offering beyond that. good set piece delivery, take a long throw. shots often didn't get many goals directly..but several re-bounds as you can see. crosses, beating people in the final 3rd. penalty taker, makes him captain. etc etc effect on the crowd is massive. some of those early relegation battles didn't seem anywhere near as tense as they could have been. Jay jay gets the crowd all relaxed laughing and smiling...and it transmits to other players too.

full match incl preview, HT punditry, and post match. not a DH, but Alan Brazil quite a character himself on co-comm. back to 98/99 season . Colin Todd as Manager in the 2nd tier. the year we made the play off final but lost to Watford. Gunnlaugsson with a composed finish after just 5 mins. gives us an early lead. good run by Bibi down the left to create it. but we lose 2-1 in the end. classic contrast between this team that failed to go up and that the BSA team that did make it up in 00/01. albeit via play offs too, but unlike this team & the other Todd team with 100 goals too, it stayed up in the PL. 15 clean sheets for Todd. 19 for BSA. for & against in 98/99. for 78. against 59 bsa in 00/01. for 76. against 45. if you're letting in 59 in this Div, how many are you gonna concede in the Prem. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2018%E2%80%9319_Norwich_City_F.C._seasonNorwich gave me the same vibes in 18/19. score 93 to go up but concede 57. not hindsight. I genuinely did fancy Sheff utd to give it a far better go. scored less but conceded just 41. concede 57 against teams who aren't as good as you, seeing as you finish top. how the hell are you going to do against 15 sides in the Prem who are definitely better than you. the Boxing analogy is the best one...you're the big kid in the playground in tier 2, against the little kids..you can go shot for shot with them. go up to the Prem...suddenly you're the little kid. you're gonna have to box clever. you can't go shot for shot . learn to duck & dive ..and dodge !!. exciting start by us to 98/99 goals banged in left right and centre. 2's 3's & 4's. but 2's 3's and 4's conceded too. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1998%E2%80%9399_Bolton_Wanderers_F.C._seasonjust 2 clean sheets to end of Oct. no clean sheet mentality . exciting for many fans. 4 :4 at Crewe sums it up !!. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2000%E2%80%9301_Bolton_Wanderers_F.C._season#First_Division6 clean sheets by end of Oct. not scoring as freely.

Thanks for the Witton vid RTF I thought that was lost in the annul’s of time
As for Jay-Jay Even when he put a foot wrong, it was right What a pleasure it was to see him play on our turf. Cannot believe there were so many empty blue and red seats for our 21,000 crowds in the Reebok Prem years when Jay Jay was on show, he was a ground filler and the folk of Bolton that sat at home when he was playing will never truly get how gifted he was

This was the game when I realised how shit Dean Holdsworth really was. Apart from THAT Villa miss at Wembley and his bent dealings with Anderscum, the ‘header’ if you can even call it that, on 60 minutes, when it was easier to score, is why DH was totally crap and only did well in a team that brutally beat up the opposition into surrender (a.k.a The Original Wombles)

Bolton Wanderers Vs Oldham Athletic. (4-0 to Bolton) Played at Burnden Park, Sat 17th April 1976. Roy Greaves(2), Paul Jones(2 pens)
nice bit of wing play by Peter Thompson for the first. gets the cross in, and header by Roy Greaves ( one of my faves at the time !)

a more modern one this time. 2004 Lge cup final at Cardiff vs Boro.
lost 2-1. goal by SKD. not a natural one to look back one, but big occasion. I was there ! . at least we put up a better fight than the Stoke FA cup semi at Wembley. awful start conceding within 2 mins, but got back level.

a lesser seen Frank Worthy goal. vs Blackburn. whenever they show his goals on TV, we always get the classic one plus maybe 1 or 2 others. don't really recall this one. nicely taken as you might expect, with the little knee touch to get it under control.

Nottingham Forest v Bolton FA Cup 6th round 1958-9
Quarter final tie. 45,000 at the City Ground to see the visit of Cup holders Bolton Wanderers. In the first minute of the game Johnny Quigley hits the post and the ball is scrambled away. "Terrific thrills" says commentator Alan Weeks. Forest on top and Tommy Wilson scores in the third minute with a very good drive into the corner of the net (1-0). The crowd go mad and Bolton look rattled. Stewart Imlach turns and shoots just the over bar for Forest. Half time. Chic Thomson makes a good save from a Ray Parry shot for Bolton. A Roy Dwight shot is then brilliantly saved by Eddie Hopkinson but Wilson puts in the rebound (2-0); Boys run on the pitch celebrating the goal. A good run by Dwight but Hopkinson saves his shot. After 62 minutes Brian Birch scores for Bolton with a well struck drive after a free kick has only been partially cleared (2-1). No further action shown. Final score 2-1 to Forest.

back to Aug 1991. a Higson vid. only a brief one with the goals. Bolton v Huddersfield. Philliskirk with the header, from a corner..by TK...knocked on by Reeves. interesting shot at 0.51 with a fan climbing the floodlights for a unique view. why did no-one else think of that one. . would have been funny to get Dave's view of that one.

1st game of the season from 04/05. Bolton 4. Charlton 1. another good game from the Charlton archive. another one that feels like only yesterday but is knocking on for nearly 20 yrs ago. Jay jay hadn't scored a lge goal for us the previous season. well, he starts this one with on red hot form. 2 top goals and an assist for Pedersen. Pedersen gets 2 goals himself. remember watching these red button Sky matches where you got to see the full match ( i think , or very extended highlights ) in the evening, 10 pm'ish this Charlton archive account on YT then sticks the MOTD highlights on after so you can skip to shorter highlights if you prefer... from 1.38.11 straight after BSA's interview ending the sky coverage. good punditry from Hansen and Lawro in the MOTD bit. Hansen saying BSA had the midas touch. and Lawro saying we were a good/very good Prem side. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2004%E2%80%9305_Bolton_Wanderers_F.C._seasonwe finished 6th in the end. just 3 pt's behind Everton in 4th place. we were level on points with Liverpool. just edged out on goal diff. we had a real rocky spell Nov/dec. failed to win all that period. & lost EVERY lge game in Dec. just imagine if we'd have not had that dip, as otherwise it was virtually top 4 form all the way through. no real high scorers for us. Diouf topscored in lge with 9. Davo, Stelios, Pedersen and Okocha chipping in with 6-8 each. real solid defence and protection from midfield. stars of the central defence were Bruno, Ben Haim (really rated him , and so did BSA ! ) , & Jaidi. in front of the back 4 , it was the season when Hierro and Campo were sharing the "Campo role". and Speedo was giving a good combo of protection and quality use of the ball.

another from early 04/05, Jay jay having another stormer.
the edit focuses on Jay jays touches rather than the match itself, but it's hardly any difference as he's at the heart of everything. tackling, long throws, long passes, defensive clearances, crosses , shots, & tricks. taking on one of the best midfield duo's of recent history Keane and Scholes and giving them a torrid time. sitting them both down, running at them time and time again. both must have been dizzy.
game actually ended 2-2. we nicked a late lead thru Les Ferdinand on 90 mins, then somehow let it slip. Hunt. og 90+. neither of those 2 goals shown, but Nolan's is, created thru'a fierce Jay jay shot which KN re-directs at the 2nd attempt.
best tricks : at 0.55 where he does 2 moves on Keane. lovely dragback, then bamboozles RK by instantly changing direction. 2.03 another little flick that the crowd love ! ; 2.11 a trademark mazy run at Scholes that leaves him on the deck. 3.08 looks like he's getting cornered by 2 or 3 but finds his way out. 3.52 neatly evades Scholes again. 5.14 nolan goal.
