Good scoreline.
Lady Luck still with us for the penalty.
Loads of possession BUT we are creating practically nothing.
One good centre from Jones. Couple of dribbles from Afolayan.
Very nervy with the score as it is

I'm reserving judgment. This game will be decided by subs, I think.
At one level we have played very well with a bit more forward drive. John makes a huge difference. Still too passive at times . Certainly won't tire a team out with 5 subs.
Pretty poor referee and S****horpe have been on the wrong end so far. Delfouneso has played a few of his trademark give and stays but two fouls given against him have been his contribution. Had they been against us I wouldn't have liked either. Nor would Evatt.
Doyle is struggling but great penalty. Clumsy miss just after. Dapo is flattering to deceive but might just do something decisive.
I think John and Isgrove have done well and both Thomason and Williams bossed the half.
I could see us fizzling out here but maybe we have the bench to press on and put them away?

dull again. Scunny offering little. agree with Whites, Dapo not doing much. MJ quite good. John lively.
no shots on target apart from the pen. looked fairly tame pen to me. not quite as bad as his previous dive where the 2 comms agreed with me & my OH's view that it was never a free kick.
can you imagine what fans would be doing in the stadium with all the back and square stuff . i know some fans can be too old school get it forward at times, and i'm all for a bit of patience, but this really is taking it to extremes. it's all very well when it works, but all that to 0 shots on target from open play.
2 good crosses. 1 from Isgrove and 1 from jones.

A good time to score a goal. We can impress on the counter attack. They stole a march with the subs but we battled on.
We still struggle with our forward pairing but the midfield and defence did really well. Where did Sarcevic find that turn of pace. Keep him up there.
I thought Isgrove pulled his weight today.
Some worries. The second half played out much as expected. We just have to be stronger when on top. Well done Baptiste for the clearance off the line.
Gilks 6 Jones 7 Baptiste 7 Santos 7 John 7 Williams 8 Thomason 8 Dapo 5 Doyle 4 Delfouneso 2 Isgrove 7 Gnahoua 5 Miller 5 Sarcevic 6

Good all round performance tonight, never in any trouble but we still lack that end product around goal. That said excellent second from Sarcevic who looked sharp and impressive when he came on. Shame Maddison wasn’t on earlier for Isgrove, or better still, Delfouneso, only on a minute and nearly created a goal. Can’t wait for him to settle down and get fully fit, he’s so exciting to watch and so positive in his attitude. So well done Whites, really pushing for the play offs now and watch out 3rd place automatic which is certainly within our reach now. Bring on Barrow and taking nothing for granted, we surely should have another comfortable 3 points there?

A game of 2 halves yet again.
First half, we played really good possession football BUT it was all outside the opponent’s penalty box. We pass and pass and pass and still are 25/30 yards away from the goal.
Our penalty was lucky. One of the few times we had more than one man in the box and 80% of referees would have waved play on for the high boot.
Great penalty from Doyle.
And then half time comes and we fade away badly. Scun.thorpe had more ball than us second half but it was a brilliant break which then led to Sarcevic’s goal. A really good goal.
We deserved to win but, as I said following the last match, we must address this 2nd half fade away as it is becoming a regular event
Marks:-
Gilks - 6 Again, nothing much to do except for one farce moment in 2nd half when he rightly rushed out of his box but did not clear it properly. Baptiste rescued him there.
Jones - 7 Much better getting forward. One great cross in 1st half.
John - 6 The booking he got seemed to subdue him. Missed a decent half chance in second half.
Santos - 8 Excellent again.
Baptiste - 8 Also excellent. Kicked the ball off the line to rescue us.
Williams - 7 Very busy. Played well except for one disastrous moment when he passed straight to an opponent, was too slow trying to pick up the loose ball and was booked. Good though.
Thomason - 8 A couple of right foot mis-kicks but very good. Distribution was really good.
Isgrove - 6 Good assist for the goal.
Afolayan - 5 Sets off all right but faded badly.
Delfouneso - 6 Some decent bits of possession but, apart from the penalty incident, he never gets in the box. With Afolayan also not getting in the box, we are desperately short in the opposition’s box (see Sarcevic).
Doyle - 6 Great penalty. Missed a good chance just after that but struggling because we rarely put the ball into the opposition box.
Sarcevic - 7 That’s how a no 10 should play. Midfield and then get into the box to score when a chance occurs.
Miller - 6 Busy. Held the ball up well twice.
Maddison
Gnahoua

