That was hard work.
I think we approached it wrong – talk of aggressive play. We play passing football not aggressive football.
The ref was a disgrace though. He obviously had it in for Santos who helped him by risking a challenge.
Just good defending 2nd half – Trafford brilliant

What a hard game to watch that was. It was probably hard to play in also.
Bolton Wanderers have obviously offended Ross Joyce sometime in life – the current Mike Riley! That was an abysmal referee performance in the 1st half. He was on the look out for Santos right from the early minutes. Mind you, Santos has no brains as he knew the ref had him marked down and he had been booked so he lunges into a tackle and give the opponent the opportunity to go down. Just think about it, fellow. The ref was looking to send you off.
I heard Radio Stoke at half time. They described it as Harrison sinking to his knees and when the ref reached for his card they thought Harrison was going to be booked for diving. So even the home commentators were amazed.
I also thought the ref was after Williams in the 2nd half.
Despite Vale having some good possession, Afolayan had 2 shots blocked, Bakayoko header cleared off the line. That looked over the line from iFollow. Then Port Vale missed the best chance when their centre half ran unopposed straight through us but shot wide.
I thought we played somewhat into their hands and the referee’s hands with the”need to be aggressive” talk before the match. That is not us.
So half time and we had had some moments but the sending off really did us.
Afolayan was sacrificed for a defender and we spent loads of time defending but Bakayoko, ‘Mr I’m all left foot’, missed a good chance, Morley had a shot well saved and Bodvarsson created space but couldn’t get a good shot in.
Port Vale had most of the ball and crosses and shots came in. Our defensive marking failed us a couple times but Trafford saved and then they headed over.
A good desperate point in the end but what is it with referees?
The manager also needs to control himself – no wonder some refs have it in for us
Marks:-
Trafford - 9 Brilliant. Two mind boggling 2nd half saves and some good time wasting at the end
Bradley - 7 Good again. Eventually ran out of steam
Jones - 7 Caught a couple of times in the 2nd half but steady enough
Santos - 4 Stupid
Johnston - 8 Good defending
Iredale - 8 Another who stopped everything
Williams - 7 Good. The referee had him marked down in the 2nd half so he did well
Morley - 6 Overrun a bit. One great shot but chasing shadows
Dempsey - 5 He really went missing in the 1st half and I would have subbed him not Afolayan
Afolayan - 6 Two good shots saved by their man of the match. Unlucky to be subbed
Bakayoko - 6 I am sure his header was over the line but he struggled as a one-man lone attack
Bodvarsson - 7 Did really well as the lone striker
Sadlier - 6 Did OK
John - 6 Played quite high up
Aimson - 8 Very good – missed one header late on which could have cost us.

Could none of you see the bear hug that Santos had the Vale player in, prior to him going to ground, bearing in mind he was on a yellow card, the guy is just an awful defender.
