Who’s gonna score for us that’s the BIG question? If Doyle doesn’t, who else does??
I can’t remember ever seeing a team get promoted or do so well with such a poor return in front of goal, save for the Boring Boring Arsenal and their many 1-0 wins. Don’t get me wrong, I’ll take any wins including boring 1 nillers so long as we scrape over the line but in all honesty, our current squad would need a major overhaul to even stave off relegation next term and establish ourselves in mid table.
The Cumbrians are quite similar in results to us and if they were to win this and their game in hand they’d be just 4 points away from us so there’s still lots to go at in this run in. If we win, we might go into the Morecambe game with a lot more confidence rather than nerves.
Don’t want to predict this one but I just don’t get where the goals are coming from
Ok then I will 0-0 😞😞😞 And Morecambe to floor Grimsby 3-0

Home to Carlisle.
We should be confident of 3 points but our recent home performances have been a bit iffy, despite 7 wins and 3 draws from our last 10 home games.
For those old codgers like me, I can remember 1977. At the top or near enough all season and comfortably 3rd in the league and an easy home game against Carlisle who were subsequently relegated that season. So an easy home win? No - a disastrous 4-3 defeat which brought on a semi-slump and we finished 4th behind Wolves, Chelsea and Nottm Forest (who won Div 1 the following year and then the European Cup for the following 2 years!).
I met one of the Carlisle scorers, Mick Tait, many years later. He recalled that win and how our confidence just ebbed away on the night.
So we cannot take anything for granted.
Back to current days. We need to keep our nerve and take some of the chances that keep slipping by us.
I am not one for making changes because of the Grimsby result. We have come so far with more or less the same players. They have performed miracles and got us to within striking distance of promotion so I would play the same eleven. This is assuming Sarcevic is still not ready. I would have him in the side if he is fit.
One positional change I would make is to reinstate the Williams/Lee combination. We played so well with those two together and playing Lee as a no 10, for all his undoubted abilities, has not worked out too well. We then would need to somehow shuffle Afolayan, Thomason and Isgrove into some shape to support Doyle.
Opponents have also worked out that pressuring Santos and Baptiste and not allowing them to come out of defence easily is beneficial. Walsall, Harrogate and Grimsby all did this with some success so we need to be prepared and have plans.
No exaggeration to say that a win is vital. I expect another tight affair and a 1-0 win.

Agree with most of that David but although I don’t want major changes, I do agree about the Lee/Williams partnership. Moving Lee has unsettled the defence and as well as exposing Santos and Baps, also prevents them from passing out as they were doing leading to increased pressure and misplaced long passes, which generally come back at us because we don’t have anybody to hold the ball up. I think George should be back on the bench. I don’t mean because he’s played badly, quite the opposite, but I just don’t think he fits into this team and much as I criticise him, Delf would seem to be a better No10 until Santos is fit. Effectively though, if we just took the chances we are now creating, we’d sail through games, so the likes of Doyle, Dapo and Isgrove need to get their shooting boots on. We also desperately need somebody to take set pieces. Isgrove is atrocious, especially on corners, rarely beating the first man. John seems to be the best dead ball taker, so maybe he should do it? I can’t see Sarcevic being fit so it looks like we’ll have to do it without him the hard way but I’m confident that the players will have put the Grimsby result behind them now and come out fighting so I’m going for 2-0 to the Whites.

I see the problem as accommodating Thomason, who, in my view, has often been our best outfield player for the games in which he’s played, while reverting to the back six that had been so effective in our recent unbeaten run prior to Newport.
Clearly, despite his other undeniable talents, Lee is not a natural number 10. Such a player would have been expected to score at least some of the chances he has had. However, at present, there’s no evidence that Thomason is a natural 10 either. In fact, his long cross field balls are more typical of a holding midfielder than a 10.
I would definitely play Sarcevic if he’s available, and maybe give Thomason 30 minutes towards the end when the other side has tired and his long balls to Isgrove or Elbouzedi might be most effective. If Sarcevic isn’t available then Delfouneso in the 10 slot. I know he hasn’t looked great recently, but he’s undoubtedly talented and he can score.
Another issue that has been discussed here and on other fora is the lack of leadership. Maybe if Gilks was a number 10 we might have that, but I don’t really see Doyle as a commanding leader. It’s when things aren’t going well that someone has to step up and take that role. I’m not even sure Sarcevic is that person, but prior to his first injury I did see him lift the team by his actions in a few games, and he can certainly score. Anyway, in Sarcevic’s absence I don’t see anyone who could fill that void.

Good point about the leadership South. Like you, I don’t see Doyle as the type to gee the players up and also like you, I don’t know anyone else in our squad who would, including Sarcevic, although he is probably the most capable. We just don’t have much character in the squad I’m afraid, everybody seems too quiet and reserved. Maybe we should get Phil Morais in to remonstrate because I don’t see any of our head butting him? It’s a tough one for IE, I don’t envy him choosing for tomorrow night but he’s somehow got to find a way to get the players to convert the chances, many chances in fact, that we are now creating. It’s the fact that we are at least creating good chances that keeps my spirits up because surely they must go in sooner or later, as many of them seemed easier to score than miss.

For some reason I can only get Carlisle commentary.
What's to be said. I can only see defeat ahead. We have been abysmal on set pieces at both ends and have hit so many bad passes and crosses. This is quite the worst we've seen.
Thomason is having a terrible game, Williams is nowhere and as for the final balls from Jones, yuk
What on earth has happened?
OK we are in the lead and we have been quite sharp moving from the back but it was a lucky goal after the only shot.
We have had possession enough to have scored three or four. They too are struggling and not pressing . But we are there for the taking just now.
It needs a change or two, Lee should be playing deeper. If he doesn't change things and calm things down we will have a very nervy second half.

Andy i have the carlisle commentary funny how they see it much differant than you drooling over some parts of Boltons play and saying that if Bolton score again the game is over .

Can only get that too Andy and suprised how impressed that Cumbrians are with our play so far. Been very nervy at the back. Thought Santos was destined to get an OG defending a basic ball in the box. We havent managed that basic skill yet.
Thomason looked a bag of nerves for 10mins but think hes settled down. Think youre being harsh on him.
Jones done well but getting nothing from John on the left. What happened to his Feb form? Same goes for Lee. Were those early performances unsustainable.
I dont think we will keep a clean sheet. If we concede 1 heads will drop. So think we need 3 to be in top 3 tonight. Guess thats all we can ask for.
Cambridge pegged back. Who knows what will happen in next 3 weeks.
