The problem lies in the fact that whoever selected these players had little or no idea of what constitutes a team's strength, namely its spine, There was no experienced goalkeeper, centre halves were hit and miss, central midfield was inadequately catered for, and centre forward was forgotten. I know there are those who would say we signed Doyle, but in my opinion he is what used to be called a "sniffer", someone who feeds off chances provided by a larger man beside him. For strikers like Doyle's success last season you have to look for the guy who sweated to lay them on for him (NOT Isgrove I would think) The defensive midfielder par excellence we have all experienced was Ivan Campo. Not quite tall enough for a commanding centre back Big Sam converted him, making use of his defensive qualities and his passing ability. We have never recovered from Gartside's ill-considered moving him out to Ipswich in my opinion, to save cash and we have not seen his like since, although Bridcutt was a brief glimpse of what should have been. All good teams revolve around this type of organisation whatever the system. I think Ian Evatt has erred in trying to start this ill=equipped squad with playing from the back. Even if he had had these key positions filled and at his disposal he would have been well-advised to start with the more usual formations of 442 or 443 and been able to adapt when all were settled at the club. And its not too late for him to try it. In this small critique I have not mentioned the other square pegs in round holes, like the full backs, and the slow movement and lack of creativity of the centre backs he is employing, nor the waste of obvious talents like Sarcevic and Darcy, but I think it is clear if Evatt can get his act together, or if someone more experienced is brought in, the foundations are there with one or two shrewd and necessary additions introduced, and if some of the elder statemen and those who play like them are rested

You're not wrong in your last paragraph Ken, but sadly I'm afraid this lot are National league and mid-lge 2.
If Evatt persists with his stubborn attitude of keeping with Plan A, but no Plan B then he is doomed to failure imo. Is it not obvious to him from the posts on here and the BN, that these players are not good enough to fit the tactical system that he has in his dreams.
Give him the Jan transfer window, but if there is no improvement, then options should be considered by the board. The fear I have is that the longer you stay in this division, the harder it is to get out.
He did a good sales job on the season tickets this time, but what of next season if the sales don't meterialize? Then what? Attracting reasonably priced/quality players will be difficult.

I agree with you about Evatt’s sticking with his plan A being a problem wots,he seems determined to make it work despite all the evidence saying he hasn’t the players to deliver it. That inflexibility worries me, as did Parkinson’s refusal to bin his one up top hoof ball, which was equally unproductive. Top managers get there by accepting what their players can and can’t do and adapt their systems to that. What they don’t do is continually expect their players to do what is obviously beyond them. Playing good players out of position is tough but asking weak or inexperienced players to do it is surely just suicide. We need to give Evatt the January window but promotion this season is still a must if he is to be given more than that.

just a thought... didn't the staff and players supposedly stay overnight in a hotel in Cheltenham to help recovery and get them in better shape for this Tranmere game..and then we lose and he comes out with all that drivel. bet the board are well chuffed with that one. money well spent. mind you , i'm losing a bit of faith in them... www.theboltonnews.co.uk/sport/18956945.bolton-wanderers-0-tranmere-rovers-3---live-updates-league-two/have you seen this entry at 1.30 pm in that link.. She also talks about Ian Evatt's appointment as manager, as opposed to head coach, adding: "Ian is now at the forefront of first team matters after making tremendous progress since his appointment." tremendous progress ? calm down dear . we were among the favourites to go up . we've been virtually bottom half all the time. what would she have said if we'd been top 2 or 3 all the time. no perspective. they hired KH . then sacked him soon after. then appointed Phoenix. then ditched him. even Ken Anderson hired a manager who got us instant promotion from Lge 1 on tight budgets & transfer restrictions. this complete over the top description by SB resembles the complete o.t.t descriptions Evatt had of certain players.... Greenidge & Santos...both speed merchants....Crellin.... "commands his area well. " www.bwfc.co.uk/news/2020/august/wanderers-land-highly-rated-keeper-on-loan/talk about hiring people in your own image.

