good result. will take that. first win when having more than 50% possession. I did predict a 1-0 win... so i'll claim that 1 goal margin win .
bit surprised we didn't throw another sub on..maybe Darcy. but the more subs get thrown on, the bigger the injury time will. can see some really long injury time one of these days.
didn't really have to hit the heights. steady performance. 6's & 7's really for player ratings. not sure if anyone deserved an 8. but no-one that bad either...Delf being the one exception perhaps for me. Delf seemed to go from anonymous first half..to annoying errors in 2nd half..giving away the ball, and attacks breaking down on him.
poor side Stevenage so don't read too much into it. 7 shots on target for us... 2 let in.. so another 5 saves for their keeper. he's their best player. 3 shots on target for Doyle. good to keep him in the goals and him look more like the player we expected him to be.

We are just not taking complete control of games and allowing mediocre opponents back in. More control needed in midfield. Evatt needs to try something different, and may need to look closer at the free role he is allowing Sarcevic. Having said that we missed a couple of easy chances today, and owe much to a great save by Gilks in the second half.

Yet again some very inconsistent performances against a rather toothless Stevenage. I find it very frustrating to watch. There are nuggets of play when you think we are good enough to impose ourselves. The second goal had much to commend it. A crisp forward pass launched a breakaway, Jones slipped through, hit a perfect pass to Crawford and a perfect left foot shot. It looked so easy that Delfouneso looked rather bored with its ease as he ambled back.
But at other times we played poor final balls or just bad passes. Crawford as ever exists to disappoint and even though he ran well and linked up two or three excellent moves, at other times he brought promising positions to a shuddering halt by not just loose passes but passes deliberately made to opponents or so you would think. And in this he wasn't alone. Sarcevic strong in possession and committed all too often gave it away as did Doyle. Delfouneso and Doyle don't function well together, I think we know that by now but after winning a few early headers all Delfouneso seemed to do was hold the ball too long. He perked for a moment or two in the second and won a contested ball in the corner and all but fashioned a chance but then vanished until substituted.
I think Jones and Kioso shuttled back and forth quite well but playing them in that role means we have next to no craft or capacity to beat a full back or flight a cross so from them our best prospect is usually a scudding ball which as often as not finds defenders. Tutte had a really good first half but as ever more or less vanished in the second, so although he and Crawford were more or less in the ascendancy in the first half it was left to Sarcevic to make most of the tackles in the second.
Doyle's was a good opportunistic opener but in the end we won that game via the solidity of the back three. It was strange but we had such aerial dominance that it seemed they couldn't or wouldn't score. If there were concerns it was probably long -term lest dementia should beckon. Head, head, head ,head ,head.. Delaney must have headed 30 bals and Santos not many fewer, even Baptiste who had a solid game and got forward quite sensibly headed a few. It was only when Delaney made a pig's ear of things just before half time and the centre halves didn't react that Stevenage got near.. In the second a couple of Gilks saves bailed us out and stupidly conceded free kicks gave us pause. Crellin in goal and we probably lose this game?
Anyway, Miller came on and again disappointed but Isgrove improved things when taking over form the spent Crawford and we managed the last seven minutes or so well to take the points.. Squeaky bum time is supposed to be the last few minutes. Why does it have to be an entire half?
Gilks 8 Baptiste 7 Santos 8 Delaney 6 Kioso 5 Jones 6 Crawford 5 Tutte 6 Sarcevic 6 Doyle 6 Delfouneso 3 Miller 3 Isgrove 4

While I take your point 63 about a new strong man up front, I really feel the main problem is midfield possession and support for Sarcevic. Today I would have at least expected Thomason to be on the bench and I still look for more experience for Riley. I know what you mean Kenglo but I feel we have enough in midfield to do better but all that work is just wasted if we haven’t got anybody who can finish. Doyle is the best we’ve got but he can’t do it all on his own and I’m afraid Delfouneso isn’t going to do much. Sarcevic and Ali should be able to contribute and probably Darcy too if he gets the chance but I’ve given up on us getting much from our defenders. Again today we had numerous opportunities but other than Doyle again we have nobody with a nose for a goal and if we’re going to succeed this season that needs to change. Once again today we surrendered a good winning position by failing to finish a team off and to be honest we’re lucky to come away with the points.

A great result.
A very good first 40 minutes and then a bit desperate. We were definitely hanging on.
We moved the ball well and looked likely to score so when Doyle scored it was deserved.
Stevenage really had nothing and the goal from Crawford was brilliant, starting with a Baptiste pass out of defence and numerous good passes and a good finish.
We were so in control we should have had more but our use of the ball in the final 20 yards was just not precise enough but we were well on top.
Then Delaney messed up badly and Stevenage were back in the game.
Second half was much more scrappy and we had some desperate defending.
Gilks saved a straight forward shot and then an excellent tip over when I thought they had scored.
We still had loads of the ball but when we reached their penalty area, it all became scrappy and we couldn’t finish.
I was relieved at the final whistle but there had been some very good play so well done
Marks:-
Gilks - 7 Just 2 saves and both well made.
Kioso - 7 Some good running/attacking
Jones - 6 Good
Baptiste - 7 A good performance
Santos - 7 Good again
Delaney - 5 Good for 40 mins, then a mistake and then problems
Tutte - 6 Steady
Sarcevic - 7 Another solid performance
Crawford - 6 First half would have been a 7 or 8 but 2nd half, he was poor. The save that Gilks made in 2nd half was down to him just being fast asleep and leaving his man
Delfouneso - 5 Very average today apart from a couple of flick on headers.
Doyle - 7 Took his goal well. Could have had a couple more
Isgrove - 6 Steady in midfield when he came on
Miller - 6

Jones is a definite upgrade on Brockbank on that left side. although any decent opposition manager should get his defenders to watch more prep vids as he ALWAYS just checks in on his RIGHT foot.

The narrative that we have is that we start really badly and get better and better. I did think this season would be as predictable as a sports film montage. What i'm actually seeing is just games being won, lost or drawn in isolation.
Like the games themselves theres definitely good periods, then really poor periods and there doesnt seem to be a reason.
Thats 3 wins on the bounce but in all honesty i'm not any more convinced we'll win our next game as in September when we lost the games.
We seem wishy washy. Maybe thats harsh but I just dont see the click yet.

I know what you mean OM, it’s frustrating because in almost every game now, we play some cracking stuff but then for some reason just seem to take the foot off, like we did again today. Five minutes before half time we were well on top and coasting but one misjudgement later we conceded and it appeared to completely knock the stuffing out of us. I expected us to come out after half time fired up again but just as was the case against Bradford, we looked nervy and hesitant. Like you I fear every game because you never know which team will turn up. That said, we are getting better overall so hopefully the consistency will come before too long?
