After a wonderful hard fought victory against The Imps of Lincoln, we turn our attention to the ‘Boat Race’ United’s
Oxford up next followed by their fierce rivals Cambridge Always wondered why these two always get to the finals of the boat race😂😂
Always liked Karl Robinson and what he’s achieved. Always gone under the radar in management terms, could and possibly should have been managing at a higher level and even turned down joining Leeds back in 2016 He’s a manager that likes, or knows the Play-Offs so well having guided The U’s to the finals last season and the season before, albeit losing both He also lead the MK Dons to promotion to the Championship in 2015, so, although noted as a play off nearly man, he knows how to gain promotion and his teams cannot be underestimated, we’ll have another tough game on Saturday They’ve also had a fairly decent start to the season.
Apart from the interference of the Wigan Pathetic Carabao Cup game in between I’m hoping for maximum points from the ‘Boat Race’ United teams
A vociferous ReeMac crowd, and a solid defensive display, garnished with some gritty midfield battling, that should see us win this one, I’m that confident, although we do need ‘extra’ firepower
COYWM Let’s do this

I agree rftr, the team is coming on nicely and the new players settling in well. Fitness is also on the up and we now have multiple choices, other than up top as we know, of personnel. As you say, Oxford are a good side and have started well but I think we’ll be too strong for them and if anything I’ll go for another narrow win for us, although we may get two this week rather than just the one we usually have to settle for. Dixon seems to be settling in now too, which must have a steadying effect on the defence, so I expect him to be No1 now but what a shame Delf can’t even get a spot on the bench!! I think IE has finally seen the light with him and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him off before the end of the window as there must surely be someone who hasn’t cottoned on to how lazy he is? All that talent and ability wasted, such a shame really.

To be honest W63, if Evatt goes out and gets a striker, I’m going to guess that he’s been on this forum and read our comments😂😂 He must have seen the BN posters negativity towards his best mate Delf, why else would he drop him?
I think Evatt is chiphillspud 😂😂😂
I love the feeling of being equal amongst the Ipswich’s, Sunderland’s, Sheff Wed’s and Wycombe’s of this league and we’ve only just joined it. I certainly don’t feel we are out of place. All this after almost going bump.
I was an AntiEvatteer once and now I’m backing him to be the next BSA, only better, so he’s definitely won me over. Just his dialogue and his after match assessments, make Keith Hill AND Parkhoofson so so amateur. He is the future and I hope he gets the backing that his enthusiasm deserves

Fair point Wots, you’ve got me I only put them down as they’ve just dropped from the Championship and they’ve had a decent start We ARE the one and only Wanderers no mistake and I’ll up my meds, but my point being, we aren’t out of place and i’d hazard a guess that we’re much fancied to do something this season by the majority of the football pundits that are assessing L1 clubs chances Apparently there’s another team somewhere in the Midlands that like our last name so much, they’ve adopted it too🤔 COYWM ⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️

We’ll actually rftr, other than Ipswich’s brief foray into Europe, none of those clubs have a history as rich as ours so it should really be them keeping up with us. Other than a big fan base what else have they got?

I suppose I’m mentioning us in the vein of a ‘new’ BWFC’ as in, we almost did a Bury and almost dropped down into obscurity and perhaps maybe even returned as AFC Bolton or never to return again, so when I mention us as equal to the aforementioned teams, I’m talking in the present tense, rather than our rich history If I was talking in history, you’re spot on W63, Ipswich can brag a better past than ourselves when it comes to old first division titles as do Sheff Wed and Sunderland, we’d probably pip them on FA Cup wins but that’s all
Unlike the 3 mention above, we’ve never won the old first div title

That’s true rftr, amazingly despite finishing 2nd a number of times we never actually won the first division title and even then those runner up spots were a long time ago but we should also remember that out of those clubs you mention, we’ve actually got a much better recent history that any of them with European qualifications, two League Cup Wembley finals and two FA Cup semi finals. People like to say our successes were historic but that’s just not true. We may not have the fan base we had all those years ago, or the big city club populations to pull from like the Sheffield’s and Sunderlands now but then they don’t have the physical competition for fans locally to them that we have. At least we have a firm, committed fan base and when we go to the likes of Wigan and pretty much take over their ground as we will next week, we should all consider just how big our club really is. Maybe as Rabbie Burns said all those years ago “ O wad some power the giftie gie us the power tae see oursels as others see us” we might see that other teams fans consider us bigger than we sometimes do ourselves!!

Actually that's very true, 63. I was always less than happy with Sam Allardyce's references to "Little Old Bolton". Our local council has let our image drop over the years, whereas growing up I was assured we would be the next town to be made a city. During the last few years even loyal Wanderers' supporters living down south have tried to tell me our cause is useless due to the large number of neighbouring clubs including the two Manchesters taking our support. I have always refuted this, and now I see the real picture emerging with people in charge of BWFC who realise what a place our town is and how a successful football club can unite and excite the population. I feel sure that with the help of the football club the town will soon regain its pre-eminence. The team under Ian Evatt is ensuring us of that.

