sat'day 26/12 k.o 3pm Carlisle are in 3rd place. 10 points above us. recent form. 4 wins and 1 loss - lost last game to 2ND placed Forest green. played 19. won 11. drew 2. lost 6. their goal diff is +10 to our -7. just 5 goals scored better, but 12 fewer conceded. Carlisle have 7 clean sheets. ( 4 at home. 3 away) we have 6. ( 4 at home..just 2 away ) for the record Oldham still have 0 clean sheets. next worst, Barrow on 2. best have 9..Salford and Tranmere. Carlisle have FAILED TO SCORE in 5 games. importantly none of Carlisle's blanks have been at homeso they are pretty confident there. we've failed in 6. 4 at home. 2 away. out of 9 home games, they've won 8. lost 1. much more flaky away . 5 losses away. we've played 5 of the current top half sides away from home. lost 3. drew 1. and the 1 win was our last away game to Cheltenham. despite their attack not being the best in terms of goals. 27 goals is ranked joint 9th. it's NOT FOR THE WANT OF TRYING. they are ranked top for both shots 17.4 per game ,& shots on target 5.4 pg they are not fussed about possession. ranked 22nd in the lge. and their pass success rate is THE worst in this Div with just 57.4 compared to 74.3% for us. sounds like they are quite direct. speculative. don't just play safe passes etc. topscorer is Jon Mellish. a 23yr old midfielder, who only converted from a defender in Feb '20. next best has just 4. Lewis Alessandra a 31 yr old striker. no great pedigree. 3 other players are on 3 goals. the best of those seems to be Joshua Kayode. a 20 yr old attacker. he's currently rated as the 7th best player in this Div. very good with aerial duels. 2 assists too. www.whoscored.com/Regions/252/Tournaments/9/Seasons/8306/Stages/18827/PlayerStatistics/England-League-Two-2020-2021even higher up in those rating in 4th place is Callum Guy. seems to be their main creator with 5 assists. really surprised to see Gime Toure isn't doing better. he was getting rave reviews on the highlights EFL on Quest early season. 0 goals & 2 assists. a brilliant dribbler. very exciting to watch. the Toure stuff starts at 7.55 in this clip. some other good info about the way Carlisle play around 8.40 mark. even though the clip is from mid Oct, the stats are still accurate now in that they somehow manage to shoot loads, while concede very few shots too. quite a nice combo if you can work it ! a couple of corkers in his showreel. tails off a bit later on. seems like your typical erratic, mercurial winger. catch him on a hot day..and you don't stand a chance. frustrating many others i'd imagine. this next vid shows that great dribble at 0.43 by Toure, leading to the assist for Kayode's goal. but also the long throws of Kayode at 1.20 and 1.30. WE HAVE SCORED IN 12 OF OUR LAST 14 LGE GAMES..just blanking in the Orient game & this last game to Tranmere. we've scored 22 lge goals now. : Doyle 8. Delf 4 Sarce 3. Kioso 2 Crawford 1 Jones 1 Isgrove 1 Delaney 1 o.g 1 ( vs salford) 16 assists : Crawford 4 Delf 2 Baptiste 2. Jones 2 all these 6 have 1 each. Sarce, Kioso. Doyle, Greenidge, Gnahoua, Santos prediction : on paper we should lose it. but this is exactly the type of game, where we show respect, play like we did vs Salford or Cheltenham, or Harrogate or Cambridge etc.... and we do better than expected. defend deeper. keep defensive shape. more compact. small gaps. be a bit more direct. play on the counter and catch them off-guard. etc. i'll go 1-1.

look back to that 1st link i posted above- sky sports..freeze it at 6.41. it shows MK dons with 62.7% possession....highest in europe ( well of the big 5 lges & all eng top 4 div's )
from mid October...wondered where they are now.... currently 17th in lge 1. 2 points above the relegation zone.
still over 60% poss'n. ranked 18th for goals. & bottom half for shots & shots on target.
sound familiar ?
i'd agree with his statement at 6.42.."i'm a fan IF it leads to lots of goals scoring opportunities being created. "

i'd recommend between 13.30 & 19.00 in this vid. bits on Carlisle manager Chris Beech (former assistant at Rochdale to Keith Hill ) the 3 aspects of management he's doing right..unlike many others. and more about the big overhaul with 12-14 new players bought in, in the summer. and how they've gone from 18th placed finish in the lge last season, to big promotion contenders this season. brought in new high pressing, attacking style...one that delivers on it's promises unlike certain others i could name