I have a feeling Sharon is giving IE all the rope he needs to hang himself. It may well have been TP who saddled us with the majority of the current squad, we just don’t know but we do know going forward that it will be 100% Evatt, so if he fails after that, then he should be the next one through the door. I still hope IE can pull it off and make the necessary changes in January but I must admit that I’m really losing faith in his systems and his seeming inability to affect games, or change our approach. At some point we have to stick with someone who can hopefully take us forward so it might as well be IE as anyone else. We seem to have swapped boredom with Parky for frustration with Evatt but despite our ineptitude, we have at times looked really good. Let’s give IE the opportunity to bring in the players who can really deliver. It won’t be easy but one or two key positions strengthened may really make all the difference. I’m certainly hoping so.

www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/55284160here's one for Evatt to digest. Walsall 2-0 down at home.. at half time. makes 4 subs at HT. they win 4-3. one of the subs scoring 2. having not scored previously in the season. not flushed with great options on the bench..just giving them chances and a bit of encouragement.

That’s the problem though rtf, apart from Darcy, who else do we have on the bench that you’d have any confidence in making a positive difference if they were brought on? I imagine that he believed that Fonz might just have his 5 minutes of activity in the second half, or that Isgrove might just at some point actually pass to a White shirt or put in a decent cross. The truth is we’re just so desperately short in key areas that his options to change are limited and force him to stay with what he’s got, bar injuries. Two or 3 better quality players would make a big difference although I do think it’s more his reluctance to accept his system doesn’t work than the players we have. Until he has players who can deliver on it he needs to revert to a system they can play and bin his ideals. We have enough in the squad to play 442 or 433, which the players should understand better and I firmly believe if he did that we would be doing much better. I’d also like to see him at least experiment with what he does have. Give Darcy a run, why not? Try Santos in the Campo role and fill the gap with Taft or Greenidge. Stop Gilks passing to Santos in our penalty area, it’s just crazy and every team is now ready for it. Anyway, let’s see how it goes in January and if he’s still struggling then it’s a whole different matter.

Anyway, let’s see how it goes in January and if he’s still struggling then it’s a whole different matter. yes Darcy, and Hickman too i'd say..but he'd rather freeze him out. this guy reminds me so much of Freedman. the self-promotion. win and it's all down to him. lose and it's nothing to do with him. constant contradictions....has faith in all his players....yeah right. who would you rather see supporting attacks down the left side ..Delaney or Darcy. ? if you think Delaney....get yourself booked into the nearest asylum you can find. Darcy played perfectly well in lge 1 last year..now that plonker has deemed he's not fit for a minute at this level. similar story to the young keeper Alexander who wasn't deemed fit for even one of these EFL trophy games..even the dead rubber vs Newc. this latest one is a corker....blames tiredness....when a) they deliberately paid money to stay overnight to aid recovery & b) he makes 1 sub midweek & 1 on sat. even Freedman would squirm making that excuse in those circumstances. just the sort of thing DF would do ..deliberately sabotage results...just to make a point to board..give me more money. you might say that's extreme, but Darcy was there and he didn't pick him..we know what Darcy gives you...he's perpetual motion....energy..lively. agree with you re Gilks passing out. but this is Evatt's unswerving philosophy. agree on change to back 4. we have scored in a lot of games.. 90 % of recent games ,as i quote in my preview post to each game. all we need to do is defend better ..keep clean sheets or only concede 1, and you're picking up wins and draws & going on long unbeaten runs. Tutte is sorely missed. his strategy to replace him is just not working. Thomason has done well offensively but not defensively. Sarce also staying deeper to help out has just blunted the attack more. I said last week, if one player can't replace Tutte, get 2 to do the job.. play White and Thomason / or Darcy , or even Kioso. 3 in m/f with Sarce. Thomason has a good left foot....he could possibly do a job as a left sided midfielder in a m/f 4. look at this Jon Mellish at Carlisle...used to be a defender til only recently and a fairly failing one at that..now a goal -scoring midfielder www.thetimes.co.uk/article/how-jon-mellish-made-leap-from-liability-to-lethal-b8npbv32tgood managers find these solutions...and make average players look 10% better. bad managers make good players look 10% worse... playing them out of positions, and asking them things they're not comfy with. Big Sam could have thrown his toys out of the pram too... BOO hoo.....diddums, my squads' not perfect, i'm going to have to play Henrik Pedersen ...( a striker ) at left back ..... another very unlikely conversion. but most of the time , he did a perfectly decent job.

