Bit unfair that Rioch, it was a cracking corner and I think Dixon was slightly impeded after pushing another Villa player off him. Good performance from both sides and our goal shows exactly how wrong Evatt was to leave Lee out against Wednesday on Saturday. We certainly haven’t been outplayed so far and have matched Villa in everything. This is a strong PL team we’re facing here and so far we’ve matched them well. We can win this if we stay confident but Villa do look dangerous with that forward line and our defence needs to stay awake because one slip and we’re in trouble. Agree with most of that Whites, but I felt the ref affected our press in the second half. His early booking of Johnston was really unjust and he then let their number 44, Kamara, commit serial fouls with ultimately only a late talking-to. Right out of the Mike Riley school of refereeing he also called lots of fouls against us for fair tackles, interrupting many moves, and I thought he and his colleagues missed offsides for both the penalty and one of the ensuing goals. It was a mixed night for Dixon. Often excellent he boobed on a couple of the goals, but was unfortunate that a trailing leg cost the penalty after Ings had run the ball out. Should it have been a pen ? Regarding Dapo.I think Ian Evatt should quietly put him back on the left wing and let him win his usual quota of fouls from there, while resuming his territorial links with whoever is playing left wing back. I was disappointed we didn't put out our strongest side, but we coped really well until losing some grip on the renewed Villa powers in the second half, and we could have conceded a couple more in the closing minutes.

Dixon did well until conceding from the corner. I thought his sweeping until that point was better than Trafford's. Ultimately, Trafford has no competition now unless we sign another keeper.
Dapo has found his level now - just an average L1 player. Shame.
Santos did indeed have a fine game and showed he could be capable of playing higher with a bit more development. Dempsey was disappointing, never seemed to get into the game.
We need a better striker than the ones we've got. Hopefully they are good enough to get us promoted, but I'm still to be convinced.

A good game with a harsh scoreline.
If VAR had been in place, or if linesmen could spot offences, Villa’s first 2 goals probably wouldn’t have counted.
We had an excellent 1st half and must have scared Villa but, really, you cannot concede direct from a corner. Villa’s “lucky” goal put them back in the game and they dominated the 2nd half and, but for some good saves from Dixon late on, we could have been seriously embarrassed.
Defensively, we were a mixed bunched. Dixon made some very good saves late on but he takes the blame for 3 of Villa’s goals. Our back 3 stood off Watkins and Ings too much although it might be that they are premiership players and know how to find space. We let them run through us hoping for offside and eventually paid the price for that.
Midfield, we harried well but then got overrun in the 2nd half.
Upfront, we pressed well and scared them
We started so well and pressed Villa really well. Our goal came from good play from Afolayan and Lee with Douglas Luiz diving for a “foul” when Dapo breathed on him.
We had them worried.
Santos made a good tackle on Coutinho to concede a corner. Unfortunately, Dixon got tangled up in bodies and let the corner go straight in. In 99% of games, the referee would have blown for a foul as everyone was pushing and shoving and Dixon was definitely impeded but he should be stronger.
That goal really changed the game and Villa were much better from then on.
Second half, Villa really took us apart and we rarely threatened. The midfield was overrun and there was space everywhere for Villa players.
Ings looked well offside when he got through the middle but he then pushed the ball too far past Dixon who stupidly stuck a leg out and brought him down for a penalty.
Our defence was then caught out down our right but Dixon somehow let a near post shot beat him for no 3.
Johnston then did the one thing I don’t like about him and backed off and backed off allowing a man to run from 30 yards out on the right right into the 6 yard box and then got beaten for a shot into the corner. I know Johnston was on a booking but to back off like that was suicidal – remember Cheltenham last season?
Overall, a good game – some fine play but we ran out of legs
Marks:-
Dixon - 5 Made some really good saves but at fault for goals 1, 2 & 3.
Bradley - 7 As usual, very busy. Second half. It was hard for him
Aimson - 6 He’s a central defender not a right sided one and was caught a few times by their runner including the penalty
Santos - 6 Very good 1st half but 2nd half he reverted to standing 5/10 yards off his attacker with the hope that he could catch them. When you play against premiership players, giving them 5 yards start doesn’t work
Johnston - 6 Ridiculously unlucky to be booked early on. Some good tackling but his major fault of backing off and allowing players to run at him cost us goal no 4
John - 7 Very good down the left side. Final ball maybe could be better
Williams -6 Good 1st half but Villa’s midfield ran round him in the 2nd.
Lee - 8 Very good. Lovely play to set up our goal. Tired in 2nd half
Afolayan - 6 Spent too long trying to prove he could dribble past everyone
Kachunga - 6 Busy but spent too much effort trying to win free kicks
Charles - 7 Good to see him back. Must have annoyed the life out of Villa’s defence in the 1st half with his harrying
Dempsey - 6 No real chance to influence anything
Bakayoko He cannot trap a ball and hold it up. Lost possession endlessly
Sadlier Not on for long but looked lost

White of the south - Dapo isn't setting L1 alight and didn't rise to the occasion. As DavidM said: Dapo "Spent too long trying to prove he could dribble past everyone"

As DavidM said: Dapo "Spent too long trying to prove he could dribble past everyone" I think that’s a little harsh just 5 games into a 46 game (plus cup games) season. After all, I can remember him terrorising a few teams last year and scoring quite a number of goals. In my view, he was never going to be as effective against a Premier league team. That doesn’t mean he won’t be against League One opposition, especially those lower down the table than Ipswich & Sheffield Wednesday.