Is it now time to rip up Plan A. And reinvent? Heres the arguments.
No - our best results and performances have been again "better" teams and games we are expected not to. Those possession teams make it easier for us to set up and punish them. Changing now would be mad.
No, but yes after this game - for the reasons above but for the home games or less fancied teams we need a system that we create more.
Yes, change it - those games (Cheltenham, Cambridge, Harrogate) games are not the basis for a system. They are the exception to the rule and overall the system doesnt work.
If i go to the kitchen for lunch and think i fancy am omelette and find theres no eggs. I change the plan. I dont stick to the omelette and start looking for egg alternatives.
Brockbank and Jones are right backs. They're not left backs and certainly not left wing backs. In other words. They aint eggs. (Thats one for Keith Hill)When your system is so reliant on those roles why would you try and "wing" it.
So if he does stick to he HAS to play Mascoll. If he doesnt rate Mascoll ditch the system.
Also look at the bench on Saturday. Was there any way, injury aside, that Delfouenso and Doyle were not playing the full 90? Nope. No wonder complacency sets in.
Delfouenso on his day gets in the first 11 but attitude lacking. As someone said he started as an exciting premier league youngster. A few years later he dropped to L1. I would drop him just we have attacking options on the bench and to send the message. No one is guaranteed a place.

I get the argument that against better sides, it's only worked as they come at us and we counter. the trouble is you could make the argument the other way, if teams sit deep against us..... why in the world do we have 3 centre backs with maybe 1 attacker to mark. you then end up having to create overlaps by sending your centre backs forward. Santos strangely not really been doing it, though he is decent at it. the flaw is, if he cocks up and gives away possession, he simply cannot get back. Baptiste is decent getting forward. always was as fullback in his previous spell..capable of grabbing a goal. the odd decent cross. more of a bonus than something you'd want to rely on. Delaney isn't. he's a fish out of water. you wouldn't expect Beevers or Wheater to be..they are decent at what they do. in relation to the 1st point, i'm not convinced Harrogate or Cambridge were possession sides. even Cheltenham...even Evatt not convinced about their passing...plenty directness etc www.whoscored.com/Regions/252/Tournaments/9/Seasons/8306/Stages/18827/TeamStatistics/England-League-Two-2020-2021Cambridge are 21st in possession rankings. they just had threats..topscorer who we had to be wary off...in a Mourinho sense.... adapt to threats. we're not good enough to just do our own thing and let them worry about us. doesn't mean we're rubbish. just like Mou would do... attentive defence... midfield fill spaces.. let Son & Kane do the biz going forward...like we could let our main threats.. Doyle & Sarce . nobody ever said Fergie didn't play good football...yet nobody said he was as obsessed with possession as these Guardiola clones....this "paint by numbers"...passing it out from the back styles. just looks like mindless band-wagon jumping. great if it works, but when it doesn't..reel it back in. you're not a leader, you're just a follower , you're aren't an innovator, you're just a copier..and when it goes wrong, you ain't got the brains to figure out why.

LOSS % WHEN TUTTE DOESN'T START . 73% 11 LOSSES. ALL COMPS. ( 7 IN LGE )

www.theboltonnews.co.uk/sport/18964543.bolton-wanderers-welcome-back-key-duo-carlisle-united-boxing-day-trip/Kioso & Tutte back for Carlisle. good news. not the first time we've thought Tutte is a bit injury prone. is it possible we could take a bit more care with him this time. although admittedly, if you're 1-0 up and you sub him off early, it's still a risk to the result bearing in mind his influence. might be a better idea..realising the importance of that role and getting a better solution in there..a midfield 3, or maybe Kioso in there. www.soccerbase.com/teams/team.sd?team_id=354&teamTabs=resultsTutte's only started 9 games, but we've won 6 of them.. and even the 2 draws are better than performances & results without him. the 2 draws were Grimsby at home. 0-0. clean sheet. shielding that defence. and away at Cambridge...1-1. again ..would have been a clean sheet but for Crellin's error.

