When I think of target men ,I think of Drogba...Hughes..players of that ilk...players who are strong but skilful in their own right...Madine may be strong.....I would NEVER accuse him of being skilful !......his style of play dictated our style of play...Bloody awful

Madine should have been replaced, end of. Check out today's BN. Parky says that they're going to be practicing set plays and corners, 'cos he wants the goals that the defenders scored in Lge 1. So, no change in play, but loss of the main player in said tactics, if you can call it that.

We are in danger of going from one-dimensional hoof to Madine for 90 minutes, to one-dimensional play-it-on-the-floor via flimsy forwards for 90 minutes, if PP tries to play to the remaining players' rather weak creative abilities. I would disagree with your assertion that our style has changed from one dimensional hoof to Madine to one dimensional play it on the floor. WS63:- I swear some of you guys can't read what is actually written!! Note that I wrote.... "in danger of..... if....." There is absolutely no assertion that it " has changed"

They not practiced this before...must be a new tactic ? How about coaching professional footballers to pass the ball......beggars belief

Set plays, corners, new tactic, must be. Can't hoof from defence and score from set plays in same event, so must be new. There's also something new to think about, passing to own players. Clearly not been on the agenda before. Could have possibilities. Must give it a try. However will spoil our possession stats, so maybe not.

It seems to me that the concept of being in danger of moving to playing the ball on the floor to smaller forwards is not indeed danger but what many would like to watch and indeed predict would lead to better results. It would also be a style adopted by most teams in the division except Cardiff and Sheffield Wednesday? The danger is that they would fail and finish up hoofing it in the air to smaller forwards? Yet again hoofing it in the air to Madine failed miserably a) because he had no support and it always came back and b) because although excellent at getting a head on a ball he couldn't actually direct a header. It's easily forgotten that Madine was ever present in those first 11 games. Anyway he's gone!
Of course , yes, if we could have afforded or found a Kevin Davies/ Mixu type player it would have enhanced our options and even more so had we found an Okocha, Frandsen in midfield. The best teams seldom play with a central target man all the time. Arsenal's previous use of Giroud being a prime example. But our more realistic option was ever to convert an existing player into the latter role and get more form ALF in the former. That we added Clough and Walker was an absolute bonus.
PP has to be credited with the strategies that have stopped others playing, especially the possession teams. We are very good at not conceding goals despite huge imbalances in possession. But it's so boring and that's the problem for me. The target man v creative midfield debate is academic . We haven't got either
meanwhile bored as I may be what on earth am I going to do tomorrow if as looks possible the weather here and thw travel problems to and from Bolton force a missed game. O for the days when we had postponements!?
