Funny how this league evolves
Gillingham beat Cambridge, who beat us, Shrewsbury beat Gillingham and then beat Wimbledon who we could only manage a draw against, so we have yet another tough fixture which some might think should be a home banker I don’t and we’ll have our work cut out Steve Cotterill is a bit in the style of Nigel Adkins and I’m not sure what to expect from The Shrews
Shrews Played 10 Won 2 Drew 2 Lost 6 For 7 Against 14
Hey had 53% possession 14 shots 7 on target 7 corners And they were as dirty as their victors Wycombe with 15 fouls, but they went 2 goals down before scoring and setting up a frantic finish
We should do this⚽️⚽️⚽️ But I’m taking nowt for granted
COYWM ⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️ Let’s do this

We shouldn’t have any concerns about this one rftr, the Shrews are struggling and I don’t see much reason to worry. We’re really kicking into gear now and should never have lost the games against Rotherham and Sunderland with the chances we had. Obviously you’ve got to take them but surely Doyle must find some form soon, so I’ll take him to get a couple this Saturday. I think we’ll just be too strong for most teams at this level and for once we’re just as good away as at home. As you say, there are some funny results every week but that’s the nature of L1 and to be fair, L2 last year, which worked in our favour as teams won one week and lost the next. Only Sunderland stand out for me as a team who will win consistently. We should but only if we resolve the scoring situation, which I don’t think we’ll do with only Doyle up top. Hopefully Baka will add something when he returns but I think if we seriously want to win promotion, IE has to speculate in January and bring in a quality striker. That isn’t easy in January but I’m sure he has targets in mind. I think we’ll win this comfortably so I’ll go 3-0 for Wanderers. Unfortunately I’ll miss this one as it’s my granddaughters 5th birthday and after having to disappoint her last year due to Covid, I promised to take her to Blackpool for the illuminations. Just a shame it’s a home game but never mind, my little one comes first every time. ;-))

Ouch
Travelling to Blackpool W63, when they’re at home, v Blackburn!! Mind you, The Dingles of Blackburn don’t travel well so there’ll only be 500 on the way to Bloomfield
Just on Blackburn, they’re on the fringes of the play offs and getting a few good results. They hammered Cardiff, at home, in front of a paltry 11,670 fans, no doubt Cardiff took a good 1500. I just know that had that been us, it would have been at least an 18,000 crowd
Hope you’re grand daughter enjoys the illuminations. First time I saw the illuminations was way back in 73 and they seemed to go on for miles and miles and you’re eyes couldn’t take everything in, but today, they’re nowhere near as good but they’ll still be magical for a 5 year old so have a good day W63

Thanks rftr, I’m just hoping the weathers not too bad to go, it’s forecast gales and rainstorms!! Still, if I wasn’t going to Blackpool, I suppose I’d be going to the UniBol so there’s not much difference weather wise. Anyway, things could change by then. I’m not sure when I first went to the lights but I know it was well before 73!! I remember that they used to make it one way at weekends because of the traffic and yes, they did seem to go on for miles. A trip to the lights and 3 points for Wanderers would just make it a perfect day, whatever the weather. ;-))

Playing against lower opposition. At home. Coming off a great result. A game we should win.
No wonder i'm so nervous. Dont like those omens.
It is a long season with plenty of games left but i really feel our season is balancing on this game. Win and its a good start and a decent points per game. Confidence going into the winter games with players coming back.
Dont win and the points per game is par, still struggle to win games at home against teams we should bury and again we lose that momentum.
Lets hope we just dont Bolton it up. 3-0.

I’m not remotely worried about tomorrow OM, I think this team is the real deal now and I expect them to win every game, so I’ll go with your 3-0 but think it could even be more!! As you say, a win will really set us up for a tilt at the top positions and with the likes of Baka and Xav to return, plus the potential of additions in January, I have every confidence we’ll continue to do well.

After some difficult matches, this should be a game that we will win comfortably.
Let’s hope though that there is no complacency.
We played well at Sunderland and unluckily lost. We had a great finish to the match at Charlton after probably 60 minutes of so-so play but home to a struggling side should see a good win.
I expect Shrewsbury to pack the defence a la Burton but we should have the guile to score. It’s strange but we are definitely a better away side than home because teams choose not to come out of defence at home whereas away we just suck them in.
Team wise, it’s a toss up between John and Gordon. John needs to regain full fitness so I expect he will start and then will Isgrove come back in for Kachunga. Bakayoko may be on the bench to give us another option. I expect Lee to keep his place ahead of Sheehan.
Let’s hope it’s a good game with a good win. We are going to get soaked but if we win, it won’t matter.
I am not quite expecting the rout that others expect and please don’t concede the first goal again!
I go for a 2-0 win.

Like you say davidm Let’s not concede the first goal
I don’t want a 0-0 like the Burton game and we should have enough goals from around the park to ensure that doesn’t happen, (as I can’t see a goal from out one man up front) but if it were to be 0-0 at least we’ve got past 20 mins without conceding

Great to score first after going behind so many times this season and now another great goal from Dapo and some fabulous defending by Santos. What a first half.

