Well, the Wigan result brought us down to earth, albeit Evatt fielded a youngish side.
Are the youngsters up to scratch? Was Adam the trialist who scored the penalty in the Accy friendly?
I said before that it isn't going to be the cakewalk that some have made out. Despite the names of the other teams whites, I think it's going to be a bit of a slog. I think Salford were riding on a high last season and saw how difficult it can be.
I'm still positive about the season, but my feeling is that we'll be more of being on the edge of the playoffs rather than auto promo.

Well it’s all about opinions wots. In truth none of us know how the seasons going to go but I’d have been more concerned if it had been our projected first team that got battered by Wigan than our academy team, although we still should have done better. I just can’t see us not being at the top all seSon because the quality in L2 really is poor from what I witnessed on Quest last season and also what we’ve seen from L1 which isn’t much better. There aren’t any stand out teams in there, including Salford, although I do expect them to be up there as well because they already have a settled side plus some good imports. We still need to make one or two more quality signings yet, especially a goal scorer, for when Doyle and Delfouneso are missing, which is bound to happen over the season. You can fit people around other positions but strikers are irreplaceable and we need at least one more, especially now Politics missing. Anyway, let’s see how they get on at Crewe tomorrow because that will likely be the side IE puts out against Bradford.

Well, we didn't get on at Crewe whites. Lost 3-0 at home.
I like to think that this is just getting it all organized seeing as how we have a lot of new 'uns.
I'm not as confident as you are about the new season. I still say our best will be on the edge of the playoff places. Let's not underestimate our task just because the names of the teams don't have a history such as ours.

We did our good business early doors and that set a statement. Exclude Fonz and the next dozen players are unknown, free, non league and we're all expecting them to the diamonds.
As groucho said "why would i want to be in any club that would have me as a member?" Why would you join a relegated L2 team if you were that good, or rather why havent you been picked up already?
This season i expect frustration. But i feel we will be improving month by month and think we will be there. Its a fairly forgiving league to get out. 3 auto and a playoff. Play off must be minimum.
But surely we need an away kit soon? Lucky we didnt draw Preston away or we'd be playing in skins.

Actually, reports suggest we did ok for the majority of the game against Alex and had chances but didn’t take them. The goals we conceded were avoidable and as the defence works together more I’m sure they’ll sort those out. What concerned me most was the performance of Crellin. I had my doubts about a 21 year old keeper from the start and after that performance it concerns me even more. A good defence can only be good if it has confidence in the keeper and on that performance, despite a couple of good saves, I’m worried. I expect Alexander to be loaned out so maybe Gilks will be preferred if he doesn’t show improvement. IE May have confidence in his future but this is now and we don’t have time to be nurturing other teams players. Let’s hope that was just a blip but we have a couple of weeks yet to improve so maybe by the first League game well have ironed the problems out and added a couple of more experienced players to the squad. I’d just love Alf and Charlie Adam but what chance?

That was my fear that we'd be victim to smash and grab defeats.
I dont know if it makes me a dinosaur but cant stand this playing out from the back. Goalkeeper passes it 5 meters to a centre back, he passes it back and then usually the centre back launches it.
Ive not seen a team score from thier goal kicks but seen plenty concede or at least concede possession. Was encouraged to hear Evatt say he will go direct if thats called for.

Have to take into account whites' statement that we did ok, but didn't take our chances. Well, that's what the game is all about. How you win shows the weaknesses in the losing team. So, if it's launched, a set piece, or played out from the back, who cares. lol
I do have reservations, as does whites, with us fielding a goalkeeper who is a loanee. Doesn't make sense to me. Were there no other keepers available?
I think we'll be managing with smash and grab "wins" Oom. I still don't see us walking this league. Confidence was high in the early pre-season games, but the last two were an eye opener, or 'early warning' that things won't be easy.
You're not a dinosaur with your thinking either. Players have to be super fit to play the ball out from the back. We'll see how that works during the season. Of course Evatt has to mix the tactics up during a game. If playing it out from the back doesn't work, then get the ball in and around the box by whatever means and keep the opposition under pressure.
It always amused me that BSA's teams were always referred to as long ball teams, despite us having some of the world's best players, all in the same team, yet S. Gerrard's long balls became known as the long pass. lol
So, if Evatt mixes it up tactically then I wouldn't have any problem with that, so long as we get positive results. I don't want to hear 'we can learn from that' after poor defeats and I put the Crewe game down as a poor defeat. It's only last season they were in Lge 2, so they aren't too many miles over and above.

I think part of our problem is that we don’t really know any of these players, bar one or two, how they play and whether they’re up to this level of football, since most have come from non league or lowly clubs. Add to that that they have to be blended into a team and IE has his work cut out and I suppose even he doesn’t really know how the players will do. It is a concern that the only two proper teams we’ve played we have lost to but at least we put up a decent show against Crewe. We can still bring in 3 or 4 players yet so I’m expecting a bit more experience to strengthen the squad. You don’t have to be a sprinter to play pass and move football, technique and experience can make up for a little lack of pace and on that it’s a shame Charlie Adam didn’t decide to stay but someone like that would be an asset to the younger players. For me though we still need another striker because we are a bit light in that department. Alf would be great but it seems unlikely and to be fair I’ve not heard that he really is back or been chased by anyone anyway. Bradford will give us a better test to be fair because that’s the level we’re at so a poor performance against them would tell us a lot more about how we’ll do. I’m actually still confident we will do well but maybe that’s just wishful thinking because it’s not based on anything other than hope!
