Strangely, albeit through the medium of Ifollow, I seem to have made myself watch every game so far. Clearly we do not see training, we do not know the individuals, we do not have the statistics and we, at least I, are not qualified football managers or coaches. That said I've been pretty critical of Ian Evatt, more than ever before of a manager in 60 years. This may explain why. I'm just going to have a run through the squad and offer what I think I have seen
Gilks A positive vocal influence, still good at making saves but visibly tiring and making errors. I thought his attempt at the recent penalty was defeatist and signalling time up.
Crellin Really quite good on saves, flexible, athletic and Ok with passing, not so much kicking. Poor temperament, little judgment especially aerially and prone to mistakes--sorry but an orchestra cannot afford a member playing wrong notes
Baptiste Woefully slow and one paced but solid in close marking and capable of good forward movement and making goalscoring chances for himself. Easily outpaced and outmanoeuvred. Clumsy at times
Brockbank. One of the more intelligent team members. Excellent long crossfield passer. Reasonably fit. Terminally slow on the turn and could never play full back or midfield at this level- niche if any might be a Todd like role in the centre and captain
Santos- lots of strength, good in one to ones, excellent powering forward, struggles to mark consistently and loses concentration; not sure he has the mobility but dynamic in midfield when striding forward, decent passer. Poor on set pieces
Delaney-- Reasonably solid tier two central defender in back four. Embarrassed in possession and slow. Just about ok on left of back three, poor left back. Can get a goal upfront- has some sense of goal at set pieces on our corners
Greenidge- Not fit but quite quick going forward and quite strong, fairly secure passer, not a left back and naive centrally, goes to ground too easily, is really the only player with aerial presence on our set pieces and corners
Jones- Good , honest player, one of the fittest, can shuttle between right back and right wing back, carries the ball well and has an eye for goal but very one footed and no idea of crossing
Hickman-- Good control, tidy player and can send a cross Beckham like without beating a man, also reasonable good defensively rather lightweight
Jackson -- quite impressed- active and our best dead ball kicker apart from Darcy, lacks confidence and pace but has injected greater mobility
Mascoll -- Looked lightweight but had good touch , passed well and scored a goal on his one sub appearance, suffered from being paired with Gordon early on
Gordon-- looked to have something and showed a turn of speed at times but drifted and looked overawed and a bit out of it
Comley - willing , looks for the ball ad has plenty of bite in the tackle, our only angry midfielder. poor receiving technique when in our half and easily dispossessed- moving forward could impress
Crawford-- at his best can hit a good through ball and took one good teed up goal, very poor passing consistency and a liability in defensive midfield with little mobility or pace , a poor man's Barry Bannen, habitually disappoints
Sarcevic- his very great strength is invisibility, stealth and forward marauding. Martin Peters was ahead of Sarcevic's time! can score goals, can miss goals and passes. Quite strong. Good conman re fouls. But do invisibility and captaincy combine?
Hurford - Lockett- we were treated to one glimpse and he really impressed me- a bit Lookman like, no surprise that Wolves covet- will probably join the ranks of those who getaway
Darcy - Our best player potentially, good energy and until Lee and Thomasson our only off the ball runner. Maybe our only player capable of shooting consistently. struggles defensively but amply compensates
Amoateng- Another unrepeated promising cameo
Gnahouha- definite promise, looks for goal with both feet and has excellent close control with his left, not sure he can play a full game but should feature regularly from the bench
Miller - looks bright and lively and got one good goal but generally ineffective and lightweight
Thomasson- lacks pace but very intelligent midfielder with a special left foot. can shoot, can push the team forward, not yet strong enough or experienced enough positionally and defensively
Tutte- our player of the season so far, neat tidy, strong in the tackle early on, good passer and at his absolute best sweeping forward and shooting, alas not deployed in that role. lacks fitness and doesn't last every game
Doyle- a good box player who takes on too many chances but scores a handful. Variable close control, good aerially in terms of shooting, needs a big player to take pressure off and better service-- about 50% of ALF but at L2 should be an asset
Delfouneso- very good skill moving forward and a turn of pace but all too often absent, moody and lazy. Often leaves us one short in midfield and cannot partner Doyle. Must be very difficult to manage to get the best out of him
Kioso -- useful could have been an excellent central support for Doyle
Lee- looks very promising, excellent off teh ball and moving forward- can he get match fit in time
Elbouzedi- looks ok, a turn of speed, a willingness to cut inside but not as yet to shoot, lacks a bit of confidence and experience, not for me a starter
If I am anywhere near right in this analysis, we sorely lack leadership and captaincy. We have square pegs in round holes and we need to have more confidence and trust in our home grown youngsters. We have no consistent team play or any particular identity other than being a relatively easy touch for an organised counter attacking team. And for me the buck stops where it should with IE. I hope that he can do better and that his analysis is better than mine and will develop but I see only defeats and a relegation battle ahead presently. I don't see this as a matter of two or three recruits but rather as figuring out how to organise what we have better. I do think we have more than enough to survive, but much as Eric Morecambe with Andre Preview- we are playing 'all the right notes but in the wrong order!'