It’s amazing how a bad town council can destroy their own environment. I lived in Rotherham for many years, moving there with work in 1981. At that time it was a thriving town centre with all the shops and stores you’d imagine but of course it was also largely based upon Steel and Coal which was just about to decline massively. However, during the eighties, the left wing labour council changed the landscape completely and set the seeds of destruction. Firstly they created a Retail Park on land which previously was earmarked for the Meadowhall Shopping Centre before their move near the M1 and instead of restricting it to the B&Q’s and Furniture Retailers of this world, encouraged with cheap rents the major retailers like M&S, WH Smith’s and Next to relocate there, with free parking and in the process destroying the town centre. At the same time they took the shilling of the governments offers to councils to take in totally disproportionate numbers of refugees. I could list many more abject failures but if anyone wanted an example of a town destroyed by their actions, Rotherham would be hard to be beaten.
On the reverse side of that, Rotherham United were allowed to purchase a piece of town centre land previously earmarked for their new town hall and finally get out of the hole that was Millmoor, at the same time getting a new owner and the New York Stadium was built and though relatively small, immensely improves the towns view as you enter Rotherham. Incidentally the land was formerly occupied by a company called Guest and Chrimes who actually made all the water hydrants you see in New York, hence the grounds rather strange name. So Rotherham FC could conversely be used as an exact opposite of the town council in regenerating and energising what they were responsible for. Let’s hope the same thing applies at Bolton and the club can help put new life into the town as a whole, despite the setbacks Bolton has received. Well done FV and IE and long may they continue to put heart back into the town.

Remember whites, football and politics don't mix!
As you mention RU's geographical location to the town, well it's only a fifteen minute walk to the market an 9 minutes to the town hall. Ring any bells?
Sadly, Davies did what happened in many American cities and bought cheap land on the outskirts, thus having a huge impact on the inner city footfall. Toronto of course built their stadiums in the city and is easy to walk to after dropping the missus off to go shopping, something that many couples did when we were located at Burnden.
Portimao FC, a Portuguese Prem. Club is located slap bang in the middle of the city too. Easy to walk to and shopping nearby.
FV are doing a grand job rebuilding the club, but I doubt very much it will have much impact on the town centre.

Good posts W63 & Wots
Wonder if the Metrolink extension to Bolton will ever happen and what that might do to further impact our town as I’m not so sure it would be widely used for incoming traffic, as our town centre has absolutely nothing of attraction, save for the protracted university town which it will become in the next 5-10 years, full of high rises student accommodation, converted Whittaker’s/Beatles into further student accommodation, crikey, I’m even involved with the new building opposite Deansgate post office which used to be the YMCA, now more student buildings.
W63 last time I went to Millmoor, crikey, it’s so long ago, I think we got beat 2 nil, or 2-1 possibly Goater and our very own Tony Cunningham scored for the Millers if memory serves me right circa 1992

The old grounds still there rftr, just lying rotting, like much of Rotherham town centre to be honest, which is such a shame as the town centre itself with the Minster overlooking and many fine timber framed buildings in the central shopping area, could be brilliant with a bit of thought. Sadly there are now no shops of note, just predominantly charity shops, betting shops and building society’s. Very few people visit it now, mainly just the big Tesco built where the old library used to be. I’m afraid it’s a similar story in many towns now, including Bolton and until councils have a major rethink, I’m afraid it won’t change. At least with the UniBol you can drop the missus off to shop whilst you’re at the game whereas with Rotherham, despite it being in the town centre, there aren’t any decent shops to shop at anyway and it’s so long since I was in Bolton town centre I’m afraid I wouldn’t even know what it’s like!!

Sadly there are now no shops of note, just predominantly charity shops, betting shops and building society’s. Very few people visit it now That describes most of the UK. If Bill Bryson wrote his small islands book now would be a Groundhog day of charity shop browsing with a Greggs lunch and seeing if there was a bargain, likely stolen, from cash converters. Perhaps the towns undeterestimated internet and peoples shopping patterns. Anyway back to the game. Maybe status quo resumed with our hard thought win. Back to the 1-0. I still think its too early to tell what this league has to offer and what we have to offer it. So not losing would be main objective but know Evatt will want a win. Heard the snippet from Quest that 3 of thier players went off through injury. Not sure which 3 or if they were 3 main players but lets hope that gives us a real advantage. And sods law but how much better is James Henry for Oxford than for us? One for the Parky fans again?

Another tight match today.
The second successive match against last season’s play-off teams.
I assume that John will return if fit and Isgrove will replace Bakayoko. Then the only decision is which 2 from Santos, Baptiste and Johnston. I would go for the future with Santos & Johnston.
Another soaking is forecast for the weather today so lets go home wet but happy.
As I said, I expect a tightish game but Mr Optimistic is also looking for a win, a close 1-0 for me.
