If any modern player wanted to get hero, legendary status in todays game, playing for Bolton, of course, just watch the passion John McGinlay shows when he pops them 2 in v Wolves The sheer elation in his body when that second one goes on is an absolute treat for any Wanderer to see
I’d love the current Wanderers historian to pass on these Higson classics to Ian Evatt to show to the current squad, see what they make of it!!
The likes of Dion and Dapo will probably never see the adulation afforded to SupaJohn and the Rioch squad until they can produce anything like what we’re witnessing here on this thread, but crikey, show that level of excitement when you score a goal and our fans will take you to their heart in a flash
I guess the Reading final will be hard pressed to beat for me, but these two legged games v Wolves are a close second

Fantastic memories rftr and blessed to have actually been there to experience them both. As you say, that play off final against Reading will be hard to even imagine ever beating for sheer excitement and drama but I agree those battles with a Steve Bull inspired Wolves were some games to treasure, especially Super Johns enthusiasm, what wouldn’t we give for even a bit of that from our current squad? Hard to see where it would come from really though because the squad is just so plain vanilla to me with no real characters in there. Maybe one will emerge but I don’t see it so far and I just wonder if Evatt would actually want one as he seems to want to be the main man all the time himself?

2 ex-Wigan managers feature as players in this..both Paul Cook and Paul Jewell. 1st goal for us from Trevor Morgan . yet another from a corner. 2nd one. deflected effort from Jeff Chandler. got to laugh at Dave Higson...raving that one up as a super, super, brilliant goal. love the enthusiasm, but I wouldn't be raving that one up so much. . it's not a goal of the month contender . 3rd one. header from Trevor Morgan from a free kick. another set piece goal. !! at DH again. are there any goals he doesn't think are superb !! any chance of a similar result next time out ??

action from : Football League Div. 4, 22.09.87 . goal scored by Trevor Morgan. yet another header from a cross . bit of controversy at the end. DH going off into a rant about the ref , and calling him a "prune". controversial penalty given for Scunny in injury time.

not much to cheer in this one. 3-0 defeat to Chesterfield . ( 85/86 season). fair bit of crowd trouble around the 1.50 mark, and scenes of police rushing in with dogs around the 6.20 mark. DH manages his own unique take on things....Police "attacking" the Bolton fans. someone then seems to have a word with him, before he moves to a slightly less partisan & fairer summary of things. both sides / no angels etc.

Bolton v Bury- Div 3 play off 2nd leg. May 1991. few things noticed. Parky playing for Bury. 0.03 in. Philliskirk goal - not direct from a corner, but in the 2nd phase scramble. 2 or 3 good/very good saves by Dave Felgate. Great last words by DH. "Let’s ger um stuffed" !

Div 3 clash between us & Cardiff. 88/89 4-0 win. goals from : 1. JT . 2. Julian Darby - good header from a cross by JT 3. nice goal. cultured pass from Barry Cowdrill finding Gary Henshaw onside ( possibly off ?- hard to tell ). he takes it down well and calmly lifts it over the keeper. classy finish. 4. shot by Gary Henshaw hits off Darby and goes in. goal was credited to JD. this game was on 2/9/88. first home game back in Div 3 after our 1 season in Div 4. we finished 10th that season. bet we didn't make 7 signings in Jan either. the crowd that day a rather low 4831. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/58035993have a guess what our first home game this season got, after a season in the 4th tier. ...... ..... ... 16087 ! www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/58035993( click lineups tab and it's down at the bottom )

“RIDIT’LAS”
That’s ridiculous if you’re not Dave Higson
“Police have made a right pigs ear out of this”
“Bricks and concrete being thrown by the Chesterfield fans and the police are doing nowt about it”
I love Dave Higson❤️
Once had the pleasure of one of his ‘coach interviews’ en route to The Hawthorns where I had the pleaser of watching it back on the way home
“So lad, how d’ya think the Wanderers ul ged on te’day”
“I think we’ll win 2-0”
“And who’s gonna score for us”
“Walker and McGinlay”
We got beat 2-0 think Bob Taylor got both😬😬😂😂
