What an excellent result.
Not a great performance but a deserved win against a ridiculously over physical Peterborough side.
They set out to waste time and to knock our players about but we stood up to that. Battling their physical stuff stopped us playing our passing game and the 1st was pretty poor.
The first 15 minutes was our usual sloppy, casual approach. We seem to need time to get going and we played poor pass after poor pass with the defence looking all over the show.
We got opened up on one occasion and were rescued by Trafford flying out of his area and making a wonderful tackle on Clarke Harris who realistically was clean through.
It took us 30 or so minutes to wake up but then for the last 15 minutes, we started to play and create.
Charles and Bradley combined brilliantly to set Bradley through but, with a one on one with the keeper, he sliced his shot over. A wonderful chance missed.
We then had a couple of corners and, from a scramble in the box, Jones was unlucky to see his header hit the post with the keeper beaten.
So 0-0 at half time – reasonably fair as we only started in the last 15 minutes.
2nd half we set off brilliantly.
Bradley set up Dempsey for a chance but he delayed and lost possession.
Another scramble in the box left Iredale with a great chance but somehow somebody blocked his shot – should have scored - and then Charles couldn’t get the ball under control with a half chance.
Peterborough had faded by this time – they were still kicking lumps out of us – but I was always worried that they snatch something on the break.
So the match went into the last 10 minutes with us in charge but we couldn’t open them up when Afolayan – who hadn’t started particularly well when coming on as sub – picked the ball up 30 yards out and moved forward. We all shouted Shoot – he did and got the luckiest deflection which took the ball into the opposite corner to the keeper’s dive.
And so we had 4 mins + injury time to see out the game. We did but should have scored in the final minute when we broke out of defence and had 3 onto 1. Somehow Bakayoko made an almighty mess of a simple pass to Bodvarsson who was clean through and the chance was gone.
But we held on OK and got a deserved but hard fought win.
How many bookings were there in that match? I counted Williams, Sadlier, Johnston, Iredale and maybe some more in the various rumpuses in the penalty area. The referee couldn’t control the niggles. Peterborough at vsrious stages dragged us into a fight but deservedly we got the points
Marks:-
Trafford - 7 Not much to do save-wise. He caught some high balls very well but made 2 amazingly good tackles outside the box when Peterborough looked through
Bradley - 8 As usual tremendous. How I wish he could keep his nerve and finish a one on one chance.
Jones - 6 Troubled by the pace of their left wing attack. Unlucky to hit the post
Santos - 6 Had a real difficult battle with Clarke Harris. Came out of it 50/50.
Johnston - 7 Didn’t have the physicality to cope with that Santos had and did well
Iredale - 6 Some poor passing and a miss at the start of the 2nd half
Williams - 7 A real battle. Didn’t stand for any nonsense from the opposition
Dempsey - 6 Took too long over a 2nd half chance. Battled well
Thomason - 7 Very busy and again some good powerful challenges
Kachunga - 6 Lots of running and pressing but with him on the pitch, we are desperately short up top. I hardly recall him getting into the box which for a striker (is he classed as a striker??) is poor
Charles - 6 Another one who fluffed his lines at the start of the 2nd half but he was so isolated it was a difficult match for him
Afolayan - 6 A couple of really bad passes when he first came on but he chose to shoot when the chance came (unlike the other forward players!) and got the luck
Bodvarsson - 6 Good to see him get on. A bit rusty but also a proper striker – giving us 2 up top
Sadlier - 6 Quite busy when he came on
Bakayoko

I do wonder when some posters on here go for 3-1 We’ve had 5 corners so far and been woeful on every one Get some front men on Evatt…Now please Well since I was the only one predicting 3-1 rioch, I presume you’re referring to me? 🥴 Yes, I’ve probably been a little over optimistic but with all the chances we’re creating we’ll surely start potting them some time? It’s another 3 points anyway and whilst we’re not scoring a lot at the moment, the footballs at least more positive and we’d probably have lost games like this last season. Evatt’s shape is working for the team generally but it’s definitely affecting the strikers negatively. At the moment we’re getting the results so probably the players not getting game time aren’t complaining too much but if results do fall off it wouldn’t surprise me to see a little unrest in the camp. We also have two recent defensive signings and players returning from injury who’ll want to be included which will also make things even more difficult for IE. However, not time to be negative so well done Whites and let’s keep it up.

Good evening just got home trains never get any better I got to my seat for 12 minutes gone and sometimes I wish I didn’t bother our build up is still slow we are very reluctant to put our laces through the ball, Peterborough were there for the taking and it took until 86 minutes before a shot took a wicked deflection to give us 3 points and that’s all I will say 3 points very lucky onwards and upwards COYWM

As a sideshow from most of the general flow Santos and his striker opponent were continually sparring. The fact that Santos won the fight against one of this league's leading scorers was a major factor in our winning a physical battle whose equal hasn't been seen here for a long time. With the Posh physicals controlled not surprisingly we created many openings, and such a pity they were not converted into goals. For me, though, the game proved to show what Ian Evatt has been promising, an ability to match physicality toe to toe, and every member of that team can hold their heads up high. As for the referee, I don't think he had ever experienced the physicality and roguery shown by Peterborough, and this led to some poor decisions, including a couple of unjust bookings against our players. Their number 17 committed two gross fouls in the first five minutes without a word of rebuke, and he was particularly lenient towards their numbers seven and eight throughout. Hopefully he will learn from the experience.

I think there were also those on the BN and also in other games wheee they predicted a 3-1 win. We only seem to get past 2 goals in that Pizza Trophy comp
