Southend had a terrible January leaking 11 goals scoring 4 and a thrashing by the team that thrashed us, PVale 4 defeats, 1 win and 1 draw
February has started a little better for them and their last 2 results are not to be underestimated v Cambridge 0-0 and a victory at Newport 0-1
We have to be on our mettle and stop inviting goals in but also show some of that spirit at Mansfield Do this and we should get a win I’ll stick my neck out on a 1-2 win for the Trotters

Well, as usual it depends on which team turns up? I’d like think that after Wednesday the lads would be really up for this one and if they are we should win comfortably. Unfortunately, that’s been the case all season and yet we haven’t actually bossed any game for more than short periods. We do though seem to be settling down and the new players have unquestionably added more quality to the side and it’s surely only a matter of time before we wallop somebody. I think if we don’t win this one, we can realistically kiss goodbye to any serious hopes of making the play offs and frankly we don’t deserve to if we can’t beat the poorer teams in the league, so I’m going to stick with my gut feeling that we’ll win this one comfortably and go for 0-2 to the Whites.

Wednesday’s match should have given great confidence to the team so, hopefully, we’ll go into this game with high hopes.
I have only had 2 trips to Roots Hall and 2 defeats. A 2-1 defeat when Richard Sneekes rifled in a rocket shot to put us ahead and then we conceded 2 and then the amazing 5-2 defeat in our promotion year in the Championship. We won the league with 98 points and Southend finished bottom but it all went wrong that day.
Other than those 2 games, we have a decent record against Southend so let’s continue that today.
The defence will presumably pick itself although I would like to see Jensen involved if only on the bench. We got away with one on Wednesday when Gilks went down injured – we must have a sub keeper on the bench.
I think he will keep Lee and Williams together but I expect to see Sarcevic start the match. I would leave Isgrove out and put Afolayan onto the wing.
There are calls for Gnahoua to start but I think his role as an impact sub is the best position.
I mentioned in the Mansfield thread the amazing run we had in our promotion season in 1992/93 under Bruce Rioch. After 28 games, as now, we were in 8th position – 4 games without a win. The final 18 games were 15 wins, 2 draws and 1 defeat which took us up to 2nd. We need to move from 11th to 7th now so a run like that, which shouldn’t be out of the question, would get us into the playoffs.
So we need a positive approach today, no silly mistakes and a bit more ruthless upfront.
I go for a 2-0 win.

I’d be surprised and also a little disappointed, if Sarcevic does start today David. It would not only be grossly unfair to those who’ve done so well since he’s been out but also because I think his place was questionable before he was injured. I’d see him replacing Comley on the bench but hopefully not being used before Arthur and Thomason later in the game. For me he has to work his way back into the side and in fairness might be more value as an impact sub later in the game like King Arthur.
As you said with the run we had under Bruce, there is no reason that we can’t go on a run like that again this season. I haven’t seen any side yet that I think can live with us if we play to our strengths, which we haven’t done consistently in any game yet. We are though improving all the time and with the higher quality new additions now settling in, you can see us getting stronger all the time in the games we have left to play. It’s maybe too much of a stretch to make the automatics but certainly the play offs should be well within our reach. Now I’ve said that and tempted fate, I hope we don’t go and chuck it all away reverting to type?

Yeah hesistant to use the term "winnable games" as its L2. They're all winnable and all banana skins. But from the 3 coming up 7points has to be the target.
We're now at a place that if we all turn up and play we win. Simple as. In my view we have the best LB, CB, DM in John, Santos and Lee and the most dangerous attack in Afaloyan, Doyle and Maddison.
We fall short on keeper and RB but yeah those 6 players along with professionals like Baptiste, Williams, Delfouneso and Gilks should be favourites home and away every game
Getting the mindset right. Getting the consistency is what evatt needs to work on.
I'll take a draw today. Keep the unbeaten streak going and get us ready for back to back home games against more bottom 5 clubs albeit they may jump up the table by the time we play them.
P.s i didnt think Sarce would be in the frame yet. Thought he was a few weeks off still from even training?

this should be very winnable. i'll go 2-0. we need to get MM firing for chances of play-offs. if he really fires... automatics is not out of the question. Lee has made a big difference. be interesting to see if he can cope with all the hectic run of games.
I don't quite know why we've signed 2 on loan left backs. surely Mascoll could have been an adequate back up. then it frees up an extra loan spot. if the rest of the team is functioning you can cope with the odd little makeshift like Pedersen at left back in BSA days.
back to today. Southend have had 2 good away results in the last 2. beating Newport and drawing with Cambridge. both quality opponents. & clean sheets in both of them. though it's fair to say Newport are a shadow of their 1st half season form. just 1 win in 11. the recall of Scott Twine back to Swindon..a big loss.
Southend's home form is poor. against sides currently in the top 17 places....they've played 9 of those at home...and lost 8. drew 1. won 0. conceding 2 or more in 7 of those 9 games .
in their last 9 games (home and away), they not scored more than 1 goal per game. ( i.e not hit 2 or more ) . so as long as we score, virtually, the minimum we get is a draw.
team news as ever will be interesting. Sarce start, Jensen ? might Lee be rested..coming off last game. Gnahoua start ?

We must hope that Delfouneso has some impact. Always possible but .....

That bench is scary for Southend and Bolton. Imagine after defending and getting the run around against Afo, Maddison and Delfouenso you see King Arthur, Miller, Thomason and Sarcevic coming on.
And of the flip side theres no GK, CB out of 7. Were told Williams can play at the back. We were told that Marc Wilson could go across the line and in midfield too.
Lets hope Williams has some spare goalie gloves too.

It does look that we have a full 18. A real strength. I just hope we play to our ball carrying strengths and that Doyle stays put.

Pleased with that starting eleven, Fonz a question mark but still more productive than Isgrove, who I expect to see little of now. Great strength off the bench but still amazed Evatt believes the risk is worthy of not including a keeper. I hope it doesn’t but one day, you just have to think it will come back to bite him. Can’t see any reason we can’t get a comfortable 3 points today and though some are considering a draw acceptable, I definitely don’t and would consider anything less than a win points dropped unnecessarily. A straightforward 2-0 victory to the Whites today for me.

On top . They have a suggestion of a threat on set pieces. Doyle missed a good follow up chance and his effort cleared off the line was good. Maddison is finding his range.
But we are too ponderous and are not good at final balls. Dapo is doing too much, Delfouneso too little. Both had moments.
Lee and Williams good.
We should be ahead really and need to convert soon. Subs may well be crucial. Game needs something to spark it into life

desperately dull most of that. Sarf'end hardly threatened. looked like us early season. get to edge of box then don't seem to want to shoot.
struggling to stay awake. we're creating very little as usual. MM shot on 7 mins. don't know how Doyle managed to miss the follow up. and then just before HT Doyle with shot cleared off the line, following a corner. we maybe need to shift the whole team up the field 20 yards. not seen Dapo really get at them in final 3rd. seems mainly to have ball on edge of our box or half way line.
at least we have plenty of subs if it continues so dull for first 10 mins of 2nd half.

A straightforward 2-0 victory to the Whites today for me. If no sub keeper does cost us can see Evatt saying we won games like Mansfield by having attack minded subs change the game so the 3 points lost in that doesnt compare to the points gained by making those attacking subs. My point, and common sense, you dont need to pick one or the other. Sub keeper and 6 attacking options knowing we do have versatility in the starting XI. Part of me wonders if Evatt secretly/subconsciously wants it to fail so he can get his interview on Sky Sports and Quest and roll out his stats and show the world his forward thinking style of management.
