I didn’t see the game yesterday, didn’t listen to or read updates, just spent a lovely afternoon in the garden with my 7 year old granddaughter and waited for the inevitable result I was expecting. I wasn’t in the least surprised, I had always expected a defeat and the manner in which it was achieved but four conceded was even worse than I imagined. This can’t go on surely, we’re going backwards so quickly now and whilst I still don’t believe we’re in a relegation fight, I haven’t given up on at least the play offs as long as decisions are made now. After his latest outburst I think it’s pretty clear Evatt’s struggling and needs to go for his own mental strength as much as anything. Who we bring in is a dilemma because it needs to be done quickly before the season is lost and whether it’s a temporary fix like Sam or Brownie or a permanent replacement it has to be done quickly. All is not lost, the seasons a marathon not a sprint and indeed with our squad I believe we could turn around very quickly under the right man so come on Sharon, get on with it pdq.

some unhinged stuff from Burnden aces twitter pre-match yesterday. full on Evatt backing. even saying when he said " best team in the lge "... nothing was incorrect in the statement. you what don't know if there was a typo in that, as the whole sentence didn't seem to read right to me. they did change by the end of the game. they fascinate me these types, they'll never blame the regime for sacking a manager, they just do a king is dead, long live the king stance. if you believe in him so strongly pre-match , how do you fold so quickly and cave into peer pressure. fall into line. pathetic. x.com/BurndenAces/status/1834915471532958146unfortunately the tweets don't embed now it's called x.com , but links to tweets should work. they were even defending his highest win % quotes pre-match as "facts" x.com/BurndenAces/status/1834904626736283861irrelevance. i must have shot this down about 3 years ago , when i compared to Newcastle managers in the ch'ship. good to see several good tweets shoot it down in similar fashion. x.com/RyanCee442/status/18348615478200567462We’ve spent most of our time as a club in the top two divisions. I thought I'd wait awhile until back home in an attempt to get a bit of perspective. It's ever so easy to slip into negativity and to get things upside down or inaccurate when trying to balance emotion and reason in the immediate aftermath of a game, especially one like yesterday. I have read the Marc Iles' verdict and had a look at the highlights on You Tube. Clearly IE confronted was in post match despair, as well he might be. The 4th goal seemed almost to epitomise what should be Armageddon for the pass it out from the back libertines. Baxter's error yesterday, which he also rehearsed a few minutes earlier, in many eras would have ended his career and such a shame after an outstanding eye-catching save from a close range header. Is such an error Evatt's fault. I'm not sure it is. It was a crass mistake born of confusion, desperation, bemusement and from a keeper who is poor with his feet. If playing football is pre-requisite of a keeper to my mind Southwood trumps Baxter.
Also, the first forty minutes or so of the game were very even. I thought Huddersfield looked a bit more fluent but there wasn't much in it. Charles had almost won a key scramble, we had got to the bye line a couple of times, Matete had a couple of flamboyant runs ( more of this later) and apart from a couple of Santos errors, one of which he redeemed by prostrating himself in front of a shot and 'blocking' it in most ungainly fashion after he had lost his man. we were unthreatened.. Forini had galloped back and made a strong challenge to dispossess a forward who had wrongsided him. Worryingly though, he was then bent over trying to recover breath as were several others. But then if you take a passably impressive centre half like Forini ( and I really think he is both aerially and on the ground) and ask him to charge up and down like a wing back it's asking for trouble.
Anyway then came a game- changing interlude. An injury to a Huddersfield player led to one of these stupid timeouts where most of our team ambled to the sideline for a few pearls from the manager. Complete disaster. All sharpness was lost and within moments Huddersfield were ahead. At the time Santos error was very obvious. He could have kicked it, dived to head it and was ahead of the scorer. In the event he did neither with Baxter dithering behind and they scored the simplest of goals. Watching back Dacres- Cogley was way too slow to close down a player as was Forini another and the cross caught Santos and Baxter by surprise. It was all caused by loss of concentration at the timeout. One of these days I'd love to see a ref restart a game with 10 or more players at the sideline.