Blimey..even by his standards that is a bit of a stretch. yeah we gifted some goals, but as David M put quite rightly on the Tranmere thread, we hardly had a decent shot in anger at their keeper.
i'll just post a few comments of others. even those who have more faith in Evatt than me ( hard to have less ..lol ) must cringe at this.
<<Tranmere fan..but you can't disagree with the sentiment. if we'd beat a team 3-0 away & their manager came out with that.

OH MY GOD.....i've just had a look back to that BN story the Tranmere fan quoted. don't actually remember reading it at the time. some absolute gold in it...not just the stupid headline. www.theboltonnews.co.uk/sport/18695614.bolton-wanderers-ian-evatt-hopes-one-up-liverpool-man-city-boss/I was discussing this with the wife last night – Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp didn’t win anything in their first seasons,” he said. “When you come into clubs and have to rebuild, integrate a new way of playing into players, it can be difficult.
“However, this is a different situation, because we have managed to recruit players who fit the specific positions.
“They were left with squads of players and had to develop the way they played. This squad can play the way we’re asking them to. We have recruited them all on a very position-specific basis.

As a sucker for punishment, I’ve succumbed to iFollow again for this one, despite promising myself I wouldn’t after Saturday, so I’m glad it looks like Andy Tutte will at least be back to tighten up midfield. Not really fussed with Kioso, he’s one who can be returned for me. I’d actually like to see Hickman given another chance at RWB because for me he’s the only one who actually got behind defenders and put crosses in. Evatt claimed they were inaccurate but it looked more like nobody there to take advantage to me and at least he did get crosses in unlike the others. Evatt won’t but I’d drop Delfouneso for this one. He does absolutely nothing to help the team and I’m afraid his occasional little cameos are not good enough to be an ever present when we have the likes of Darcy stuck on the bench. As usual my confidence is low that we have the tools to score goals but if we can keep the against column down, we are capable of sneaking one like we did at Cheltenham. I don’t see many particularly good sides in L2, including Carlisle, so I’d expect at least a point on Saturday, so I’ll go for 1-1 this weekend.

just had a bit of an original thought re Evatt's style of play. think it was Jack Dearden on Radio Manc before the Salford game..who said can you play this Barcelona/Man City style of play without their players. these types of teams score 100+ goals & have MASSIVE points differences over even 5th to 10th place finished. ok they might have 1 or 2 rivals pushing them fairly close like a Madrid or Liverpool etc but completely dominant over the rest of the pack.
last year Liverpool had about 40 pt gap to 5th place. and 50 pts to 10th place.
just a random year...Barca won in 18/19 30 pts above 4th place. 40pts above 10th.
last full yr we have info for...18/19 Lincoln won lge 2 with 85 pts ( don't forget we play 46 games not 38 ) . their gap was about 10 pts to 5th. about 20 pts to mid-table. as you might expect. it's much tighter.
I think to play this style Evatt wants to play...you don't just have to be a bit better than the rest, you have to have this level of dominance. we'll open up and be expansive, because you can't hurt us..... like a boxer dropping his guard because he knows he's soooo dominant. open up..punch for punch..shot for shot.
it's funny how Evatt keeps using the "dominant" word even when it's totally inappropriate....as if he's trying to live out this dream, rather than deal with reality.

Spot on RTF all these teams scored goals and that is why they dominated so much. In any of the years we were successful, we also scored goals in abundance. We had groups of strikers not just one or two whereas at the moment we realistically have just one in Doyle. Delfouneso can be discounted because to me he’s more a liability than an asset. Any player that you can’t rely on is a liability and we have an abundance of them at the moment, which is why we’re struggling. Sign Lea for midfield, a decent left footed, left wing back and as many strikers as you have room for. Gilks is fine until the summer and in a worst case scenario, we could sign an emergency keeper if needed. For me the biggest weakness is up top. We create numerous chances in every game but either through poor shooting or a lack of composure or awareness we fluff them. Teams just aren’t frightened of us and it allows and even encourages, them to push men forward. Take Tranmere last week. We should have had that game done and dusted in the first 20 minutes but we missed every chance we created. Tranmere realised we were no threat and it encouraged them to attack us. Goals win games and it amazes me how many supposed Professional managers don’t realise the games that simple. I think Evatt is beginning to realise that so hopefully he’ll do something about it in January?
