I can only make the same comments about I’ve made numerous times this season, we should have been out of sight now. We have so little composure in the final quarter and can’t shoot for toffee. If Dapo had got his early chance on target it was in and how Doyle missed the sitter minutes later only he knows. Even in the last minute of the half, Dapo passes into the box for Lee to run onto, perfect ball perfect opportunity but instead of shooting looks to pass and loses the ball. We just don’t have that killer instinct and whilst Maddison hasn’t been brilliant I love the way he’s always looking to shoot and go forward. I’m sure eventually he’ll click and hopefully in this half but we do red to be more incisive around goal if we want to continue our run.

You can really see us losing this. We’ve just lost any kind of cohesion, we can’t pass, we can’t cross we’ve just lost any semblance of a team. Give the ball away, weak in the tackle and Southend beginning to realise they don’t need to be worried about us. We’ll be lucky to get away with a point here.

How did we win that?
The 2nd half was appalling but Lady Luck has found us at last!
We had some luck at Mansfield and even more today

Pretty awful really. Not much of quality if some good battling. Lots of misdirected headers and passes.
A turgid bobbly pitch helped neither side. Southend offered little.
Not sure what happened re our goal but good on Miller.
I think it may well be time for Gilks to make way. Did ok today but felt like a swansong.
I just don't get Delfouneso's selection especially with Doyle who is so ordinary on the ball. Doyle might have scored two but when he doesn't he's no better than Miller.
In the end a bit of skill from Gnahouha, Sarcevic's one contribution, some odd keeping and was it a crossbar or just the keeper and Miller's opportunism won the day
One to forget?
Gilks 5 Jones 6 Santos 8 Baptiste 8 John 7 Lee 7 Williams 7 Maddison 6 Dapo 5 Doyle 3 Delfouneso 4 Sarcevic 4 Gnahouha 5 Isgrove 3 Miller 6

Dead right David, that was excruciatingly bad. First half we looked good and should have been home and dry but again lose any hint of composure in and around the box with only Maddison looking to shoot. Doyle again missing chances and doing very little else and no surprise he went off but it was down to King Arthur again to create the opportunity we eventually scored from. I’m not sure I agree with making the multiple substitutions so soon, I’d rather they were staggered unless there’s a reason to do it. I don’t know how many chances Evatt’s going to persevere giving Delfouneso chances though because he delivers absolutely nothing for me. Isgrove likewise and I can’t believe that young Ronan wouldn’t deliver better if given an opportunity and how come Sarcevic gets a chance to come straight back in instead of Thomason who’s been a standout performer for weeks. Still, it’s 3 points and though we were absolutely dreadful today, I think on the balance of play over 90 minutes we did deserve it but it does concern me that we can’t turn over poor sides like this and win games comfortably. So we’ve repeated our run earlier in the season now and got within striking distance of the play off places and with two very winnable games to come can surely not throw the chance away again? Or can we??

even the Bolton FM lot agreeing it was turgid. I was only thinking just before we scored, it was just as dull as the 1st half but without the 2 decent chances. then suddenly gifted a goal out of nothing. we're certainly getting our share of luck at the mo. I think Sarf'end being as bad as us added to the boredom. at least watching Mansfield, you could respect their good play at times. with this lot, even the card-board cut-out fans looked "board" perhaps one of those games when you think it's going to be easy and you drop your levels. our clean sheet rarely threatened. think they could have played all week and not scored. their topscorer has 3. and top assister just 2. woeful ! . unbeaten run continues. and 2 winnable fixtures next. Scunny then Barrow. could easily get 6 pt's. Scunny might be more of a challenge. I see Van veen got an assist for them in a 3-1 win. if he's stays fit, he's a big threat. I presume Taft is allowed to play in that one. i know he's no longer a loan player, but could we stipulate he doesn't face us this season ??

How did we win that?
A match where we should have been ahead at half time and then we contributed practically nothing in the 2nd half.
We set off well and Doyle should have scored when the keeper dropped Maddison’s shot but he somehow shot over.
After the good start, we had a quiet spell in the middle of the 1st half but then came to life in the latter stages and had a goal disallowed for offside and then a Doyle shot somehow kicked off the line. Goal line technology may well have helped us there.
It’s hard to work out what happens at half time but on Wednesday, Mansfield came out and over ran us and today we just did not play in the 2nd half. Poor passing, no midfield control.
Their keeper gave us a goal late on when he misjudged Sarcevic deflected shot and palmed the ball onto Miller who was awake enough to take the chance.
A win is a win but we must address this 2nd half fade away as it is becoming a regular event
Marks:-
Gilks - 6 Nothing to do with regard to shop stopping but his kicking is getting desperate
Jones - 6 Steady
John - 6 Not as dynamic as Wednesday but OK
Santos - 7 Strong as ever
Baptiste - 7 Solid
Williams - 7 After I have slagged him off in previous games, I thought he did well today
Lee - 7 Faded second half but good
Maddison - 6 Just needs to get some more game time and he will be fine
Afolayan - 5 Starts well but fades badly
Delfouneso - 5 Apart from one run I the 2nd half, he was absent
Doyle - 5 Should have scored early on from keeper’s rebound but still not sharp enough
Gnahoua - 5 Involved in the move for the goal but mostly defensive
Isgrove - 5 Again, I just don’t see what he does
Sarcevic - 5 Looked rusty but involved in build up to goal
Miller - 6 Credit for being awake for the goal

Farce of a goal, quite funny to watch but full credit to Miller for spotting the opportunity. Awful quality of football from both sides. So many basic mistakes being made and nobody seems to be improving. Santos and Baptiste only ones who deserve some praise. And what about IE with that inane M****n like shouting and screaming? Does he really think it does any good ffs? He will have eleven players playing through gritted teeth dying to do him an injury

That goal is hilarious! Might need to investigate the goalies betting patterns. Makes up for Crellin dropping the ball at Cambridge.

To be fair to him o2m, it may have been the sun in his eyes but whatever it was, it worked in our favour. Only 3 points from the play offs now and win our next two games and we should be in there and breathing down the necks of the automatics. The problem is, despite the new arrivals, you just can’t have any true confidence in us beating anybody.

seeing the goal again on the Quest tv highlights, If I was a Southend fan i'd be fuming with their defence. ball is in the air an eternity after the Sarce blocked shot. awkward ball for the keeper to deal with. should do better. BUT...for gods sake be in a position to help out. don't just stand there. be pro-active.
Miller can't believe his luck...to be unmarked in the 6 yd box waiting for a rebound. you can't even credit Miller too much. took it well, but it's the obvious position to stand to try and poach one. how on earth a defender ( or 2) doesn't think it's the obvious place to stand too is mind-boggling.
just a small point..possibly for O.M as he likes to speculate on these matters..but Miller scored winner yesterday, and Gnahoua in previous game. possibly both Phoenix signings. all 3 players involved in yesterdays goal.. from the "old guard" ...Gnahoua, Sarce, Miller. as we thought competition for places forcing old guard to raise their game. that's not to say the odd new signing hasn't helped ..Lee and John both done well. still need way more from Dapo and MM.. but you would expect them to be a bit rusty and need 3 or 4 games to really get up to speed.
