Couldn't get to the match as the wife had accepted a dinner invitation for tonight. Having seen the team selection I don't think I'll be missing much so filling in some time.
Lion of Vienna Suite is carrying a rumour that we about to change kit supplier to Macron. If true, it must go hand in hand with a change of ground name as surely Macron would not be the kit supplier if (Addidas) Reebok retained the ground naming rights.
Leaving aside that the Addidas naming rights may not have expired yet, the the big question is: What will / should the (new) ground name be? N.B. I do not support all the names below, they are just given as examples to stimulate debate.
a) Will we follow Wigan and have The ED (as in Eddie Davies)? Might be a relatively short term name as ED may sell his interests to someone else.
b) Stay with the same kit manufacturer theme and have:The (Big) Mac (or other derivative) as in Macron? Another potentially short term deal.
c) Name the ground after Nat: The Nat Lofthouse, Nat Lofthouse Memorial Stadium, Lion of Vienna Stadium or just Lions Stadium. Better long term bet as we are unlikely to have such a playing icon for quite some time. Could generate some cash by renaming the Lofty stand.
d) Go the Sunderland way and steal an iconic name from somewhere else. The Bolton Bernabeu, The (Red) Rose Bowl (several teams), Parc des Roi de Football (pardon my French after Parc des Princes), Stade des Pennines (after Stades des Alpes). Potentially long term but acks local ties.
e) Name after some item of historic interest in Bolton: The Worktown Factory (look up Worktown for those who do not know), Camp Red Moss, Red Moss Camp, Gartside Good Riddance Ground (but why perpetuate such an unpopular person), Western Pennines Ground, Route One Field, Gartside Gone for Good Ground (or the 4G). Potential but would not recommend any of my suggested list. Rivington View Stadium,
Any thoughts or suggestions?
It would be nice to think that we would be consulted but its unlikely in my view as some form of commercial interest would be the final decider. That's not to rule out something like The Axa Nat Lofthouse Memorial Stadium, or ASONS Lion of Vienna Stadium though.
