interesting caller in the post-match phone in on Bolton fm. www.boltonfm.com/listen-again/?Day=6&Hours=17&id=5276&Date=2024-02-17listen quick before it gets pulled. approx 11.25 into the playable clip thing on the right side. caller said he was in the tunnel vs Lincoln last year, chatting to a mate. Evatt just happened to walk past , while the caller was saying how poor the performance had been and overheard this. loads of 'effin & jeffin from Evatt, apparently and season ticket holder for 50 odd years is told to "go & support another team then " Charming. what is he getting involved with this stuff for anyway. can't be good for his mental health. just turn the other cheek. like OM has said yonks back, if he expects to go higher.. eg PL how does he think he won't face more intense scrutiny. we go back to the pundits getting chopped in Lge 2 on Ifollow for not towing the party line enough. if you just want cheerleaders in, lets fan in for free. the minute they start paying over their hard-earned and start paying to get in, which helps pay the managers wages, they're entitled to their view. that caller is on regularly and he's not Anti-evatt, but he'll call it as he sees it. play well.. he'll praise it. play bad, and he's not too happy. but he certainly doesn't go o.t.t. on Bolton fm you wouldn't get on , if you did !

Charlton scored a most ridiculous goal. Their man out on the left curled a centre in. Jones missed it, Toal missed it and it just curled straight into the net. I think it was Jones who should have cleared it but Toal and Coleman were like statues as it curled in. A comical goal. Correction to this. After seeing the highlights, it was Toal who should have headed it clear. A really bad piece of defending

Having watched the highlights on goal 1 . Toal could make a first aerial challenge but backs off. Dacres- Cogley is gong through the motions too far off his man and is too easily turned. Toal misjudges it in the air Coleman just sits and waits. Iredale let's his man go for the vital distraction. It was a collective set of errors
Iredale is to slow on goal 3. Adeboyejo fails to stop the shot on goal 2. All were preventable
They will have a similar inquest on our goals 1 and 3. Maghoma's was individually brilliant.
If Santos and Forrester are fit, even Taylor it looks to me as if Toal and Iredale are running on empty? Coleman was just too hesitant with everything and doesn't use his feet to make saves- a real problem - as I thought at fault on every goal technically.

We surely just can’t keep giving chances like those yesterday and similar in recent games where we’ve got away with it if we seriously want to make the top two. We used to have such a strong defence, even when Santos was missing but recently we seem anything but secure. I don’t like all this criticism of Coleman though, he’s been thrown in behind a totally dysfunctional defence and even Baxter would have struggled. People seem to ignore that he’s actually kept us in recent games including with a late save yesterday so let’s share the blame shall we.
Having said all that, I don’t think Coleman’s the best exponent of playing out from the back and is yet another example of Evatt trying to make a player fit a system rather than fitting the system to the players. I can see the same happening to Collins and though it was said as a joke when he made that cross for Ashworth to score it may well be that Evatt squeezes the individuality out of him through over coaching. There’s no doubt in my mind that we have the players to beat anybody in this league so why is it that they are underperforming so badly so regularly? In my mind they’re so over thinking the system that they’re ignoring their natural instincts. I think that’s what Evatt’s getting at when he insists that only one system will exist rather than prepare for a play B or C? The players seem terrified of doing something that goes against it even if it makes sense.
When we play quickly with high tempo as we did yesterday after the break we are a different team. Nobody has a problem with playing out from the back instead of a hoof upfield but it must be effected quickly in my opinion. This let’s tire the opposition out bollocks is for the birds, we’re the ones it send to sleep not the opposition. Obviously though that’s not how Evatt sees it so on that basis there’s not much chance of it changing but if it doesn’t I fear we’re going to miss out. Add to that the ridiculous (in my opinion) 70 minute substitutions of our best players because they’re bloody tired and we’re just compounding the problem. I don’t want Evatt to go but I do want him to see what’s in front of him and wake up to it that he may after all just be the one who’s wrong?

No more needs to be said W63 than this comment of yours
“In my mind they’re so over thinking the system that they’re ignoring their natural instincts”
As a kid, when a ball is thrown at you, instinct is simple = ball in the net… why over complicate this simple rule?
We play like walking through a maze when there’s a clear path already been made

I wonder do teams raise there game when they play us or do we just tend to think we just have to turn up and win games. I don't know we have for as long as I can remember when a team is on a bad run we seem to play well below our standards and give teams a leg up. Ohh I listened to the caller and it seems as if it's all around the club that if you say anything against Ian or the players the first thing they say is go and support another club what the fxck is that all about.

