We’ll, we did it in the end but seemed to make hard work of it. Decided to go to watch my granddaughters last match of the season for Millmoor Girls against Doncaster Belles which sadly they lost but I think I made the right decision overall. Not being able to therefore get to the UniBol in time I watched Rotherham on Sky instead and what a good game that was. There was an opportunity to equalise for Gills in the second half but they just couldn’t find it so the Millers it is and no “Home” game there for me next year but at least I won’t have the embarrassment of taking my daughter and losing again!! So on to next season and who we sign and lose for next year. Hopefully we’ll keep everyone we want to keep and add the few we need to really compete for the play offs at least next season. As for the play offs, Wycombe just sneaked in so what’s the bets on them winning the play offs and a dose of karma after being unfairly relegated instead of Derby last year? In the meantime, have a good summer all and please don’t be strangers on here because there’s bound to be much to discuss until we start again.

Quite a good battling win with a depleted side. Noone is more of a battler than Charles. His first was a typical breakaway after Bakayoko knocked a ball forward, his second a complete fluke after a tackle but who would deny him that luck.
Otherwise I thought Thomasson slow to work his way in but in the end showed all of his promise. Morley too if hitting a wayward pass or two nevertheless controlled midfield for much of the game perhaps against sub standard opponents?
As ever we had too much negativity in possession and went one down to a delightful goal with a trick too much for I think Johnston but a lovely deft floated shot. Grr...but one of the best goals we have seen to be fair.
Trafford again made some excellent saves. He is just so much more positive without Santos in his way. The same goes for Aimson and Johnston neither in the top echelons of our centre back roll of honour but broadly trying to mark and always competing. It's no coincidence that recent games have been won.
I thought Saddlier had a quiet game. Two awful overhit crosses from good positions and all too often reluctant to go forward. Dapo pulled a lot of strings today and John did well going forward adding a right footed deflected shot to his tally.
In the end Fleetwood survived and we climbed to 9th. No disguising the gaps but as Bodvarsson thumped in the 96th min season finale overall there was something to celebrate and hope going forward
Trafford 8 Jones 6 Aimson 6 Johnston 6 John 7 Saddlier 5 Morley 7 Thomasson 7 Dapo 7 Charles 9 Bakayoko 7 Bodvarsson 6 Kachunga 4 and farewll to Baptiste

A strange scoreline from a very ropey performance.
We had a day of an inability to pass the ball. A very much end of season/pre-season friendly way about the way we played.
But still we won. Somehow, like the Accrington game, we have the ability to get goals out an average performance.
Defensively, we were terrible. The passing between the back 4 was awful. We had endlessly passes between Trafford, Aimson, Jones and Johnston but the problem was that the ball ultimately finished up back at Aimson’s feet. For all his defensive attributes, Aimson just is not a passer of the football so possession was endlessly lost.
Midfield, Morley and Thomason struggled to get forward passes in and were often chasing shadows. Morley had a habit of immediately turning and passing backwards when he received the ball. Sadlier and John as wingbacks got forward well but the final ball was often badly over hit.
Upfront Charles was a menace, in fact in the first half it could be said that he made most tackles in the whole side. Bakayoko was mainly absent and Afolayan couldn’t dominate.
How can I complain, you may ask because we won 4-2 but in all honesty if we had faced one of the top teams today and not a very average Fleetwood, we would have been beaten.
First half, we set off so slowly and did not get near the Fleetwood goal for the first 20 minutes. And it this spell, we conceded. Johnston made an almighty hash of a challenge and was left for dead. The ball was played inside for the Fleetwood player to chip an excellent shot high into the net.
Conceding a goal still didn’t shake us up but eventually their centre half – was he on loan with us a couple of years back? – tried to stoop down to head a clearance and lost the ball. The ball went through to Charles who took his one on one chance very well.
So we got to half time at 1-1 after a very average performance.
Second half, we improved a little but still posed little danger to the Fleetwood goal and our defence were acting panicky every time the ball came into our box.
We then scored when John broke on the left and moved inside. Just when we were thinking he is all left-footed, he shot and scored with his right foot. Not sure how their keeper didn’t stop it.
So 2-1 up, would we take control of the game. Well No! Fleetwood still had quite a bit of possession and won a corner when the left side of the defence went to sleep. And from the corner, our hopeless defence stood rooted and left the niggly Garner to score.
By this time Bodvarsson and Kachunga had come on and Bodvarsson, at least, managed to keep possession of the ball and hold play up well. The less said about Kachunga the better! If fact, when an attack broke down just inside the Fleetwood half, Kachunga just stood off therefore allowing the Fleetwood to clear comfortably. But No, the excellent Charles was having none of it and charged in and tackled the defender to stop him clearing. The tackle was so good and hard that the ball ricocheted into the air and curled up and over the keeper for the most amazing goal of the season. Lucky, Yes but credit Charles for his determination.
3-2 but Fleetwood weren’t bothered as news of Gillingham being 2-0 down meant they were safe and in the last minute a Morley shot deflected into Bodvarsson’s path for him to turn and score with a good finish. Remarkably, this goal plus Portsmouth’s defeat moved us up to 9th so an excellent season.
So a 4-2 win but an odd performance.
Marks:-
Trafford - 6 He made 2 good saves and caught some corners very well but overall, the defence was quite shaky.
Jones - 6 Got forward in the 2nd half but needs a good centre half next to him.
Aimson - 5 An out and out defender who defends OK but he just doesn’t fit into Evatt’s preferred style of play because his passing is rank bad.
Johnston - 4 Yet another mistake ridden performance. Culpable for the first goal and not too smart for the 2nd either. His inability to win headers when challenged is a really negative point.
John - 7 Second half in particular, he got forward well.
Thomason - 6 OK but his dependence on his left foot caught him out a couple of times
Morley - 5 Strange performance. For some reason, each time he received the ball he immediately turned and played it backwards.
Sadlier - 5 Got into some good positions but his final ball was poor
Bakayoko - 5 Missed a golden chance from probably our only good move of the first half. He is not a starter for me.
Afolayan - 6 Busy and caused some concerns. He couldn’t reach the heights of earlier in the season.
Charles - 8 Very good. So busy and even though his second goal was a fluke, he worked for it whereas others just stood back.
Bodvarsson - 7 When he came on, we started to hold the ball upfront. Took his goal well
Kachunga - 4 His whole performance summed up by Charles’ 2nd goal. He stood off whereas Charles challenged and got the luck. He contributes little for me.
Baptiste 2 minutes to say goodbye. Thanks for the effort, especially last season.
