I actually thought we’d played well Andy. I agree about the set pieces and yet again we lack any semblance of composure with the final ball in. These are very dangerous though, especially with corners and crosses, so we need at least one more to make this safe and I actually think we’ll get it.

Morecambe can’t stop scoring and they’re far far better than Carlisle so I expect a very very tough game and as I’ve said earlier, it’s a winner takes all game as the top 2 and Morecambe have a far easier run in than we do If we play like we did tonight, I fear a drop into the play offs and to be fair, who could deny free scoring Morecambe an auto spot whilst we bore the life out of the game

Just awful but at least there will be some changes for Morecambe and Sarcevic will be an asset. I thought we were little short of abysmal with one or two exceptions. The passing and choices of Dapo and Jones were just an embarrassment. The Carlisle commentator thought Dapo a threat- Apart from the one shot I didn't . Thomason perked up but when in attack his choices and deliveries were dire. Lee is wasted where he is Hipefully Sarcevic will come in. Brockbank did well this time apart from a silly central foul.
If we are to beat Morecambe we will need to be a lot better. Maybe Jensen will come in and do a latecseason Al Habsi
Gilks 6 Jones 3 Santos 7 Baptiste 9 John 5 Thomason 6 Lee 5 Williams 5 Dapo 2 Isgrove 6 Doyle 3 Delfouneso 0 Elbouzedi 0 Brockbank 6

First half some of our play was tremendous but the same old failings prevented us being further ahead. We have no composure at all when we get past the last man and cross. Almost every one either goes astray, or blocked by the first man and does anybody actually ever think of just shooting? I can’t believe there’s a worse team in all four leagues at set pieces, every single one wasted. When did we ever put a team under pressure like Carlisle and others, even bottom club Grimsby, from set pieces and crosses. There are so many weaknesses in this team but what you can’t deny is their fighting spirit, how we came out of that with a win I’ll never know but we did, so onward and upward to Morecambe where a win should almost seal our place in the automatics. I think we’ll get one too.

We never had an attack in the second half. Our midfield was awful, got few tackles in, rarely got a second ball, kicked anywhere. I felt sure Carlisle were going to score. Delfouneso a wasted sub, never got a kick. Without some real changes we are not going to survive at Morecambe. After the 13 Carlisle corners with us having 10 men back, there was never anyone available to pick up the out ball. Thought Afalayon should have had a penalty, and Santos was unjustly booked.

I accept Dapo can frustrate but I actually thought he had one of his best games tonight and was unlucky not to get the goal himself and Jones with Isgrove in the first half was superb other than his final ball in but then you could apply that to them all. Second half the 3 changes took all the wind out of us and we just couldn’t get a foot on the ball but credit to Carlisle, they were excellent, much better than us and if they’d got one would probably have gone on to win. Yet again though we should have had it won by half time but fluffed opportunities. Let’s just hope our luck holds out for the remaining 3 games?

How did we win that?
A dreadful second half when we were second best by a country mile.
First half, we created some bits. Doyle scored when Afolayan hit the post, John put in a magnificent centre which Lee ought to have dived at and Jones put a couple of centres across.
But we also made a mess of a lot of promising positions with pretty awful final balls which hit the first man every time. Defensively, we were scary trying to defend corners – mass panic.
Second half, we really never had a kick. Did we make a chance in the second half? Carlisle had most of the possession and threatened mainly from set pieces. It was really panicky watching the ball flying all over our box. 13 corners to our 3!
Injuries may have struck us too. John injured and possibly Gilks.
Not a very good performance but, as we keep saying, it’s the points that matter at this stage of the season.
On to Morecambe – we must not lose!
Marks:-
Gilks - 7 Despite the constant pressure, he did not have to make many saves. Hope his injury doesn’t keep him out of Saturday.
Jones - 6 A few good breaks in the first half. One really good centre plus some average ones.
John - 6 Lovely centre to Lee in the first half but also some raggy ball control.
Santos - 7 Got muscled off the ball a few times but was also strong and won headers in our box
Baptiste - 8 Strong and needed to be!
Williams - 6 Looks a bit lost without Lee next to him
Thomason - 5 Not his best game. Tried hard but the strength of the opposition got to him a few times
Lee - 5 Just not a no 10. He is being wasted at the moment. He needs to be back next to Williams
Afolayan - 7 Some good breaks. Hit the post prior to the winner. Still takes one dribble too many
Isgrove - 6 No really decent balls in from him
Doyle - 6 All you can ask from a goalscorer. One chance - one goal but hardly in the game other than the goal
Delfouneso - 5 Couldn’t contribute
Elbouzedi - 5 He has pace but to what effect? No final pass
Brockbank - 6 OK defensively but not the passing ability of John

Jones hit so many poor passes tonight and how many times did they get balls in from the left?
All I saw was Dapo surging forward into cul de sacs and if threatening always frustrating. He started a fair few Carlisle breaks. Didn't impress me tonight

Respectfully, some of these comments seem a little harsh to me. Yes, it was a tense finish, but we won against a team who were unbeaten in their last six, their last loss being to Cambridge. We were certainly holding on at the end, but I don’t remember Gilks having to make a serious save all match. Some of our play was elegant at times and, once again, we probably should have scored more than we did - Doyle’s header, another cleared off the line by them and what was in my view a stonewall penalty when ‘Dapo was brought down. And, of course, ‘Dapo, despite his evident shortcomings, made Doyle’s goal. We end the day in the same position as we started it, albeit with a couple of clubs, Forest Green Rovers and Exeter falling further behind; actually that was inevitable as they played each other, but a draw was fine for us. Am I at all worried about Morecambe. Well, yes, they’re only a point behind us and scoring for fun, Declan John could be out and we may well need to score more than one, but I see a team that’s working hard for each other with skill beyond this league at times. It’s in our hands.

Great post South, completely agree with that. I really don’t know what IE is seeing playing Lee at No10, it has completely unsettled the team both defensively and attack wise breaking up the partnership with MJ, just it appears to fit George in. I like George but personally I’d rather leave him out and play someone else in the No10 role, even if it has to be Fonz, which I thought I’d never be heard saying. Exactly what Arthur has done to upset Evatt I don’t know but our one time go to sub seems to no longer be in the picture, behind both Zebedee and Fonz, neither of who actually contribute anything when they come on, as was seen again yesterday. I accept Evatt’s got us where we are but I do detect a very stubborn streak which could eventually cost us. Anyway, it’s on to Morecambe and hopefully if Sarcevic is fit to play, it will result in Lee moving back to partner MJ and perhaps we can regain that solidity we had a few weeks back. I just hope John’s fit as well because we would certainly miss his ability and experience down the left side, even if he hasn’t been at his very best recently. Still in our own hands so COYWM.
