No Pratley ( out for six weeks). Much speculation re what Brendan R may do in the press but what about NL. It's a good chance to win. dare he try out any of the new acquisitions? Are they even eligible? Andy, I don't think that any of our new signings can play. I think the rule is that only those players eligible for the first meeting on January 24th can play in the replay so that rules out all of yesterday's signings plus the Portuguese lad we signed last week. One other question regarding players and availibilty for games. Am I right in thinking that the rules say that we can only have 5 loanees in our 18 man match squad. If so, I think that we have 6 on loan at the moment. One is Amos who must be in the squad so one of Rochina, Le Fondre, Slavchev, Bannan or Janko must be left out every match. You are absolutely right on both counts davidm.

Elated when the PK went in! Deflated when Danns got sent off! Had Gudjohnson not headed straight at the keeper and his effort gone in we would have been 2-0 and it would have changed the game (at the time) I feel gutted we have now folded in the last seconds of the game for the second time now to let our lead slip No doubt AndyL will be banging on about Longerens performance which will entice our Joanna to comment! All in all I have mixed emotions on tonight's result! I thought we played well but let ourselves down badly with lack of concentration in the final stages (again) Danns should be feeling very guilty with his rash challenge knowing he was on a yellow already! NEXT!!

That was a disappointing end to a good night. Can't knock the effort today for most. The negatives I can pick out are the obvious ones. Neil Danns should be very apologetic, silly flying in with defenders there and in the 65th minute at 1-0. He probably should have been subbed before that but its up to him to show more discipline. Can't argue with either yellow. Never had a chance after that.
Couple more negative points. 1 is out of our hands but why aren't we allowed to play signings who are no cup tied, just because they were signed after the first match. I've never heard this rule before and it doesn't make sense. You sell players in Jan and you buy them, if they aren't cup tied they should be allowed to play.
Secondly and second time in a week that a late(5 added mins again, 4 subs and 2 goals???) We've been beaten by a "wonderstrike" but how many times did we allow these players to shape and shoot.
Moxey isn't very fast to react and seems to want time on the ball in his own penalty box, Feeney just doesn't do enough for me. He showed that when he got the ball and crossed it we looked dangerous but he offered so little. Mills did brilliantly well and I can see exactly why we did that, i said before we needed Heskey/Davies to play as a battering ram give them trouble because they're suspect at the back, get Mignolet rattled and you've half a chance. I also think Trotter came on and was large anonymous. Sterling lost him for the goal and he was in charge of closing down Coutinho. He had the freshest legs in the game but you would't have thought that.
Lonergan made a great couple of saves, kicking off again. Dervite and Wheater were fantastic, Ream and Moxey did ok, everything good came from Feeney yet we saw glimpses when he really needs to start kicking on and getting Man of the match type performances. Vela, Clough and Danns had a tough ask but that was made almost impossible with the red card. Penalty was harsh, if that was Stevie G I'd be furious. Eidur had some great touches but should have put the game to bed with that header and Mills did as well as could be expected. Great ball for the Gudjohnson chance.
Lennon got it spot on for an hour, can't help the tired legs. Not sure why a second and third sub didn't come on.
But without the new signings plus Bogdan, Pratley, Mark and Craig Davies, Heskey and Clayton. That was...I almost said Sterling effort but i'll stick to "good" effort. Bolton back on the radar. Lets take this spirit and get points on the board for what is a very tough run in the Championship.

So near yet so far. Thankfully we were spared extra time which would have detracted from the praise and credit we deserved holding on to a very good team is ver two legs with a visibly threadbare squad.
Danns after such a splendid first leg reached rock bottom tonight. He was off the pace quite a lot probably missing Pratley but we were just about getting away with it until his stupid challenge after Clough lost possession. With 11 we might possibly have crawled to the line but with 10 one Gudjohnsen on empty and the other Mills who had run himself into the ground in an unfamiliar role we were overwhelmed . Indeed only a couple of really good saves by Lonergan and a fortunate post got us to the last 5. In the end they won the war of attrition.
It was brave of NL to play Mills up front no doubt on the strength of the last 20 at Rotherham and I thought he did OK winnning a few balls in the air and getting stuck in when he could. Clough brightened up a few plays and won the penalty but was caught in possession too often. He will learn that simple passes can sometimes be best. Eidur was again pretty flat I thought. It was a cool penalty but he was short of what it takes and what he once had in front of goal. He had a wonderful chance for 2-0 which we might have protected for 15 mins but once that was gone we were on the back foot
probably our strength was in defence. Dervite and Wheater did really well , Dervite especially. Moxey was there to solidify the left and did so and this also allowed Ream protection and time to play some good balls. Vela was again our best midfielder but he was really up against it competing against Gerrard and Coutinho.
Lonergan had a shaky start almost spilling a shot and his distribution was again erratic. He redeemed himself with two brilliant saves . He looked rooted for the winner but it was a fine shot. In general he did well enough.
Feeney had a really shaky first half almost always in no man's land whether defending or attacking. But not for the first time he persevered and in the second half became a bit of a threat albeit reminding us of his limitations at the death when clumsily running a ball out after our final foray
overall a really creditable effort against a superior team and against all odds we were within ten minutes of victory but a game which illuminated our threadbare resources . We had no subs of note and when Trotter came on he gave a cameo of hopelessness. I despair. It was there to be won but I sense our better display was perhaps at Anfield
Lonergan 7 Wheater 8 Dervite 9 Ream 7 Moxey 6 Vela 6 Danns 3 Feeney 6 Eidur 5 Clough 6 Mills 6. Trotter2

I thought the whole team played really well. The confidence and enjoyment that DF drained from us is now back so that we did not look out of place in that classy company....until Danns lost his composure. Ironically, he had been playing really well in a difficult role protecting the back 3 who I thought were extremely good. In fact, not one player let us down, as the TV commentator made clear. He had Lonergan as the best player on the park, but there were many challengers for that nomination on both sides. I hope the boys don't feel so deflated that they can't keep that level of performance and endeavour back in the championship. At least we have some new recruits now who may be able to cover for tiredness and injuries. I wouldn't want to try to find fault with any of our players, though obviously Danns needs to learn from his mistake, and Trotter looked what he is....a passenger who fails to have impact and drifts without purpose or effect.....there, I HAVE found fault!!

