blimey 3-3. what is it about games in Cumbria.. shades of Barrow..(conceded 2 early..retrieve it late ) although I think we deserved a draw at Barrow. not sure we deserved this one. only 3 shots on target, and all 3 go in. Carlisle had at least 7. i counted 8. 18 shots compared to our 7. massive chance for them when Gilks came out to beat their centre forward to it one vs one..approx 85 mins. Alessandra also hit the bar on 71 mins. up to 85 mins, we'd had 1 shot on target !!!
move to back 4 seemed to help us. didn't quite figure out who was playing were. Jones still seemed to be left wing. Sarce & Isgrove more involved. managed to collect on my "Bolton or draw" bet..but not sure how.
Tutte somehow managed to keep his good record of just 1 defeat when he starts.

This was a game for Darcy. His close control and ability to take on opponents was called for - so much better at it than Delfouneso or Isgrove. Maybe the wind being less strong in the second half helped Carlisle defend better than we did in the first few minutes, but our attack until the last few minutes was quite incapable of using the extra possession. That is definitely where Evatt is missing out. What has he got against Darcy, On that score alone his management must be questioned. With the right signings and the best from the existing staff we should get promotion - and that's all down to Evatt.

I had bolton, or draw too RTF. 25 cents on the 5/1 and 3/1 on the draw, so got a buck back and gained 50 cents. Don't ask about the rest. lol Did you split the bet?

Don't ask about the rest. lol Did you split the bet? no, I did look into splitting it. if it turned out a draw, splitting it, would have lost me a few pennies...but obviously if it turned out a Bolton win, it would have been much more favourable. seeing as the odds favoured Carlisle so much , I didn't fancy losing more money after failing with the Tranmere result.

I was going to write Dreadful First Half and Dreadful Second half but the last 5 minutes slightly changes the last bit.
Dreadful first half because the entire defence decided to play as at Barrow and Leyton Orient. Mass panic every time the ball came near them.
Baptiste just cumbersome and Santos! Well he was shocking. Concedes fouls needlessly and then can’t defend them. Santos also let a ball run under his feet to give them a clear one on one that they missed.
I know it was windy but the first half was diabolical and but for a fluky deflection to set up a goal would have been chronic.
We had 1 shot, 1 corner and 1 penalty claim in the first half. Carlisle had 3 goals, umpteen shots. We just wilted against a physical side.
Dreadful second half because we had most of the possession but up until the 88th minute, we had created nothing in their area and still gave Carlisle 2 or 3 really good chances.
The last 5 minutes cannot overshadow a terrible performance.
We get credit for keeping going but honestly, we were awful.
Marks:-
Gilks - 5 First goal was terrible keeping. After that OK
Kioso - 6 Scored, sent off – a busy game
Jones - 3 He is so far out of position as left wing back, it is embarrassing
Baptiste - 1 Terrible
Santos - 2 Also terrible. He has been sussed out. Put a physical striker on him and he loses it
Delaney - 3 Some really poor passing got us into trouble
Thomason - 6 Very busy – could have scored a winner
Sarcevic - 6 I thought he ran our midfield
Tutte - 6 Good performance despite what was behind him
Delfouneso - 5 Until he scored. I couldn’t think of a contribution from him
Doyle - 6 Very busy as usual. If only the service to him could improve
Greenidge - 5 A bit naïve at times but OK
Isgrove - 5 Started OK then faded then created the equaliser so OK