well, up to 9th now. the full hat-trick of doubles against the "S" teams. one more relatively easier game to go against Barrow before the slightly tougher fixture list kicks in.. Oldham away, Bradford away, and Cambridge at home.
not for the first time, it feels like 12/13 season...late run to verge of play-offs under DF. winning. decent run but pretty unconvincing. only 3 shots on target to their 5. ( 2 from open play in 90 mins !) not complaining ..my top 7 bet still alive, and collected on tonight too. you don't expect every game to be flowing attacking football , but you keep thinking if we don't show a bit more than this, it'll come back to bite us one day.
now up to 10 clean sheets. 7 at home. no team has more home clean sheets than us. the shaky home form & results seems to be finally behind us. won 6 of 16 home games..but all of our last 3. ( the previous 3 before that were salford, bradford & southend. ) none in sept, 1 in oct (late oct ..27th of oct for our first home win ! ) , 2 in nov, 0 in dec, 1 late jan & 2 in feb.
Van veen cameo for them was good. nearly scored goal of the season. blocks an MJ clearance, then runs about 10 yards off the field, 2nd fave to loose ball but still nips in front of MJ again, falls to ground, picks himself up then audacious chip that Gilks dealt with well as it looked to be flighted perfectly. like Whites said, pity our own maverick , MM, wasn't on earlier doing something similar for us. get the feeling we might be seeing more rotation ..with MM & Lee getting a start on sat'day...maybe the new keeper in due course too.
we're hitting like i said in a recent post, that point in the table where upward progress is a bit tougher. 5 of the top 7 won today. the only 2 that didn't were facing teams in the top 7 themselves ( i.e salford losing to Morecambe and Cambridge losing to cheltenham ). Carlisle have 4 games in hand on us, just 1 place & 1 pt behind us, but they've really hit the skids ...not won in last 4. & 3 of them are losses.

No need to fixate on the negatives tonight but there were some.
Fair play to Evatt tonight. Thought his first sub was a little slow to react but ultimately the right decision. Really changed/ killed the game off.
The penalty came from John instinctively putting a cross in rather than stopping and turning back.
Strange few games. Yes had the luck in all wins but apart from Mansfield never looked liked losing. On the flipside never look like we create enough for all our possession.

I wondered where our 2nd goal had come from as it seemed to come out of nowhere.
1.24 in the vid
goal kick out from Gilks. Jones wins it in the air..Sarce picks up the loose ball .and plays effectively a long one-two with Isgrove... getting it back then slotting in a nice shot.
4 passes back to front.
the brilliant effort from Van veen is then on at 1.41. brilliant chip & the play before that. it was surely going in if Gilks hadn't been alert. KVV also had the effort cleared off the line by Baptiste. get him signed up next season for us. he's way to good for Scunny.

agreed. credit to Whites, he first said this about poor movement many months ago...possibly the first 2 or 3 games. I don't get this game of playing "chicken" at the back, trying to lure them in. most of the time opponents don't bite. at times, it felt like it was our only strategy in the first half. I don't mind it at 1-0, if the opponent is daft enough to sit in still at 1-0 down. but at 0-0. they are quite happy with an away point. we need to be going forward. pass and move. get wide. create overloads..winger and full back teaming up . squeeze up the pitch etc etc.

I'd be interested to know why the Referee gave us the penalty. I thought at the time it was for kicking Delfouneso in the face, as he implied/feigned, but he also seems to have hold of Delfouneso's shirt and gives him a little nudge.
Delfouneso was of course quite static when the ball was knocked back. It was difficult to see quite what Delfouneso was trying to do, other than not go into the risk area, and this may be what encouraged the defender to have a kick at a ball Delfouneso should have reached before him. I seriously seriously doubt whether much contact was made with the boot and Delfouneso's face and would cite the twisting dive he offered that led to Dapo's feeble free kick just before
I know I harp on about this but the lack of movement upfront has a lot to do with Delfouneso when selected and the excessive movement of Doyle compounded by awful holding up play. In stark contrast I thought Jones and John made excellent falnk movement and as a result were often the instigators of impressive switching play in that first half. I saw several examples of what last night I termed Delfouneso's give and stay modus operandi. This compared to Darcy earlier and Thomason, Lee and Sarcevic/Isgrove for goal number two.
We looked a lot better when Miller was on both times this last week just because he made angles, held the ball and looked for colleagues. Maddison will surely pick him out better than Doyle or Delfouneso.
Unless IFollow is seriously distorting Delfouneso's contribution from real life I seldom see him on screen. It is frustrating because once or twice each match he makes a stirring run with the ball and he does make a good final ball a lot of the time. He is also quite canny in terms of back tracking and closing down and diverting opponents, albeit not in a way to risk injury or dirty his shirt or intimidate. He even made one good diversionary decoy run. He makes a contribution in our own penalty area too. But the fact remains that we have more than one player capable of hitting accurate long balls into channels that forwards can run.. but we just don't have anyone to do this, Darcy nothwithstanding. To compound matters we have no aerial presence whatsoever in our forward line- hence the low set piece conversion rate- contrast with Beevers and Wheater but also Madine and Alf in our promotion year. Both had shortocomngs in the channel running department, but at least they had other strengths.
IF we are to compete seriously and not just fall away again, in my opinion Evatt needs to consider some interventions ahead of problems. This model won't win enough games..
1. If he's anywhere near good enough Jensen must come in for Gilks who to me looks like a fast bowler in need of his sweater
2 He has to break up Delfouneso and Doyle and use both for targeted periods of games and not the whole
3. He has to get a tune out of Darcy or Politic if fit before too long passes
4. He has to find a better way of taking and converting attacking set pieces
The options Evatt has around much of the rest of what's needed are really quite strong and he is learning and taking more risks, I think......and yes the basic approach to playing football is what personally I want to see and it is showing through
