No doubt mtid could document our season statistically in far greater depth and maybe he will? But it is a time of retrospection and maybe a thread could gather some reflections if anyone can bear to look back at some of the stadium emptying dross with which we have had to contend until recently.
In 2013/4 Jan to May we won 8 league games, drew 9 and lost 6 .
In 2014/5 Aug-Dec we won 8 drew 5 and lost 11
To make better comparison maybe we would have to compare the same periods mcuh as with utility bills? But at present our statistical form under NL has been similar to that under DF in the second half of last season. We are now winning more home games but arguably we were doing at least as well in away games under the previous regime last year?
But it all collapsed in the early part of this. We got demoralised. Games were being lost without fight and the stadium was emptying. Had i contractred ebola or leprosy I would have secured more company in the N Upper near my seat.
And what a relief when NL came! What a capture? The nearest comparisons came when the hated OC was replaced by DF and indeed when the reviled Megson was replaced by OC- at least in the expectations and even early results of both?
The background to all of this has been a major reconstruction of finances and a period of austerity which DF had to manage much more so than his predecessors who spent away merrily. But now we are within the FFP guidlelines and looking forward to NL having more to spend, maybe. We may even be about to move up the table and improve on the above statistics and others which could be advanced.
Twice DF had loaned players who made a significant difference. In 2014 Spring it was Jutkiewicz now a Burnley reserve. It was also Mason now a crock returning to the Taff. In 2013 the window highlight had been Sordell, now a Burnley reserve. In his last season DF loaned the above plus Feeney, Danns and Trotter. He followed up this with the return of Mason and McNaughton and the memorable penalty taking Garvan. I was there to see that and I also can remember what I was doing when JFK was assassinated! DF had splashed what was to be the entire transfer kitty on Spearing. NL has recruited Eidur and Emile from the knackers' yard, polished them up and reminded us that class is permanent- maybe. Spearing has reminded us that spirit is commendable but average ability may be persistent in its effects. He also in his ball watching reminds us that there is no substitute for intelligence his reputation for which took a dip as did he in mid season jacuzzi.
On here some posters not least whitessince63 and Joanna kept up a constant invective against DF and their philippics were eventually persuasive. In the eyes of most they were proved right. Moderates who perhaps included myself, kazooki and Spanishjonny were overcome as DF for me at Fulham took his post beyond any sort of tenability. Meanwhile. Joanna has taken down her posters, signed photographs and all the paraphernalia of her shrine to Jussi and built one to Andy Lonergan who at least has the most splendid initials. Bogdan is not her idol- I think we can say. Not even Catherine Tate could rehabilitate this ginger in her eyes?
David M has happily returned to match reporting and In both our absences Joanna stepped in at Reading and others have joined in from time to time. It's good to have different perspectives.
The fantasy league speeds on , thanks rtf, and I am 100 pts ahead of mtid- wasn't this inevitable after his summer volley?albeit trailing behind most others. But he does keep this whole forum statistically honest. 2014 of course saw the collapse of the BN forum and thanks to rtf we have been able to transfer to here although some important posters of that era eg Gareth, Sheikh Yerbouti ajb,and Jon W have not transferred or at least not written anything. Julie popped up briefly. Wotsupnow came in disguise. BWFC-til-I die is seemingly lying low and nurturing his capitals.
All in all not a great year on the field perhaps and too many disappointments but fun on here! I manged to get to all the home games save Bournemouth this year and have tried to get to Midlands and London. Away trips can be good fun despite the losses. I saw very few away wins in 2014. I think Birmingham this year was it! But most trips are enjoyable when I can sit and watch the game. This means venturing afar alas. Trips to Norwich, Charlton twice, QPR, Wolves and Fulham were the highlights not least because of the occasional good company of pedro and the kraken whom I met through this forum's predecessor and the various other regular travellers I have met
Happy New Year, one and all
