Evatts preferred way of playing seems to involve us starting the next play by passing the ball across the penalty box edge from left to right and vice versa. Our passing isn't either accurate or crisp enough to be a successful tactic. Something needs to change.

That's why I said before, it's going to be a long season and a long way back to Lge 1.

Quite an enjoyable game.
Positives:- we created some chances in the later stages of the game
Negatives:- A lot of rank bad passing; poor ball control and poor ball retention.
We went in 2-0 down at half time after 3 terrible errors.
Firstly, Taft passed the ball across our area so badly that Delaney couldn’t get it and the Shrewsbury forward nipped in to score an easy goal.
Then White made a hash of a penalty with a fancy run up and poor shot.
Then Riley, who had come on for White, was caught in possession just outside our area for a straightforward chance which they took well.
Shrewsbury had obviously watched us play and every time we tried to play the ball out from the back, they pressed and tackled us to the extent that they won the ball off us deep in our half. In fact, they were very hard in the tackles and Josh Vela was lucky to survive with only a yellow after 4 bad tackles.
Attack wise, Gnahoua missed a sitter when Gordon broke into the box. He tried to sidefoot home only to hit the keeper when a hard shot would have surely gone in.
Second half, we were slow off the mark. We hardly got a kick for a good 15 minutes but then woke up and attacked. Unfortunately, we had no one upfront to create danger.
We did score when Greenidge headed a free kick back across goal for Senior to score.
We had a lot of ball after that but our basic skill of controlling the ball let us down. Both Hickman and Mascoll had half chances in the last minute but couldn’t control their shots.
In end some useful stuff from the players but basic football skills (i.e. passing & ball control) cost us the match
Marks:-
Crellin - 5 No chance with either goal but his distribution was poor.
Hickman - 5 Not as dynamic as when he plays farther forward. He cannot take throw-ins by the way.
Gordon - 6 Some decent attacking by him. Shrewsbury often played the ball into space behind him.
Senior - 6 A decent performance. A few iffy passes but OK.
Taft - 5 Awful on first goal.
Delaney - 5 Partly asleep for the first goal.
White - 5 Dreadful attempt at a penalty.
Comley - 4 His passing was really poor.
Lockett - 3 I’m afraid he was lost in this game. Just no impact.
Darcy - 6 Look better in the second half when he ran at the Shrewsbury defence.
Gnahoua - 4 Missed a sitter.
Riley - 6 Despite his error for the second goal, I thought he looked really promising.
Greenidge - 5 Won a couple of good headers in the opposition box including the goal.
Mascoll - 5 Played on the left side of midfield and looked cumbersome.

Actually I was quite encouraged tonight True we gifted them two with sweet passes from Taft and then debutant Riley into the penalty area and weakly missed a penalty at the other end, but in between we created some good openings which were either missed or cleared off the line but I'm still nervous when our keeper and defenders try to play it out from the goal area in the current Arsenal way. I don't think we're quite up to that as wots rightly says the Evatt influence on these players' techniques is not quite there yet. Really we played without strikers tonight, as Lockett didn't get a kick and Gnahoue plays more like a winger. There was some good creative play, however, with excellent contributions from Senior, Darcy and substitute Riley, who at 17, and despite his error in giving the second goal away, definitely looks a player for the future. '.m still not happy with Crellin. He doesn't go for the high catch, and I think he may have done better with their second. All in all the work in progress was plain to see in my opinion, and looking forward to Saturday

Just got home from work good to see we lost this stupid Mickey Mouse cup after 75% of the teams wanted this cup to be shelved so I’m not to disappointed with bowing out of this cup save it for the league. Stay safe one and all COYWM

Come, come, Whites, you have to look for the silver lining. Sorry Kenglo but I didn’t see a silver lining. That for me was arguably the worst and most inept performance that I can ever remember seeing from a Bolton team. I’ve seen some rubbish in my time but I honestly can’t take anything positive out of that game. Everything was wrong and if the first team play like that as well then I really do fear for us. The number of times that Crellin threw the ball out to players who were already heavily marked resulting in panic stations was alarming. The players are static, their first touch is atrocious and there is little movement off the ball to be in position to receive a pass. Their body shape when they do receive is all wrong, facing backwards instead of forwards leaving only a sideways or backwards ball available. Maybe I’m expecting too much because I need to remember where we are and the quality of players we’ve been forced to sign. I suppose if they can keep us up they will have done their job and without the signing restrictions we are under we can maybe next year start to sign some players who at least have the basic skills?

According to IE we snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. We should have won it and were unlucky not to get a draw.
I didn't see the game, but there's only so many times he can come out with this, in games where we haven't even drawn never mind won.

I;ve just watched the highlights on YTube. The defending on the 1st goal was schoolboy stuff, as was the 2nd goal, as was the penalty. The goal, well taken and I'm happy for Senior. Only the highlights remember, but as implied, IE is talking crap. If anything I'd agree, yet again with whites... abysmal...
Forget promotion, it won't happen. We don't have enough depth in the squad. IE's plan, the tactics I will agree with. To get today's lot, or even the Saturday squad to match IE vision, well it's not on.
I'll be glad to see us win some, lose some and take it from there.
We're a club with a good and long history, but we are no Man City.
We won't see Lge 1 in the next three years.
Someone made a quote of Parky on IE's tactics, either here or on the BN site and Parky said, 'Ask me in May'. Says it all.
I'll buy a ticket for the Oldham match, 'cos I think that's our next leveller.
My tips for relegation are two of Southend, Grimsby and Barrow. I think we'll be safe, no matter.

I think we’ll be safe too wots. Even with such a poor squad I think we will cobble enough points together to finish mid table. To be fair, I think we do have enough decent players to get higher than that if they all have a good season but the way the injuries are going that’s doubtful and with so many consecutive games to play results will be up and down. I think dismantling the U23 team will cost us because there’s little chance for the youngsters to get game time and sitting on the bench every week like Darcy, Alexander and Senior, isn’t going to help. Reviewing last night, which I still class as abysmal, I though Riley looked a good prospect and when Greenidge is fit I think he’ll be good for us. Other than that I thought we were poor. Playing too many kids together, especially against a big strong team like Shrewsbury, did them no favours but that’s down to Evatt. I can understand him wanting to play them with reduced opportunities but not all at once like last night. Anyway, out of the cups he won’t get much chance again.

I think last night's performance was much more encouraging than what we saw against Forest Green, Bradford ,Colchester. Newport, even Harrogate. Yes, it once again showed how most of our defence are not good at playing "from the back" and we need a more experienced keeper, and that the striking cupboard apart from Doyle and Delfouneso is pretty bare, but I took heart from the number of chances created against a good side and the number of telling balls from midfield. Particularly I saw in the performance of 17-years-old Bolton-born Riley, whom I had never heard of before last night, someone who, given the chance, could become a powerhouse in our midfield and a really good player in the future (I would like to see him in again v Grimsby). His range of passing -including a couple of exquisite crossfield efforts, and his determination in the tackle to me heralded the sort of young player we have long sought. In short I am saying that with the right team selection and a lot more control in the defence Ian Evatt has the material to get a good team together, and I would say on last night's showing it ought to include many of our academy graduates, including Darcy(used last night in a forward role to save his energy), Senior, Edwards (when fit) and Alexander, who surely is on a par with Crellin.