Seriously though, why did Evatt select Dixon??
If he doesn’t have the confidence in him to put him in for league games and on many occasions refuses to even put him on the bench, then why oh why would you give him this game, in front of the cameras, in front of 20 thousand people??
Did Evatt not fancy Round 4, or a cup run?? Is Dixon our FA Cup early round knock out goalkeeper of choice? Will he be the goalie when we play against the likes of Leeds 4th string in that other tin pot nondescript EFL cup competition?? After seeing that first goal, I felt like a Bournemouth fan after Comstive’s corners flew in and although I’ve now watched it over again a few times, I can’t see any impeding on Dixon, just his poor position and probable lack of height, he couldn’t catch a cold. Had he just let Ings run into him rather than leg him up, it might have been Ings getting a yellow rather than him. By the way, why was not a straight red of it was last man and a penalty awarded? I really pity us if Trafford gets an injury
8 days left until window shuts and Matrixman tells us how skint Sharron Britain and FV are if we don’t sign anyone

Rioch, did you not see the foul on Aimson who was guarding the post where the ball entered the net? I have commented on the competence of the officials, and, apart from the unfair early booking of Johnston this was one first of many incidents that showed the incompetence of the officials. Why do so many referees come from the North-East I wonder?

Why do so many referees come from the North-East I wonder? I’m struggling Ken I saw Aimson jostling with a Villa player but didn’t see how that affected Dixons view of the ball On that 3rd goal, he just kind of fell backwards as if to say ‘you’ve beaten me again’ He gives no confidence at all. He was kind of ok in L2 and that’s probably his best ever level but after watching some Vanarama Conference games on BT, there’s better keepers even at that level than Dixon

I think Dixon had a right to think his far post was covered. He is perhaps not big enough to cover a really high cross, a reason why every keeper needs to be 6ft 3ins these days, and why Evatt should have looked for that type of player in the first place. There are some about without needing to loan from City or anyone else, as you rightly say. Overall I am sick of incompetent officials, though. It must have been dispiriting for our under-strength team last night, well though they played, particularly in the first half.

Wasnt surprised to see Dixon in net. Long season, need to keep him ticking over. Throw him a bone and give him the cup games. Though after he surely can only play Papa John games until January and we then decide if we need to move him on.
I thought we may see Toal, Sadlier, Sheehan and maybe Isgrove cameo not sure if Evatt knew how strong Villa where and needed to play a stronger side or risk a real rout.
Beforehand I had visions of Dapo turning up the cameras and Stevie G having no option but to beg his chairman to sign this whizkid.
In truth what we saw was Dapo, struggling to fit into the system but cannot be dropped. For me he started last season amazingly well, then faded as we all did, then we chaged to 532 and its never suited. Either as the AM or the CF.
May be harsh but before the deadline if we could move on Kachunga, Bakayoko, Aimson, Sadlier, Isgrove, Sheehan(loans to Jan) and get CB, RWB and a bona fide striker. We should.
Maybe even lose Dapo and JDB too. Looking at the goals our "strikers" have scored this season they aint clinical enough.

Seems to me that if a Div 1 team selects reserves they will lose to EPL opposition. It is the current fashion alas to use cups for squad building. Put Trafford for Dixon a different game.
Thought game underlined by how far Lee is our bedt player.

I don’t think we should get too despondent yet, it’s still early days and that was a top team we played last night. Sadly IE has gone for quantity with players rather than quality. I fully agree with OM about moving on the players he lists. I’d perhaps keep Sadlier because he’s not really been given a chance to show what he can do since he’s been here. Putting him on for ten minutes against Villa and the Owls on Saturday, what do you expect with both games lost? As for Dixon, I think last night should prove his final first team game, he really isn’t good enough. In fact I’d suggest in future we bring young Hutchinson in instead to give him some experience. We do need something that’s for sure and for me a quality striker, a strong hard, ball winning midfielder and a commanding CH. I’m happy with Bod and Dino but Baka isn’t up to it and Dapo isn’t a striker and should be moved out left again where he can run at people. I suppose that means Evatt adapting his system which he probably won’t do but Dapo certainly is better than he’s being made to look at the moment and doesn’t seem to be enjoying his football like he was last year and before. Can we move players out though? Not without takers so I guess we’ll be stuck with what we’ve got. 🥴