Once the goal is conceded watch Santos. Far from leading and rallying the troops, he stands bemused and lummoxing facing the crowd, no doubt turning over his shame, culpability and responsibility all at a pace only a snail could match. Awful. Should not be captain. I don't know how much better a central pairing of two of Johnston, Forini and Toal would be but it must be better than Santos, who also missed a really good opportunity from an earlier corner.
I said at half time that I feared a four nil defeat and so it was.
I do though depart from Marc Iles' player analysis somewhat and from some on here. I thought Matete was for the fourth time running absolutely awful. Yes he sprints forwards and flicks off some one touches but he habitually passes square, has given at at four breakaways to opponents, two yesterday and his 'work' out of possession is verging on the non-existent, save for the odd foot in. He was all over the place. Poor Thomason, Poor Dempsey. They huffed and puffed but we neither had two defensive midfielders nor a man to man marking regime. Huddersfield were wandering through and round at will.
And then the penalty? Where has the old Evatt gone? I do not like his touchline outbursts or his referee rants but no way was this a penalty. Forini and hos opponent tangled legs and brought each other down. 50:50. Its award should have kick started rage and retribution. But no, Baxter makes a flimsy dive before the ball is kicked ( had he saved would have been retaken) and 2-0. Not necessarily game over but on current confidence levels as good as.
I do think actually we played a bit better from then on. Schon got foward promisingly a couple of times, Adeboyejo had a bit of impact throughout the second half and Collins managed one or two quick interchanges. Schon had one good shooting chance but on his wrong foot and missed the opportunity.
Meanwhile the midfield horror show got worse. We had about six or seven chances to clear the 3rd goal, both Matete and Thomason failed to do so and some others as well. The eventual shot was reached by Baxter and should have been saved at least to the point of a follow up but his positioning and the shambles in front eroded all hope of clearance
And then the coup de grace. I felt sorry for Sheehan. He had actually added a bit of overdue zip to midfield at both ends and put under pressure by Schon passed to Baxter who for some reason tried to find Matete in one of his hiding places and ended up gifting a goal. Rtf, you should now retire the passing from the back thread! it's a tactic that has cost so many teams so many goals for precious little in return and I think Baxter has had the last word as far as BWFC go. I think passing to an opponent just outside his goal box is about as bad as it could ever get short of kicking it into his own goal, This is not playing from the back. It's just rank bad and totally inappopriate passing.
So, off they all trooped to cascade of boos. But this sets up another myth that the crowd are somehow exuding a cloud of negativity on to the players. Er, no. 20,000 plus turned d up!!!!
For further comment I'd cross refer to my parallel thread of last week and indeed some others and all rtf's stats and references. The team are not suddenly that far below Huddersfield in quality. Little tweaks would greatly help. Yes, we miss Jones for Plan A and without him Dacres-Cogley is lost. Asking Forino to do what Jones does is ludicrous. Yes, we lost Maghoma and idiotically let Morley go leaving us chronically shorthanded in midfield a problem compounded by having too much resource in wasted positions upfront. In truth Evatt has never managed to find a niche for the talented Collins-- maybe had we sold Charles as we nearly did last January we would have figured out a way or maybe the same re Adeboyejo who does some good things but not enough. Unless he has a bionic arm or broken wrist it's about time he took off that white wrist bandage. It identifies him too readily and must be there as a sort of comfort blanket. Send the wrong signal?
I'm afraid that too much is being asked of Thomason, a bit part player two years ago and now under such pressure of responsibility as pretty much the only midfield player tackling, when he should be more upfield and threading passes to forward runners. One attempt yesterday just awful but it is his strength. He could really find and feed Collins. Again Morley could have been really useful, aside of other qualities he could pass a ball near and far. Who else can?