Another shed load of garbage, of course, but nevertheless a fightback and a near winner, albeit followed by a near loser. It was a game dominated by Storm Bella and if Carlisle were the better side in the first half and during the middle of the second, Bolton's substitutions in the end told and we finished the stronger albeit with a sting in the tail .
Another disastrous start. Is that third or fourth time Bolton have gone down by two goals in the first few minutes of a game? This time Gilks howler followed by poor work from Delaney, albeit with everything flowing from Santos' clumsiness and general inability to mark but also Evatt's insistence on playing Jones at left wing back thus building a dam to any left side attack.
When Baptiste's droop shouldered error gave away a third it looked all up but such a difference was made to morale and possibilities by Thomasson's goal back. In truth he all but missed but he deserved it as he was undoubtedly the most talented BWFC player on view. When rtf analyses that goal I think she may find that he won the ball really well too before Doyle set the move going.
I quite like the potential of Isgrove but for fully thirty minutes he was a awful until a ten minute purple patch when he contributed significantly to two goals and all but set up a third. Sarcevic always looks the most capable of making inroads and his cross for Delfouneso's tap in was excellent even if he had scuffed his earlier chance.
I just do not see the Gethin Jones left plan. But when Thomasson figured out how to help late on even the left offered hope. That said midway through the second half I thought I heard the phrase ' It's Gethin Jones looking for Delfouneso' If I did and even if not I couldn't help musing that Indiana might have been better suited to a quest of such near impossibility. I really feel for Doyle who was coming deeper and deeepr and then turning round to run forward whilst his partner vanished neither left nor right nor centre for almost the whole game. That said he executed a smart hold, and turn at one point, did a good bit of work on the left at another and tapped in a goal by being in the right place. Meanwhile Isgrove had featured heavily and regularly almost always losing the ball ,until his good patch . I think I know the contribution I preferred.
We will be without Kioso on Tuesday but I thought yet again his potential on the right flank was limited and he made a lot of mistakes. He was also poorish defensively today. But his appearance at centre forward saved us the game. What a great header. I think he could be really good in that position. Also a word for Greenidge introduced after several consecutive calamities for Delaney- that nice forward run reignited us at a good time
It wasn't a day for Tutte really with such a wind but he did OK on the ball I thought if not so much off. In the end Bella triumphed. If Evatt has any tactical ability or player awareness, which is very much in question for me he will: put an end to the hopelessly telegraphed slow roll outs to Santos, Delaney and and Baptiste; consider Delaney as a left sided centre back; drop Santos or move him forward because he just cannot mark men; give Kioso some time upfront; drop Delfouneso and use him from the bench for a bit; and invest in a keeper, a central midfielder and an extra goalscorer and begin to use the excellent Thomason in a clear left sided Farrelly/Krancjar type role or for thsoe with longer memories a Neil Young type role. I think also that Darcy must begin to feature more.
Gilks 5 Baptiste 2 Santos 2 Delaney 2 Sarcevic 6 Kioso 5 Thomason 6 Tutte 5 Doyle 6 Delfouneso 4 Jones 3 Isgrove 5 Greenidge 4

Can’t disagree with any of that Andy, especially the Gethin Jones left sided bit. The thing is, if we can all see it, commentators can see it, why can’t Evatt see it? He appears to be making 3xactly the same mistake as with Crellin, being too stubborn to accept it doesn’t work and changing it. Greenidge isn’t a winger, or wing back but for me has more pace and skill going forward than Delaney and should be given a chance instead. Likewise, it’s time Taft was given a chance at CH instead of Santos. We’ve said before that Santos could conceivably play the old Campo role, so why not give him a chance there because he really is proving a liability at the back now teams have sussed him. Isgrove for me adds nothing and despite his one contribution today was largely useless. Equally bad again was Delfouneso who is nowhere near worth a place and would be better as an impact sub off the bench. How Darcy can’t even get on the bench with these two getting in before him I really don’t know but it’s becoming increasingly clear that there’s something between him an Evatt that’s not working and I fear him being away in January, maybe on loan subject to a permanent move. I really want to get behind Evatt but he’s making it really hard with his actions and selections at the moment. Let’s see in January what he comes up with but hopefully his incomings will be a good bit smarter than those he’s got just now.
Outs in January for me, any of:; Comley, Crellin, White, Isgrove, Miller, Delfouneso, Maskell and Baptiste, with incoming Kieran Lea if possible, a good keeper, a genuine left back or winger and at least one proven goalscorer. It may be a tall order but unless he makes significant changes we’re going nowhere.