this 2nd Tranmere goal is a real weird one. say from 1.08 onwards. must have watched it 10+ times and still can't fully figure it out. interested if anyone got any different views on it. when Santos wins that header..you just think..ok..no danger. should Jones have continued his initial press towards the ball. he's perhaps put off by the runner that appears heading slight right. Sarce -who i have seen get some blame for it... was trying to cover the space left by Jones and Feeney's run in there. bit of blame to Thomason too. perhaps could have got back quicker into that Campo/Makalele type area screening the defence. that position 10 yards in front of the box is vital. someone has to be in it at all times. if someone gets dragged out of it..someone else HAS TO TAKE their place immediately. Big Sam knew the value of that role.... I don't know if people remember Faye as a centre back or a defensive mid. I clearly remember his games there... just found an old article on it. www.theboltonnews.co.uk/news/6223495.faye-makes-impact/another classic role conversion by BSA. looks unsuited for that role. big strapping lad. good in the air. we're not just talking championship opponents..we're talking Premier lge and all the quick & skilful playmakers operating in that "hole" . I remember collecting many a fantasy football clean sheet point for him when he was in that role, much to the chagrin of my OTHER Half , who always felt he'll not be suited and will just pick up yellow cards..caught out for being too slow and over-physical... but he didn't & i racked up many points for clean sheets with him patrolling in front of that back 4. should a centre back have stepped out perhaps ?. we had the numbers back. obviously Gilks could have done better too. hard to tell if there was a deflection or not from our angle.

Hickman certainly got one over the manager here. also proof that Matt Alexander does still exist. Could be reading too much into this but seems an odd atmosphere in the dome. What set up to be a bit of a fun drill runs really low on banter. Its deadly silent but some praise for "matty" making basic saves. Then when Evatt turns up its like the PE teacher in Kes. Im amazed he didnt retake his misses. Talk about taking it too seriously. If he wanted to score more points he should have put Crellin in nets. Found it a very odd, uncomfortable watch.