I don't know that Evatt's departure would lead to immediate progress, maybe a bounce if as I suspect there is disgruntlement in the camp ( who was playing for him yesterday?) but we do need a leader to stand up to him if needs be but also the rest of the team when they are as abject as yesterday. That man is not Santos. Arfield maybe ( he impressed me yesterday?) Forini maybe- he looks like a leader but isn't yet established. McAtee maybe but ditto. Or maybe as per parallel thread we just need Jones back-- he is all to easily under-rated. Bottom line though is that IE if staying must grow some and drop Santos because in his current position he is a complete liability at both ends of the field and via his body language and Methuselan gait.
Baxter 4 ( needs a a break) Forini 6 ( needs to be in a back four centrally) Toal 5 ( ditto, ) Schon 6 (must get him upfield- some good work yesterday) Santos 4 (poor) Thomason 5 Matete 3 flatters to deceive, should never have started ahead of Sheehan) Collins 4 Charles 4 Dempsey 4 ( couldn't get going, needs to be fed), Dacres-Cogley 1 ( is Mathieson really worse, what on earth has happened to him?) Subs Adeboyejo 6 Sheehan 5 Arfield 5

good post Andy. we were right last week about Baxter's poor form. i noticed that too, on the pen, seemed to make it a touch too easy. head scrambled. maybe trying too hard ? . 4-0 sounds awful and was awful..but only 5 shots on target from them. the poor saves ratio continues. even after the disaster with the 4th, he almost seemed to throw himself down too quickly instead of doing the ol' Schmeichel-esque star-jump spreading yourself BIG . maybe i'm being too hypercritical there. hadn't even commented on Santos. everyday Santos mistakes. loses his man for the 1st when he actually had him. then with the 3rd...calamity from loads obviously, but he actually gets a good mini block in..ball flirts up, and he misses his header. Agent mcGee on X last night making out like Evatt had gone. x.com/AgentMcGee1874seemed reliable a while back, with lots of insider knowledge. i don't follow him. but recently got a big one wrong saying Paris was coming back. though he hasn't had quite the usual box of transfer goodies Evatt's been privileged to get previous seasons. i really expected a big name to exit to balance the books a bit..maybe Dion etc. maybe that's why there's a bit of upset in the camp. very quick to drag Dion off etc. the accounts are going to be very interesting next time, feels like we keep gambling to get up, betting a bit more than we should...but like those latter days under PG/ED. i remember last season....was it Neil Hart saying Collins was brought into ensure promotion that season. i'm sure it was phrased as like bringing forward a signing that would have happened after promotion, but seemed sensible to do it before to ensure it does. etc. (edit - found the link now..).. RISK WORTH TAKING.... reduce risk of finishing lower than 2nd www.theboltonnews.co.uk/sport/24103532.bolton-wanderers-ceo-neil-hart-big-aaron-collins-signing/is Hart's departure something to do with this, or just to take another big salary off ? good retweet by Lion of Vienna suite. not looked at them for ages, but wondering what their take was. stumbled across this : never heard of this Callum Fowler. impressive guy. at first you think..is he BWFC fan. wrong accent ? . actually a Barnsley fan. for a neutral general EFL fan to nail it so thoroughly in just a vid of less than 2 mins , and make it quite humourous too. crams so much in 2 mins. love the Russell Martin reference..lol. x.com/CMerrills22/status/1835335144854397279

first on the play list for the pre-match Ent, that's for those who can be bothered to turn up. very rare for me to miss one if not ill or injured etc. luckily one of those applied to the last shambolic game. fit and ready for the next one...but it'll be a no from me.

a couple more songs for the pre-match Ent play list on sat'day. thought of this while watching the (bbc) Pointless final today. the question was....name a song that's made the top 10 with either " now" or "again" in the title My other half thought of "Go now" but we couldn't remember who it was by. we joked it was a good addition for sat'days playlist in the stadium. Don't stop me now ( by Queen) was another one. suggested by the contestants... that is certainly NOT one for the evatt playlist . this next one also quite apt, considering the scapegoating of Craddock.