Keeping on with my optimistic approach, it is essential that we get 6 points from these 2 home games this coming week.
6 points will definitely get us into the mix

I'll jump on the bandwagon if we do. I'll bring the sauerkraut and schnitzel.

bit of video analysis to award a few debits and credits. Carlisle 1st goal. Callum Guy , who got name checked in my preview post, with the assist for Carlisle. Baptiste was marking the the scorer....Gilks also with some blame according to sources i've read. presuming AB got a shout off Gilks ? or was he just going to get beat anyway.?? www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/bolton-player-ratings-vs-carlisle-19523357Santos giving away the free kicks that led to both the 1st &2nd goals. typical Evatt to keep Santos on and sub the other 2 centre backs..not that they weren't blameless. Evatt seems to treat him like the teachers pet. apparently Carlisle commentators kept referring to him throughout the first half as the hapless Santos. an independent view of who's causing the chaos and yet the manager pulls the other 2. not surprised in the slightest. the others have got subbed in other games, but he's bulletproof/teflon for IE. pat on the back to both myself, to David M and to Andy L. all 3 of us have consistently had a more realistic view on him. some of the twitter comments, from the wishful thinking brigade, I kept seeing when he was in his good "form", were just ludicrous like he was the second coming of Bobby Moore/ Franco Baresi. we kept saying..let him do his own thing, looks great..pressure him and he goes from imperious to panicky in a heartbeat. goal 2. Callum guy with another assist. Tutte was marking the scorer. the M.e.n ratings (above) acknowledge this. goal 3. bit harsh on Baptiste...balls just fell at his feet... perhaps could've done better. Delaney initally comes out to challenge Kayode but doesn't slow him up. not sure why Santos doesn't deal with it..he's in the centre, not the left centre back. Delaney has to run around santos/allessandra to get there. by the time he does, it's too late. maybe they should have switched men rather than man mark. our 1st. counter attack goal. starts from a Carlisle long throw. Delaney clears. Carlisle seemed to have stopped it with a good tackle on Doyle. but Thomason then wins it back. back to Doyle. who then finds Kioso. deflected cross then finds Thomason. good running from GT..notice how he makes a dummy run to go front post then checks to go the back. our 2nd. good touch from Sarce as that's quite a firmly hit pass by Isgrove. Delf poaches..shocking defending from their no.32. just stands there ! our 3rd. good initial corner from Isgrove. comes back to him. cross to Kioso. not much to add. that 2nd goal they key one...makes them really edgy & the crowd..and you just feed off it.

Very impressed with Steve Eyre today as co-commentator on iFollow. If he had been in charge we would have won! Read the game perfectly from the start and predicted we would come back when we had the wind. If IE could listen and LEARN from him we could do a lot better. He has a real football brain. Unemployed at the moment too.
Agree with all the good points made above by our select, astute band of TFF fans. Nice to hear more from RTF - Very good points and stats Ann

good piece by Marc Iles. pointing a few fingers towards Evatt, and the limitations HE IMPOSES. I thought the tone would have been great comeback ..paper over the cracks type stuff..as the BN does have that well known tendency to toe the party line...understandably to some extent..but it can go o.t.t and get a bit sickly. www.theboltonnews.co.uk/sport/18971548.carlisle-united-3-bolton-wanderers-3-marc-iless-big-match-verdict/it's like what Big Sam used to do to Arsenal. rough them up and get after them.. play to aerial strengths, target certain weakness etc.. and Wenger moaned about how this wasn't cricket etc. even the highlights on Quest referred to Evatt's quotes pre-match about how we are the best footballing side in the Div. when BSA then beats them, it's over-achievement... you're beating a side that on paper you have no right to beat. for "bad Wenger" ( in his non-winning phase) it's failure letting an inferior side get the better of you. most comments under the article agreeing with it. great one from the inimitable Julie Moores : " This clown will pick the same slowcoaches in the back 3 on Tuesday then change when it's too late." fair point. if Kioso could do a job there later in the game , why has he not been tried there. always reacting too late to things (crellin, crawford etc ) . Brocky also an option. or just play a back 4. also like i said on sat'day..seeing as Greenidge had done well defensively at Cheltenham handling their direct game, that's another option. also speaking about self-imposed limitations... get a keeper who's good with his feet or just a keeper who makes saves. if you want both...you're bound to be paying a premium. do you get defender who just defends or a defender who's good with the ball. again..basic job means accepting people like Taft perhaps. we know why Santos never gets subbed or dropped. he'll always prioritise his football ideas. winners prioritise winning. a lot easier when you're in a long winning run to then to tweak your football up. take risks when your confident, not when you aren't. move up the leagues , sign better players. etc.
