I don’t believe that Bolton will be playing football in non league but I do believe that unless we can get winning game’s with a settled side we won’t even make the playoffs. Ian needs to use all his squad and maybe loan a solid experience centre back I’ll be getting a ticket for Saturday’s game against Grimsby hoping for 3 points stay safe one and all COYWM

I think last night's performance was much more encouraging than what we saw against Forest Green, Bradford ,Colchester. Newport, even Harrogate. Yes, it once again showed how most of our defence are not good at playing "from the back" and we need a more experienced keeper, and that the striking cupboard apart from Doyle and Delfouneso is pretty bare, but I took heart from the number of chances created against a good side and the number of telling balls from midfield. Particularly I saw in the performance of 17-years-old Bolton-born Riley, whom I had never heard of before last night, someone who, given the chance, could become a powerhouse in our midfield and a really good player in the future (I would like to see him in again v Grimsby). His range of passing -including a couple of exquisite crossfield efforts, and his determination in the tackle to me heralded the sort of young player we have long sought. In short I am saying that with the right team selection and a lot more control in the defence Ian Evatt has the material to get a good team together, and I would say on last night's showing it ought to include many of our academy graduates, including Darcy(used last night in a forward role to save his energy), Senior, Edwards (when fit) and Alexander, who surely is on a par with Crellin. Really Kenglo, you were encouraged by last night? I must have been missing the positive vibes you and others saw about the game last night and maybe I’m being too hard but honestly, I didn’t see anything that remotely impressed me, other than as you say, the performance of young Riley and I thought Darcy was awful and it certainly won’t have done his first team chances any good at all. I very much doubt you’ll see any of Darcy, Senior or Alexander as first team regulars despite the failures of many of our new signings. I think it’s going to be one of those seasons where we just don’t know what to expect on match day. I’m sure we will wallop some teams but then be complete pants against others for no reason. That said it is still early days and IE still has to experiment to find his best team but if the defence keeps playing stupid balls across defence like yesterday, it will only make things that much harder.

Just one thing to add to the very fair comments, positive and negative. I don't think I have ever seen such abysmally poor free kicks and throw ins. Why waste free kicks by tapping it a couple of yards to the side, thereby immediately putting the receiver under pressure. I'm all for playing the beautiful game, but you have earn that right by skill and lots of practice. We just aren't good enough and Evatt needs to realise it. And why do they take free kicks so quickly? Clearly Evatt craves a high tempo, high pressing, quick turn around type of game, but we're not Premier league standard or anything like fit enough. I've wondered a couple of times if we leave a lot our energy on the training pitch as a result of high tempo sessions. Time for a bit of back to basics. Not chuck his ambition out entirely but temper it with some realism.

Exactly right Alp and add to that the rush by Crellin to throw the ball out to defenders who are immediately closed down and pressured. I sometimes wonder whether managers ignore the obvious by sticking doggedly to a system whether it’s working or not. As you say, you need both skill and fitness to play the way IE wants to and from what we’ve seen, the players he has are up to neither. It took him two seasons to get his Barrow team to the level he wanted so maybe we shouldn’t be too critical yet. Just signing 20 odd players and getting them to gel is some task but expecting them to be able to play a completely new system as well is perhaps expecting too much and is why they currently look disjointed. I’m sure IE sees all this, how could he not, but I expect him to continue to pursue his beliefs and so he should. We’ve got some very winnable games coming up so assuming we get a good haul of points from those, it should calm nerves a bit as well as adding a bit of confidence within the squad. Let’s hope that starts with Grimsby this Saturday!

Yes I know how many faulty moves and bad tactics are currently on show, but last night against a good League One side we should have won if we had taken our chances and particularly if we had not gifted two goals and missed a penalty. Yes Darcy wasn't what we were used to last season yesterday, but we all thought he wasn't up to the engine-room physically, and I detected a move by Ian Evatt to use his skills and conserve his energy .Similarly I did say we badly lacked strikers last night and that Gnouhae would more likely turn out to be a dribbling winger for us. I also felt that the players in defence as yet were unable to play the ball out of defence in the way playing from the back requires. But now I feel able to list the players that will gel into a good League Two side and probably take us close this season, viz: An experienced GK,Hickman, Senior, Brockbank, Sancho, Delaney, Gordon, Riley, Comley, White, Tutte, Sarcevic, Darcy, Gnahoue, Doyle, Miller, Delfouneso. Give or take one or two others and I am sure Evatt can iron out the flaws and produce a good side. Remember, I was as cynical as you, 63, after the opening games, but after watching yesterday's match I now see a team emerging if he arranges it right and defensive techniques improve. I may be wrong but at first sight in Riley I see a very valuable player and future captain in prospect. Similarly I have yet to see the "Manchester Messi" in our Captain Sarcevic, but remain hopeful.

I think you’re right about that group Kenglo, I’d probably just add Greenidge to that who I don’t think we’ve seen the best from yet and we might of course lose White with his recent injury. Like you I think that squad should be good enough to compete in most games and if IE can get his systems right, who knows where we can finish? Also like you, I thought Riley stood out with his coolness and ability. There was definitely something about him that was impressive but of course it was only one game and probably too early to judge but certainly he looked to have real promise. Sarcevic hasn’t impressed me either but again it’s early days so if all these players have underperformed so far there must be much more to come from them so hopefully they can start on Saturday. I’ve got my pass and am looking forward to it but oh how I wish we could actually get into the stadium again.

a montage of Regan Riley's best moments from the midweek game. I didn't buy the game in, so all new to me as none of this in brief highlights that were put out officially.
