Keith Hill says that the season starts here! We'll see at the end of the season how important that point that the kids got against Coventry will be. But no disputing that it's a new era. I'm looking forward to the match reports, especially the one from whites 63. I hope it's better than watching paint dry... lol, the match, I mean, not the report. I was at Millmoor many moons ago and I think it was a 2-2 draw. I'll go for the draw again. 1-1 though. COYW's

I'll be there tomorrow hopefully we will do the team proud and the team will do us proud. I'm not expecting us to go out and win but by gum we will play football and try that's all we want and maybe score a goal. COYWM

Really looking forward to this game.
My first away game of the season.
It’s probably asking a lot for all the new faces to hit it off in their first game
but
- I expect us to score our first goal(s) of the season
- I expect to see attacking positive football
- I know we will have tremendous support
Fingers crossed – a point at least.

Hard to predict with so littlw knowledge of the team. Still imagine the odds to be fairly long for a team of strangers.
Im really hoping we see Politic amongst the new faces.

Well after a cracking start the Whites are getting ripped to pieces at the back, far too open and not picking up players at all. Now 2-1 down and unless KH sorts this out at HT I can see another 5 against here. Hope for better in the second half.

If we stay up, or go down, it wont be on goal difference thats for sure so in a way its irrelevant if we lost 6-1, 1-0 or 13-3 but thats disappointing.

A strange game, which mirrored so many we’ve seen this season. A very bright start, presumably the new players still had a bit of gas in the tank then. But defensive errors contributed to us losing the lead and conceding three by half time. Despite the deficit, at half time I still thought we had it in us to trouble Rotherham. In fact, I know it may sound fanciful, but, apart from the obvious chasm in quality, I thought Bolton had played a bit like Kosovo did in the week. Enterprising going forward, but all at sea defensively and leaving huge gaps to be exploited ( which Rotherham learned to do) .
Hopes were dashed pretty quickly with more goals for Rotherham. I’d say at least four of the six were due to very poor mistakes on our part. I know the players haven’t played much, but, really, they should have done better. Matthews looks shell shocked and should not play on Tuesday. Bridcutt bravely wanted the ball all the time but is very rusty, as are Emmanual, Wright, Chicksen and Crawford. Verlinden has class, but is maybe a bit lightweight.
On Hill’s debut, I’m not sure what to think. Was Brockbank injured? He would have surely been better than an obviously unfit Emmanuel or his deputy for a while Lowe. Why did he only use two of the subs when many of our players were out on their feet? And on what looked a warm afternoon. Why were two of the players who’d at least played some games this season subsituted ? ( OK, Murphy I get. He’s pathetic) Why play with no striker at all? Do we not look a bit small and delicate for this league?
While there are certainly a lot of questions, I found the first quarter a refreshing change from Parky’s dull dross. Let the squad settle, get properly match fit, get in a target man who can hold up the ball ( didn’t we get two on deadline day?), get more organised and used to one another and let Hill learn who are his best 11. It will take time, but I’m not altogether downhearted.

That no matter what anyone says that was very disappointing I didn't expect to win but equally I didn't think we would get thumped 6-1. I know that it will take time but come on not 6-1 I never saw that coming surly we are not that bad. COYWM

Well, mixed emotions from that performance.
Great to see the start of the “way back” but what a dreadful performance from a number of so-called experienced players.
I was surprised at the team. I assume the lack of strikers was down to match fitness but don’t know. I didn’t know about Chicksen till they read the side out. It meant though that we played Crawford as the lone striker with Wear behind him.
An incredible start with Verlinden earning a corner and then scoring with a spectacular shot from the by-line.
There was some decent neat passing in the first half but defensively we were wide open.
Our lead wouldn’t last though. Initially, we had trouble in the full back position where Rotherham tore us apart. There was no support for the full backs. But then the slackness in central defence started to slow. The ball just stayed in our area with no one able to clear and inevitably goals went in.
The defending really was amateurish. We could – probably should – have conceded double figures today, our defence was that poor. When you consider that the central defenders were vastly experience, we were a shambles.
1 -1 came when their midfield player just ran into the box, beat a couple of slow challenges and curled it in.
Hobbs then cleared off the line when Matthews messed up a punched clearance
2-1 came Murphy & Hobbs stood and watched a ball come into the area, their turn and shoot with no attempt to block.
When it was 2-1, Verlinden missed a glorious chance when Rotherham’s defence passed straight to him only for him to shoot wide.
3-1 came when we failed on about 3 times to clear the ball following a corner. The ball was played in again. Defence stood still, Rotherham player dived, headed and scored
4-1 came from another header – simple lack of marking.
5-1 was a terrible attempted clearance from either Murphy or Wright who cleared straight to a player on the edge of the area.
6-1 Hobbs sliced a clearance onto the post, then swung at the loose ball and gave it straight to a Rotherham player to tap in.
We would have conceded many many more but for the fact that the Rotherham players wanted to score wonder goals instead of passing.
The manager changed the formation a few times. Lowe went to full back and Emmanuel as right midfield, Politic went to no 10 and then finished playing as the lone striker.
But nothing worked
It was a really dreadful performance.
One positive though – there was very little hoofball. We passed the ball on the floor.
Marks:-
Matthews - 3 Couldn’t really be blamed for the goals but he had no dominance of his area. It was mad panic on too many occasions when he could have organised and cleared things better. He looks shell-shocked to me.
Emmanuel - 4 Caught a few times early on. Looks like he likes to get forward.
Chicksen - 4 I think he may eventually be OK but he looked desperately short of match fitness.
Hobbs - 2 Terrible. So slow to react to things.
Wright - 2 Like Hobbs, very poor. The fact that they scored from crosses very easily says it all. Very poor.
Bridcutt - 4 Started reasonably well but then kept getting caught. Totally dominated second half.
Murphy - 3 He started OK with 2 early crunching tackles but then just disappeared.
Politic - 4 Looked OK in first half. One good run and shot and one ridiculous shot from halfway line which dribbled through to the keeper.
Wear - 3 Substituted early on. Played as a no 10 but it didn’t work.
Crawford - 4 Played as the lone striker – is he a striker? Decent first half. Like all his colleagues, an anonymous 2nd half.
Verlinden - 3 Good goal but I can see why managers don’t trust him. Rarely helped his full back out which left Chicksen being overrun. How many times was he offside? Missed a wonderful chance to make it 2-2.
Lowe - 4 Put himself about a lot – first at full back, then midfield but he is an average player.
Darcy - 3 Half an hour but by the time he got on, the team were dead.

I understand its too early to judge, were months behind teams that have had a regular preseason and we wont be at the races. But if we enter this culture of "we have a club everything else is irrelevant" then i dont get that. As a fan you surely need to go with an element that you can be competative. If youve been beaten by 5 goals you should be allowed to disect and question decisions even at this stage.
For instance my biggest question is should alnwick now get a chance again. Very little in it between the two and Matthews has dropped a few clangers to say the least.

I think our new managers forgot one thing in making their signings and then naming this team, which is hat the most essential ingredient of any team is defence. I go back to the days of Ian Greaves, through Toddy and Rioch to Big Sam...all made it an imperative to get clean sheets and be a bit boring at first. If you can start by doing that you can then start to build your atacking plans onto it. It is obvious also from today's perfprmance that so many of this team were not yet match-fit. Although your have to play a few games to reach full fitness, this team selection made for a gung-ho approach, and this just will not do !!
