That was a high quality performance against a very good Wednesday and once we scored we were by far the better team. It’s a shame we missed that penalty against Ipswich because I think the same thing could have happened there and we could have taken at least a point. I thought Sheehan, Santos and z Trafford were outstanding tonight and though we played it out from the back we actually moved the ball quicker and it showed. So that extra point could make all the difference at the end of the season but let’s just hope Barnsley keep their good run going against Wycombe tomorrow and put us back in the box seat?

In the end a really good point.
We had a good first 5 minutes when we passed the ball well and then suffered a torrid 30 minutes when we couldn’t get anything right.
Trafford made a marvellous save from a shot after a long throw in and then did well to turn a long range shot round the post.
At this stage, defensively we had given up marking.
All the defenders stood 5 yards off the opposition and they had endless chances until Santos was beaten in the air for a knock down and Jones just did not mark the goalscorer.
At this stage it looked like it could get away from us and we had to defend desperately. Santos made a couple of excellent blocks and we somehow kept Wednesday out.
And them we slowly worked our way back into the game and when Bradley and Jones combined down the right, Adeboyejo shot, got a deflection and we were level.
So half time and 1-1. Ridiculously we had had 60% possession in the 1st half but they had 8 shots, 5 on target whilst we had 2/1.
Second half we controlled things very well. Wednesday had a few attacks and had one bad miss when they shot over from the edge of the box. We didn’t really have much until Toal sent Charles away with a tremendous long pass. Charles seemed to be caught on his back leg and went down but tonight’s ref was in no mood to give Charles anything.
We played the game out well and deservedly got a good point to stop the rot.
Marks:-
Trafford - 9 Great save in the first 5 mins, followed by another decent one soon after. Caught the ball well and played the ball out with some speed. He would have saved their goal but for a deflection.
Bradley - 7 Busy throughout. A few passes went astray but he threatened throughout
Jones - 7 No marking for their goal. Good run and pass for the equaliser.
Santos - 8 Question mark over his lack of a defensive header for their goal but put in numerous blocks and some good diagonal passes.
Toal - 7 Solid with some decent passes with his left foot.
John - 8 Some really good breaks down the left.
Sheehan - 7 Decent performance with some quality control.
Dempsey - 6 Somewhat lost in midfield. Struggled to get in the game.
Lee - 6 Subdued a bit tonight. Some neat touches but no domination.
Charles - 6 Got nothing off the ref. His tangles with Flint got him nowhere and could (should?) have had a penalty.
Adeboyejo - 7 Made some decent runs in the 1st half. Took his chance aided by a deflection.
Shoretire - 6 Didn’t take his chance against a tiring Wednesday defence
Jerome - 7 Showed a few nice touches.

Was not expecting that from our recent performances. Best we've played for a few weeks. Evatt tried to explain what the passing around at the back was supposed to achieve after it went badly wrong against Ipswich. It came off tonight but I don't know why. SW didn't press as aggressively as Ipswich so we seemed to have a lot more time and composure. Great result, well done boys. (Don't know where you get an 8 for John? He frustrates me always passes backwards and never takes on and goes past defenders. Only a 6 for me. )

A lot of our attack balance comes from John, and he was very active in the early stages. When you get to the by-line as he frequently does it sometime helps to pass back. Defensively the team is structured around the pass-back. For myself I was happy to be proved wrong about Toal playing on the left. He had a fine game after a slow start and his penetrative pass to Charles which brought about the non-penalty incident was masterful. The other plus for me, apart from the outstanding Santos, was the form of Sheehan, now seeming to be stronger after that dreadful injury.

John comes to life when he's in the final third, but that's only when we are on top of teams. I'd like to see him take on a defender and push the opposition backwards. The backpasses I'm talking about are the passes he receives in our half. Very rarely looks forward and then passes it back. I'll support any player in a wanderers shirt but John doesn't look interested in being here. It may be his character but I bet he's hard work at a party. 😃😃

Sparky, you are right to opine that John may be a controversial character. For instance Parkinson had him on loan at Sunderland, but never used him. The way I look at his performances is that when he isn't in our team, we are not as effective in attacking down the left. In fact most of our best wins have been with him in the team, when he has created a lot in the opposition half. Like all our players, and in the words of Evatt, they are there to receive the benefits of his coaching and training, and whatever weaknesses John has maybe Evatt is working on them, and those would appear to be defensive. I think all our defenders, save for Santos, do a lot of back-passing on the instructions of our coach, and some in my opinion concede too many throws and corners,. but John does not seem to be more of a culprit in that respect than any other. In terms of alternatives to John I have hopes for Williams, but many on here do not agree about the former Hull player.

I think we have to make up our minds what we want with a wing back. Is he primarily a defender with decent attacking ability or a winger with adequate defensive capabilities? You can very rarely expect both, certainly at our level. I accept that John isn’t the best left full back defensively but for me he more than makes up for that going forward and at league one level I’d say he’s every bit as good as most. Surely when he gets forward it’s for the other defenders to cover for him otherwise we become exposed which I don’t see as Johns fault. I’m definitely in the Declan John fan club and from what I’ve seen of Williams so far wouldn’t put him in the same league as DJ but obviously time will tell. Whatever we think Evatt from what he says clearly doesn’t entirely trust DJ and it would be a surprise if he’s still here next season wherever we finish. I wouldn’t want either Williams or Iredale replacing him if I’m honest and I don’t think Max Conway, who seems to be highly rated, will be anywhere near ready for the first team so it looks like we’ll need to bring a replacement in. I don’t expect it to be Williams permanently so I think he’ll probably be away in the summer too when his contracts up. Until our league position is settled though, I don’t think many of the out of contract players will be re signed and if we do go up I suspect pretty much all of them will be replaced, with the possible deception of a Kieran Lee who may do another year?

Fair play to Plymouth too another win to take them top. No final hangover like us.
Assumed that when we play our next match we would be out of the play offs, with a game in hand. Not sure now. Posh and Wymcombe are 4 points behind with 2 games. Wycombe go to Charlton and host MKDons. They need to win both to go above us. 4 pts should keep us above them on GD.
Posh have Derby at home. Which is almost a win win for us. If they beat Derby then we actually go level on GD at very least. Win by two and ours is better and without kicking a ball we climb above Derby. Who then play Ipswich. If Posh fail to beat Derby then it's hard for them to overtake us before Easter.
There is a scenario where the below clubs get good wins and Derby get something from Ipswich and we go behind them all but think we will still be in the playoffs at kick off on Good Friday. Crucial we beat Exeter. Going to be a crucial Easter.

Crucial we beat Plymouth or we could implode I thought that OooM, that draw at SW gave us at the very least, a one point cushion which could be invaluable, provided we don’t fluff our lines Tough to take that Barnsley slammed SW for 4 and with ease I have to say, whereas we had to rely on a deflected shot for our goal from Vic. Could be a regret that we didn’t go for Wednesday from the off, but that would be against the Evatt Rule

You mentioned that Derby result OooM, well it happened and we’ve climbed the table without kicking a ball Shame Port Vale and Charlton couldn’t hang on but better draws than wins for Pompey and Wycombe Hope those results inadvertently give our lads a lift, not just for the Pizza Cup but back in the league. Have to give Exeter a mention as they’ll be going into the game against us on a bit of a high after thumping AccyStan 5-0 today