must have watched it 10+ times and still can't fully figure it out.
interested if anyone got any different views on it.-rtf above
I've had several looks at this and indeed the 3rd which has some similarities and at an intervening clip just to check movement and patterns when we have had the ball
I think Santos does well to head decisively, Thomasson is remote, Delaney a bit slow out and Sarcevic a tad deep but in my opinion none of these are the issue. It is as you say the Tranmere 18 who sprints from the half way line to make the extra man who makes all the difference to the movements of Jones and Sarcevic who track the runners and leave Morris free to continue.
So, where did he start from. He seems to be one of two men beside Doyle close to the centre circle. He leaves Doyle, the only bwfc man who could have tracked him and Doyle lets him go.
At this point in the game the selected team has just been changed. Brockbank has gone off, Crawford has come on, Jones has switched. To offset that Delfouneso has gone to the right and the free kick goes over him and he is watching it. Crawford has also gone to the right in the group of players. This may be deliberate to offset the loss of Jones but it does leave a gap in midfield because both Delfouneso and Crawford have gone over and we subsequently get outnumbered on the right once the ball is headed back that way and the defenders join in. It's pretty much what happened for the 3rd too.
To my mind the origins of this goal go back as quite a few have this year to the lack of clarity in the pairing of Delfouneso and Doyle on the one hand and inconsistency/laziness? of Crawford and Delfouneso.. Maybe here Crawford has listened to criticisms that he has held too central a position or has been instructed to stay on the right. Either way unless Delfouneso actually plays deeper and competes right, left or even centre alongside Doyle we have an imbalance.
In the intervening clip we find Delfouneso now on the left trying to move forward and we see Crawford's rather weak attempt on goal. So what exactly is Delfouneso's brief. To be on a flank- no matter which and what is Crawford's
I confess I can't figure it out. But what's for certain is that we seem to be playing one upfront (Doyle) and he is running everywhere, albeit not at the critical moment. On Tuesday he was deputed to impede Tozer's throws. But Delfouneso whose strength appears to be getting the ball deeper and carrying it and passing better than most plays no part in any kind of press or defensive activity except inward bound set pieces. I have long noted that you do not need freeze frame to capture Delfouneso. He seems to stand still a lot and to run towards players and then shuffle sideways on to pipe them aboard into midfield. There is no aggression whatsoever. But as often as not he is just absent
So, in sum we are a ten man team out of possession and if oppositions commit forward they will outnumber us and get runs on the back three. Up to a point by playing the ball wide most of the time and with Brockbank and Jones we offered little going forward but we were protected on the flanks not least because of Doyle, also Thomasson and Sarcevic and because we played deeper and risked little. The moment we try to bring Crawford on and take the game forward our critical Delfounesine weakness is illuminated and we get outnumbered on counter attacks, which is surely what happened here. We simply did not have the players who tracked the 18 or in position to hassle Morris. It's a whole team set up,and tactical problem of which I think we saw six examples v Port Vale. Put Kioso upfront alongside Doyle and drop Delfouneso until the 70 minute point would be one option.. using the fitter, more committed if lighter Darcy another or getting spomething from White or Comley and allowing Thomasson to play left in a Farrelly type role another. Any of these would lessen our vulnerability to counter attack as would of course Tutte, although he fades.

www.theboltonnews.co.uk/sport/18960815.bolton-boss-pinpoints-key-area-needs-strengthen-january/" We have to keep working with the players, doing the video analysis and showing them what is going wrong, show them what we expect,” he said. “But we have to improve the squad and make sure there are more players available to us.
“We might then be able to rotate a bit more, give some players rest and have a freshness when it is Saturday-Tuesday as it was this week.
“We haven’t got that at the moment, in my opinion.
“We have a squad and the ones out of the team, as I have said many times, have to do more to get into the team. It’s that simplea bit Freedman-esque some of these lines. the us and them attitude of that first bit. he's got it.. but players just too thick to get it. or can he not put it across to them ? awful tone. it's Xmas now..and you're just telling them what you expect . season started in Sept. not showing it in training now..no longer training like real madrid are they ? or is it that they know you won't give them the chance and get de-motivated. it took him ages to drop Crellin. and even longer to sub then finally drop Crawford. it's amazing how only 11 players seem to be doing it in training... WHAT A REMARKABLE COINCINDENCE ? . NOT 12. NOT EVEN 1 SUB. if only 10 showed up in training, would he only pick 10 for the match.always a good idea to talk down your squad players when you're hoping to shift them to other clubs.... come and take this player.... he won't try a leg ..lol not that i beleive that is the case. it's just not credible when he was perfectly capable of keeping Crellin in goal when he was a total liability... now all of a sudden.... bringing on an extra sub for 15 mins in an outfield position is going to make the roof fall in on us..any more than it already is doing !! it's all about empire- building. if they let me buy players..then i'll be able to make a whole further set of excuses of how these new players need time to settle etc.

Hasn't as yet dropped Delfouneso or even recently subbed him! It is a bit Freedman like. We move from Hill's oral dysentery to this, having tolerated the fluency of Lennon's Feeney idolatry and Coyle's vapid nonsense. Only really Parky in recent times ha struck the right notes or positioned himself reasonably, well even, to the media. Such a shame his tactics were so formulaic. Maybe one day we'll get something more intelligent?
