""Channel 5 are expected to be awarded the rights to show highlights to the Football League after promising to put them in a primetime slot.
The BBC currently shows Football League highlights very late at night on a Saturday after Match of the Day.
But it was reported on Sunday night that Channel 5 will gain the rights from next season and show them at 9pm on a Saturday.
The channel are expected to announce a three-year deal for all their divisions plus the Capital One Cup.
The news comes soon after it was revealed that the BBC could lose the right to show Premier League highlights for the first time since 2004. It emerged last month that ITV was preparing to bid for them.
Match of the Day, currently celebrating its 50th anniversary, held on to the rights during the last auction two years ago.
But, having lost live Champions League and Europa League football from next season and the FA Cup from August, ITV has plenty of surplus sports budget to lodge a serious bid when the latest Premier League tender process begins early next year.
That will cover the 2016-19 seasons, with the package widely tipped to generate more than the £180 million the BBC paid for the existing three-year contract.
ITV last held the rights between 2001 and 2004, showcasing them in a programme called The Premiership, which was fronted by Des Lynam after he was also poached from Match of the Day.
If ITV won those rights, the BBC could potentially be left with only the FA Cup and international tournaments to show.""