We had the tie wrapped up until the sending off the look on Neil Lennon's face at the time told the whole story, Trotter was dire when he came on but the good thing to come out of all this is the £1m into the coffers.

Yet another late sickener.
It was a proud performance but it could have been so good. There are 3 major points as to why it wasn’t glory for us:-
1. Danns’ sending off. Even if he was unlucky with the first booking, it was totally unprofessional to lunge in like that. From that moment on, it was a bigger struggle.
2. Eidur’s missed header which would have put us 2-0 up. No power in it and, more importantly, no direction. If he had headed it sideways both Mills and Clough could have had a tap-in.
3. Trotter’s absolutely awful defensive play in the last 5 minutes. He was badly at fault for both goals. He was next to Sterling on the edge of the box but chose to stand still when Sterling moved onto the pass. If he had been awake, he could have blocked any effort. The winner, albeit a wonder shot, came when he was between Courtino and the goal but he just stood off and let him shoot. He is so slow and sluggish.
A really good performance though. When you think that we had no out-and-out strikers on the pitch and the most inexperience bench, it was gut-wrenching to be beaten like that.
Full credit to the team – let’s keep it going in the league now.
Lonergan - 7 I don’t think that he had any chance with the goals although I would like to see the angle that Sterling scored from. One really good save from Can. One negative – I thought his kicking was awful.
Dervite - 9 After Saturday’s shocker, he was excellent. Solid, good tackles.
Wheater - 9 Like a rock – excellent.
Ream - 8 Again, he seems to play better against better teams.
Feeney - 6 One excellent centre for Gudjohnsen’s header but he is not a wing back.
Moxey - 7 Very steady and some good runs in the first half. After his early season performances, maybe there is hope.
Vela - 7 Some lovely movement in the first half. I thought he tired in the second.
Clough - 7 Some excellent breaks. According to the radio, he dived for the penalty.
Danns - 5 Unprofessional. He really put us up against it with his sending-off. There was no need for it at all.
Gudjohnsen - 6 He is not a goal-scorer is he? Wide swing in the first half and terrible miss in the second but he still oozes class with the ball at his feet.
Mills - 6 Worked really hard and gave Skrtl some difficult challenges.
Trotter - 4 Sorry but he cost us the game with lazy, slow defending.
Manager - 6 In hindsight, he should have subbed Danns. You could see a red card coming. Dealt a bad hand with all the injuries, he tactically played it well.

Feeling of anti- climax the day after but relief that players didn't have to endure extra time when we would surely have conceded two or three more.
I do wonder if maybe McNaughton could have offered twenty minutes. But can see why NL tried to hang on. Had Spearing not moved on that could have been set up for him. But with Danns off key and then despatched we just didn't have enough in midfield to make it through. Overall though what a difference since NL and a full crowd for a home cup game Brilliant

The serious problem we have now and it is serious, is that Neil Lennons name is being linked with Hull and Newcastle
Eddie Davies needs to dig deep into his reserves and go all out to commit NL to a long term deal He will be our best singing of the decade as all us supporters have warmed to his management style, reminiscent to the warmth we threw at Bruce Colin and Sam. We must keep hold of Neil Lennon, we are on the cusp of a new dawn and a brighter future. The alternative is to swap and change with the next 2 or 3 Doug Freedman type managers over the next few years, culminating in massive salaries and extortionate compensation packages for when we sack them, so it's a typical no brainier to keep hold of what we've got now Speculate to accumulate

Does anyone know what sort of contract Neil Lennon is on now? We have made money from the cup so spend it on a strong contract for the management team.

I think NL has more sense than to go for Newcastle or Hull. The first for obvious reasons - although he may fancy a Villa St. James's Park like the one Sam bought with his compensation. The second because they are likely to be a yo-yo team for a long while: he can get that with Bolton. What concerns me is that someone at Villa picks up what he has done to revitalise our players. They have a good squad underperforming badly. We all appreciate that we will one day lose NL to a middle to top Premiership side. Under Neil Villa could become such a team without spending megabucks.

I think you may be over exaggerating the money, on my receipt for my ticket £19.50 and my lad £26., £7.50 was VAT, so its not all going to the club. It used to be
1/3 to the away team, 1/3 to the home team and 1/3 to the FA., ( don't know whether it still is ) then the TV revenue split between the two clubs.
Hope you are right all the same.

Trotter, I don't know if you were quoting a figure for both matches, but if only for the replay if 21000 had attended and they had all £26 (which of course they didn't) we would have taken £546,000 in ticket receipts if we then have to pay over the VAT on those tickets it would leave us with £436,800 and if it's split the way Phil has suggested, our cut of that would be £145,600. Then of course there will be on costs to subtract from that, to pay the stewards etc, and on the plus side profits from merchandise eg programmes ,pies, beer etc. No idea how much our cut of the TV rights would be, but I can't see our total take being anywhere near £1m.