A win is a win whether it’s 5-2 3-2 or 2-1 like today but when at 2-0 up and coasting, we let them come back and it could have ended 2-2 but we’ll done Trotters
Never a free kick
So proud of you

Leaving two minutes before the expiry of the extra five, it was with some relief that I found it was still 2-1 to us at the end when I got home. Despite Shrewsbury's fighting performance our overall effort was hard to believe as we frequently miscontrolled the ball or passed badly and were reduced to few meaningful attacks and wasted possession . I felt the Tuesday effort at Charlton had to be responsible as we continually overplayed keepball at the back and didn't prpcess attacks. (I didn't see John go forward more than a couple of times, and wonder if he is yet fully recovered from his erstwhile illness). Thank heavens for Santos. He pulled off so many late rescues. All very disappointing after two of the best goalscoring shots by Sarcevic and Afalayon you'll ever see.

What a strange game.
Some lovely possession passing, 2 superb goals but some terribly sloppy play throughout the team which allowed Shrewsbury a significant amount of possession and pressure.
Most of our possession came at the back and most of our attacks stopped at the edge of the box. Zero corners is strange for a home team.
As I said, most of the attacks stopped at the edge of the box including both goals. A screamer from Sarcevic and what is becoming Afolayan’s trademark cut in from the left and a shot into the far corner.
At 2-0 with less than 30 minutes gone, Shrewsbury were there for the taking but despite loads of neat passing we never really threatened in the rest of the first half except for a Jones effort which went straight at the keeper. Santos also made a couple of staggering good recoveries.
Second half, we were dreadfully sloppy, endlessly giving the ball away. Santos was again a rock and rescued situations endlessly.
Shrewsbury had a penalty when a slip by Williams, I think, led to their man running along the edge of the box and Sarcevic obligedly sticking out a leg and tripping him.
The penalty was dreadful. A chip into the centre of the goal which Dixon stuck a hand out to and pushed away.
If that had gone in, we might have had a good few minutes of mass panic but we meandered along and then concede a comedy capers goal.
I have to say I think the ref was correct.
Shrewsbury had the ball just inside their half. Their man was tackled and the ball shot away upfield to their striker who was flagged offside. What the linesman hadn’t seen was that it was our player, Isgrove I think, who played the ball from the tackle. The ref played on but Santos picked the ball up expecting a free kick for offside. The ref gave them a free kick for hands and harshly booked Santos for hands. The Shrewsbury full back then obliged and scored.
So we had 5 minutes of injury time panic but got through to the end.
A strange performance – some great passing, some awful passing, some sleeping but 3 great points.
I think we need to rest as many of the team that the rules allow for Tuesday’s match and get them rested and prepared for Sheff Wed.
Marks:-
Dixon - 7 Yet again, not a lot to do except save an awful penalty. I need to look at the free kick in more detail as I thought maybe he could have got it
Jones - 7 Good until he was crocked. Subbed at half time
John - 6 Much better than at Charlton. Looked fitter.
Johnston - 6 A couple of mistakes which could have been disastrous but for Santos
Santos - 9 Excellent. A couple of incredible recoveries after slips by others. He needs to play to the whistle though – that free kick should just be hoofed the ball away
Williams - 6 Not quite as dominant as normal
Sarcevic - 7 Great goal and some good positive forward runs
Lee - 6 Steady. Some good passes and some lost tackles
Afolayan - 6 Good goal. I thought he was tired-looking throughout the game but he still got in a magnificent shot
Kachunga - 5 Still struggling to me
Doyle - 5 Just no service to him
Isgrove - 6 Pretty good as right back in the second half
Bakayoko Looked very rusty
Sheehan Some very average passes

Strange. We began passing brightly and struck two fantastic goals, Sarcevic's reminscent of Anelka. Dapo' s was brilliant too. All this after some fantastc blocks by Johnston.
I wonder what the stats will show. I think we only touched the ball in their box once?-, Kachunga second half. We had free kicks. Any corners.?
Shrewsbury after the goals comprehensively outplayed us but we defended superbly and had to. Our tippy tappy stuff is never far away from slf inflicted disaster. Dixon was horribly embarrassed once then luck.
I thought Lee was superb.
Meanwhile we were hopeless at left back- they circumvented us many times but we dealt centrally with the lot. Different story on Jones flank but his injury neutered us attack wise. I thought Isgrove did really well but gave the goal away twice first with a loose pass which launched a counter attack and then in the free kick kerfuddle.
We were lucky with a poor penaly. Shrewsbury lacked goal threat even from the spot
Some serious Evatt delays replacing Jones, leaving Kachnga on and not realising that we needed a left midfield and reinforcements being continually overrun. Just too static and too much reliance on like for like subs. Santos was at times fantastic
Dixon 8 Jones 6 Isgrove 6 Santos 9 Johnston 9 John 5 Williams 8 Lee 9 Dapo 7 ( got lost after goal) Doyle 3 Kachnga 3 Sarcevic 7- brilliant and chaotic in turn Bakayoko provided a much needed focus- all but decapitated a defender with a bizarre overhead
