By way of minor grumps the N upper was filthy with lots of bird droppings and the roof leaks. Also why not run the Wigan bus. It's always been fairly full most of the way. Its absence forced me into a drenching at Parkway. I've relied on it for years after the game

Lucky to come out with a point today but could easily have won comfortably with the chances we missed. Four or five players were way below par namely Gilks, Williams, Jones, Doyle and Dapo was awful, passed when he should have shot and shot when he should have passed. Doyle was nowhere near fit and shouldn’t have started and Gilks was totally responsible for the first two goals. Had that been Dixon bed have got pelters. On the basis of today’s team, I’d also blame IE for picking players who just weren’t ready. Thankfully the players fought until the end and we salvaged a point and given that MK are probably a top half team and we were miles away from our best, I’m even more confident we’ll do well once everyone’s fit.

A few reflections
Were it not for the all too recent memory of Crellin, I'd be arguing that we witnessed the worst keeping performance in years on Saturday. The first Gilks threw out rashly and then was beaten at the nearpost. The second goodness knows- he never moved to a slow free kick that went within a foot of him. The third offered a bit more excuse but he still reacted slowly and ought to have been able to get a foot to it at least. We are simply not going to get away with Gilks for another season unless he was just exceptionally stiff and under-prepared for this game. And if that was the case he should have played on Tuesday and Dixon at the weekend. Dixon has to be a shoe- in at Wimbledon if Evatt has learnt anything at all from last year's horror start and his exteneded vacillation and denial of the obvious.
I agree with IE that Johnston did ok really. I was quite impressed. We were a lot more mobile with him around. Also although he missed some passes he also succeeded with quite a few. He reminded me a bit of Craig Dawson. Whilst not particularly dominant in the air, he did look to head passes to teammates when he could. He also looks like he has a bit of an idea where their goal is on set pieces. His movement is quite good and he has a bit of speed which Baptiste and Santos lack. The goal line clearance kept us in it. I think that before long he will partner Santos as first choice. Again IE has to be prepared to ditch his old pals in the interests of the team.
Babayoko was more effective centrally than out wide. Again the modern fashion for playing wingers or wide men on their wrong feet seems to drive tactics. Dapo on the left offered some threat and hit one nice shot but his wrong foot passing and shooting denied two more good chances.
Jones has got better and better on the overlap. I think he ran and worked his way to five crossing opportunities late on. Unfortunately his passing can be dreadful and is crossing worse. The one that finally got through wasn't exactly a precision pass but fortunately Kachunga did something with it.
Sarcevic looked a bit fitter than last year but he still tries to be a bit too clever at times and his lack of pace both did and will led to lost possession much more at this level than in Div 2 where his strength sometimes compensated. He offers moments.
Doyle looked unready. For all that he could have had a hat trick and should have had two. Will he score goals at this level? Probably. Can he really do one up front as to all intents and purposes he began. I don't think so.
I wonder if Darcy and Politic will get a look in and if so when. On the evidence of two seasons ago both were developing well.

I didn't comment at the time as hoping highlights would clear a few things. But both club site and EFL on Quest missed a lot of talking points.
From my view Williams was lucky to stay on. Of course in 1990 would have been a great tackle but these days you can't go in two footed and perhaps it was the slippy surface but could have gone. I also think that Sarcevic pen was a stone wall and perhaps the ref saw that as evening up on the decisions. Agree with Evatt cross ball to Doyle seemed to be the ball to go play.
Enjoyable game that we never should have lost. Even in injury time we always looked like getting a deserved goal not to lose.
Wonder how it reflects on Evatt when a player like Delf leaves for summer and comes back fitter. Shouldn't he be monitored all season and be in premium shape on the club's watch? Reason I bring that up now is think Sarcevic looks as big as ever, might argue that people built differently but he was also struggling with the pace of the game. Looked like October Sarcevic to me.

I think a few players looked slow and unfit on Saturday OM and there certainly wasn’t the zip about the passing and moving that we saw last year, although that may have been down to the number of changes made by IE. Certainly our right side seemed much weaker without the Jones/Isgrove partnership. Bako looked good but not as a winger please. Doyle shouldn’t have started and certainly should have been off at half time, Williams looked slow, which may have been the reason for that tackle and Dapo was a shadow of last years player. Obviously the players need to get used to each other but apart from Johnson at left CH, I think last years team would actually have fared better. Sheehan looked good going forward but I’m not sure midfield was as solid without Lee in there so it will be interesting to see how IE plays it going forward.

In my view, some level headed posters on the BN are laying the blame fairly and squarely at the hands (or lack of em) at Matt Gilks for the dropped points
I noted a couple of predictors going for 3-1 to us before the game and I was thinking, no, we don’t do 3 goals, but I’ll give this new set up the benefit of the doubt. So, to score 3, at home, in front of a bumper crowd, 16,000 (Blackburn v Swansea = 11000 crowd) and only get a point, I’m then left wondering who was to blame!!
One can blame Matt Gilks all day as I will, his positioning and reflexes/movement were stuck in frozen mode, but the 3 4 or 5 in front of him must shoulder as much of the blame as him. It is time to hand over the gloves to this Dixon kid, but, although there were some decent bits and bats for the debutants, there were many other noticeable mistakes from them too, Johnston, Baptiste, and lack of energy and movement from Sarce and Sheehan at times.
Don’t want to sound too downbeat as I’m more positive than ever, but we’ve got our first 90 minutes out of the way and we’ll face equally as tough an opponent in Wimbledon this Saturday so time on the training ground must be used effectively to iron out the gaping mistakes that allowed 3 for the against column, as we won’t be so fortunate to bag 3 ourselves next time out
