Should have been more than 3 I’m afraid, a number of poor performances but that said, a good win 3 more points, onward and upward. MoM for me was Baptiste two brilliant crosses, what a shame Kioso didn’t have the same composure.

It's a shame Tutte got injured early on as White is not an offensive answer, and Sarcevic wasn't at his best today. Crawford seems too fragile also which again brings me back to midfield weaknesses and lack of cohesion between defence and attack. But for Gilks Southend may well have pegged us back today, and I think we have to look at the game in that light in so far as without him and good support from Santos, Delaney and the ever-improving creative Baptiste we could have lost or drawn, particularly as Southend shaded most of the second half.

Not a 3-0 performance but we’ve got to happy with the points.
For some reason, we gave Southend loads of the ball. Thank goodness they are poor.
We set off well. Sarcevic should have scored early on but then we drifted into the start of the season type of performance. Loads of tippy tappy sideways passing but no threat.
Part of this came from an injury to Tutte who was replaced by White. White is so negative, nearly every pass was sideways or backwards.
Until Baptiste put in a lovely centre for Delfouneso to head in smack on half time.
Second half, Southend had most of the possession but really are toothless. Gilks made a couple of decent saves and Santos held the defence together.
Doyle, who had been quiet, took his chances well and we ran out comfortable.
Not a great performance but a good result.
Marks:-
Gilks - 7 Saved well when needed and, yet again, organised the defence so well
Kioso - 7 Some decent runs
Jones - 6 OK but I wish he would shoot when the chance comes instead of cutting back
Baptiste - 8 Two fabulous assists and more good defending
Santos - 8 The usual solid performance
Delaney - 6 A couple of iffy moments but part of a good defence
Tutte Injured
Sarcevic - 5 Not quite at it today. Maybe if he had scored early on, it would have been OK
Crawford - 5 Hard to remember any accurate forward passes. So weak in the challenge – he just gets knocked off it too easily
Delfouneso - 6 Nice goal. He could have had more if he could learn to stay onside
Doyle - 6 Relatively quiet then 2 goals.
Isgrove - 6 OK
White - 5 He is much too defensive to me. Every pass either sideways or backwards.

good result. not good performance. 6's all round.except Baptiste MOM 7.5. & Jones & Crawford 5's. only 4 shots on target & you score 3 goals. I predicted 2-0, so not far off.
another clean sheet which is good. Gary Henshaw on co-commentary made the good point...do we really need 3 centre backs against 1 forward in Goodship. Gary kept wanting Delaney to run forward...but I DON'T agree with that part. i just don't feel he's a credible threat. Santos and Baptiste are better getting forward. Santos obviously the better passer. Baptiste better crosser & better at making runs and getting on the end of things. Delaney is not going to cross or be the best short passer, or... dribbler .
Kioso had decent energy, but again few crosses. Jones was pretty anonymous. this the type of game where that wide left player has got to be a real threat...crosses, shots, beating people. he can't do it. decent crosser when playing on the right, but even so, probably not enough in a game like this, when you've got the ball a fair bit of the time and need to cut through them more.
hopefully Isgrove will be fit enough to play more minutes soon...and he could be an option on that left side for this type of game.