As fans chip we have every right to comment on what we see. You and I aren’t professionals but we’ve been watching football for so many years, have seen what works and what doesn’t and can tell whether what we’re doing or not is right so if we want to comment on it we are perfectly entitled to do so. I know we get the usual armchair fan comment or go and support another club jibe but that’s irrelevant to me, I’ll say what I see. I’m very much in the Evatt camp but that doesn’t mean I think everything he does is right, it certainly isn’t but I accept that he has a method and intends to apply it. We all learn more from our mistakes than we do from success and hopefully as a still young and inexperienced manager Ian will learn to adapt his system over time. There’s no denying the improvements made since he’s been here and despite Saturday top two is still in our hands. If we don’t make it then there’s questions to be asked but let’s be honest, we're missing some key players at the moment yet we’re still clawing results. We need to win on Tuesday now after Saturday but I’m confident we will then there’s a series of 6 pointer games which will decide our fate for top two. Even if we don’t make that I believe we’ll win any play offs so I’m still hugely confident we’ll be in the Championship next year.

I wonder do teams raise there game when they play us Certainly in L2 that was the case but in L1 there are Derbys, Portsmouth, Blackpool, etc. Charlton certainly won't think that were miles bigger(right or not) I do think it's a case where we feel we don't need to match them for spirit that we can outclass them. I think sometimes we have a superiority complex. Well its not even that because I don't mind us being confident, arrogant and having that mentality. I think we think we don't have to graft and battle because we're better players. And sometimes that's proven to be correct but sometimes not. From now on we need to start games. More tempo, more urgency and aggression. (I was saying the same thing 3 years ago) I do question how much Evatt has learnt and wants to learn. I think he said he played with or if friends with Rob Edwards. I hope he can reflect that from similar backgrounds one is now impressing in the premier league and one is groundhog day in League 1.

There does seem to be a lot of comment, wherever you look, about this slow start/approach to games that’s left us all feeling a little deflated and also playing catch up.
When you look at the managers that seem to be doing it, they’ve all managed to turn it around.
Mousinho turned a few horrid games into a positive, Paul Warne has certainly had his share of bad results so far but even he has also turned it around, do I expect Evatt to turn around our fortunes? I do, but I also feel it’ll be accidental.
We have a very decent squad of players, yes we have injuries, like all do, but we’ve still got a healthy squad without those injured and I think they are very capable of winning the games in hand and climbing to the summit.
But…
Somethings still bugging about the way we set up and start games that’s leaving us all scratching our heads.
As per RTF’s thread about ‘passing it out from the back’ there’s enough horror shows on there to suggest that even if your Man City, you’ll still never win over fans with this ‘hospital’ football.
We’ve all seen Rico and now even Toal putting foot on the ball and waiting, and waiting and waiting some more!! Whatever happen to the cavalier spirit of the Leyton Orient game at home??? It works Ian, it really does
So can we not play with freedom and expression and start on the front foot??
I know he’s only been here since Jan 31st but just like Adeboyejo, we all saw the Burton goals he scored and with Collins, we saw his acrobatics after scoring, plus his assists, yes, these are exciting prospects, but they’re somehow not showing it, so is that their fault or is it the system we play thats nullifying their talents?? Same for Dion, Stoke once rumoured to be in with a bid for him at one point, as crap as they are now, they’ve probably thought they had dodged a bullet with that one!! Again, has Evatt’s system took the freedom to shoot out of his game
I don’t know what the full reasons are for this slow possession game but it’s boring, just like Neville says about City.
I’m not at all confident about the Cambridge game, yes, we’ll score I’m sure but by eck, we’ll not keep a clean sheet
Wish I could be glass half full I really do

I think we’re all feeling a bit down and frustrated after our last few games rioch and like you I’m wondering if or when we’ll turn it around. There’s no doubting that we have one of the best and deepest squads in L1 but equally we rely on a handful of them and sadly that handful of Rico, Baxter, Dion, and George are all missing. That’s a big blow yet we’ve managed to come through without losing so that must at least be a positive? Hopefully all but Baxter will return over the next week for the Blackpool game so it should make a massive difference.
On the slow build up, as you say it can be boring if it’s done slowly as it has been recently but it can also be exciting if done at pace. Like you I don’t know whether the slowness is Evatt instructed or just the players doing it themselves. Certainly Coleman seems ridiculously slow at getting moves going and I don’t know whether that’s players not moving for him or just his own over caution. Either way it’s happening and I don’t expect Rico to speed it up much when he gets back in but hopefully his distribution and long passing out will be better than the recent awful mistakes being made. Tough game tomorrow but one it’s even more important to win after Saturday so we can put some pressure on the top two.