You would think that 3-0, after all this time since a comparable effort, would be a source of great delight, but it was ever such a frustrating game to watch. So many of our players favour a slow tempo and ponderous possession. It wasn't necessary today. Every time anyone surged forward we had space and chances. Late on Kioso was breaking through regularly but passing behind players twice.
In the final analysis we won today because of strong defence, the occasional surging run, two excellent Baptiste crosses and because Doyle and Delfouneso we have two individuals(not a pair alas) who are good opportunists. The penalty sealed the game. The angle wasn't good on ifollow but it looked soft from the one we had.
There has been speculation in the week about transfers. I think we saw again today that White much as Crellin and Comley are a good bit beneath the standard of the others in so far as a) Gilks is better , even if show-boating a bit today, than Crellin- one good first half save the latter might not have made. White and Comley just always play loosely, backwards or side to side and kill forward momentum. This is exaggerated by Delaney's body shape in receipt of the ball, being reminiscent of Andy Taylor. He can slide a pass down the wing but seldom does, he can run forward but seldom does. I quite like what Jones does defensively and even on occasion going forward but most of the time his selection crates a left sided road block of negativity.
It's a bit better on the right. Kioso frustrates but he competes and he has a bit of speed if negligible close control. I'd love to see him in the centre alongside Doyle some of the time. Also, and it may take Evatt a while to realise this but Isgrove is a cut above the rest, especially on the right wing-- he has a touch of the postman about him and it was a really good effort that led to an offside tap in.
Crawford is , well, Crawford. Born to disappoint, he succeeds in that mission. Time and time he makes the wrong choices, crosses poorly, passes back to the opposition or picks out defenders with forward passes. Every now and then he does something good and earns a reprieve from the hook but we must find a creative midfielder. Both Darcy and from what I saw Thomasson are much more alert and reliable. Could Crawford improve? I'm not sure.
There is then Delfouneso. he of the poor body language and modest effort. Freeze frame any section and he will be spectating.. But at least he is a threat going forward with the ball at his feet. He has good close skills and at this level can take a goal. A shame he and Doyle are so ill-suited but at this level he's just about a strength. His contributions though are just so occasional. We need back up here because without him or Doyle we may be toothless. Doyle is honest enough, does lots of running and is beginning to get his goals.
Sarcevic today, on the ball was woeful. Everything went wrong and he looked flat footed but without his cover play and back tackling our defence would not be so secure.
At this level there's no denying that Santos is a rock. He is also a force when he strides forward. I still worry when he is turned but he's a whole lot better with Gilks pulling his strings and we would have to say that, even though Southend were better in attack than defence he mopped up all threats. It's great to see opponents bouncing off him. I'm not sure we have seen that since Taggart-- albeit at a higher level in his case. Maybe Ngotty- not many outmuscled him
So 3-0 onward and upward but for all that some players need motivating. All too often tempo is poor.
Gilks 7 Baptiste 8 Santoss 8 Delaney 6 Tutte (4 withdrawn but quite a loss) White 3 Crawford 3 Kioso 6 Jones 6 Sarcevic 5 ( what a miss early on) Doyle 7 Delfouneso 5 Isgrove ( Cameo but 7), Darcy too little time to evaluate)

I wondered why Evatt waited so long to sub him. I thought he was carrying an injury? Surely best to give more playing time to Darcy? Watching the Peterboro Chorley game. Good high tempo first half with Chorley 1-0 down from a good strike. But... Chorley have hit the upright twice. I think we'd struggle against this lot. Connor Hall for Chorley and Beevers for Peterboro...

I’m still convinced that if we’d stuck with Connor Hall and given the lad a chance he would have come good for us. He’s a natural goalscorer and just what we need alongside Doyle. Maybe didn’t have the right algorithms?

whites, you should have watched the game, it was brill. No letting up throughout the whole 90 mins, played at a consistent pace.
Chorley play a good passing game, but not side to side, or backwards... good balls into channels in the 18 yard box.
They played with confidence after they grew into the game. Not only that, coming from behind from an excellent strike early in the first half.
All credit to them, they made P'boro look second rate and are on a good cup run. Already beat Wigan.
The h/lights are on youtube, but it gives no indication of how the game was played.
I don't know if you lot have to pay a tenner to watch the whites, but I've stopped doing it. It's $12 for me to watch it now, went up $3, so I use the money on bet365. I get to watch a live game, or two and today justified it.

It’s good to see Chorley doing so well wots and I don’t know if we can get it here or not, but of course I was watching Wanderers anyway. Obviously this game was free as a ST holder but so far I’ve watched every game and happily paid the £10 when they are away. Anyway, if your luck on bet365 goes pear shaped there’s still just a spot in my greenhouse for you between the geraniums and agapanthus! 😉

just a quickie. for our 3rd goal. I noticed Isgrove played the key defence splitting pass.
at 1.50 in the vid. it takes out 4 Southend players.
