“Wolves in the dark neck bands have plenty at stake when they kick off against the other Wanderers, Bolton, for Wolves are top of the league.....”
Inspirational commentary from the FA Cup Round 6 1958, a game in which we won 2-1 in front of a packed crowd
Oh for a bit of that tomorrow, but alas, after making yet another half dozen PP changes, the Wolves will dish out the same as the Lions did a week or so ago 😞
0-2

SAM's prediction Home win 24% Draw 25% Away win 51%
SAM, the Sports Analytics Machine, is a super-computer built by @profianmchale of the University of Liverpool. Match facts
Bolton are unbeaten in their last 10 home matches against Wolves in all competitions since a 2-1 defeat in the FA Cup in January 1999 (W6 D4).
Wolves are looking to complete an English Football League double over the Trotters for the first time since the 1993-94 season.
Zach Clough scored three goals in two Championship appearances against Wolves for Bolton, with all three goals coming at the Macron Stadium.
Wolves need just five points from their last three games to become the seventh second-tier side to win 100+ points in a single season (adjusting 3 points/win). In only one previous season have the Black Country side won 100+ points in a single season (103 in 2013-14 in the third tier).
Phil Parkinson has lost his last four league matches against Wolves, last beating them in his first meeting against them in November 2006 as Hull manager.
Two of the five Championship players to provide 10+ assists this season play for Wolves (Barry Douglas 14, Ivan Cavaleiro 12).

I am of the same opinion.
If only we could pull off something like the Villa, Cardiff, Bristol results but I fear Wolves are just too good.
We will pack our defence/midfield and have 25% possession. Please prove me wrong! A 2-0 defeat for me too!
Note that Sunderland play Burton.
If Burton win, they will be 2 points behind and play us at home next week.
We could be next to bottom with one game to play.

That's a scary thought David. I was only thinking today that Barnsley have a tough home game against Brentford (play off hopefuls) and the remaining are all away Derby(promotion hopefuls), Leeds(localish rivals) and Forest away. Best chance they have at 3 points is Forest away and we have them at home! So surely if they can win, so can we?
The reason I'm not as worried about the Burton predicament is that it would require them to win back to back games. Have they done that all season? Are they on form? They're down at the bottom because they rarely win so asking them to get 6 points is a big ask.
Always wrong to second guess the games at this time of the season.
I've no idea about tomorrow but I would be telling Sami Ameobi, Pratley and Henry that they need to cover ground- can't have any passengers tomorrow.

If we don’t score a goal within the first 15 mins, that would, in my opinion, be our only chance of a point at the very least... What am I saying!!!!!!! I’m being fair in my opening prediction of a 2-0 defeat but if we could at least register a goal early on it might just catch them off guard where we could push on to go for a second but this is a PP side we’re talking about and after Noone’s positive contribution at Barnsley, he’ll no doubt drop to the bench just to confuse all and sundry

Reduced to listening to this today, as I’m visiting family in the UK. For me, I think the key will be to get in their face early on. Hard, but not risking early cards. I don’t think, with a PL future guaranteed, they’d want to risk it. Big Sam guesting for a day would set things up for three points. Alas, Parky is no Big Sam.

Embarrassing Poor SJM what would he make of this Birmingham steal a march with a better goal difference
So far, PP’s side have given the Wolves 9 goals at 4-0 down 15 to go 😞😞

What's to say? If I raise the enthusiasm for a line or two it's more than my team did.
Jaded, unfit, uncompetitive and negatively led.
We were okish for a while but once Alnwick spilled Afobe's shot and palmed it out to the scorer that was that. We missed a couple of chances from Morais free kicks ( Henry and Beevers) and threatened no more. Our manager, arms folded, looked 8 after the first goal and as usual didn't get going in the 2nd half.
Of course they are good, outstanding at this level but they weren't Man City or Barcelona. We played as if they were. We are just too slow and unfit. Afobe looked good. Not sure Clough will bulk up like him.
Al nwick 0 Flanagan 0 Wheater 2 Beevers 2 Robinson 3. Henry 3 Pratley 3 Buckley 1 Morais 5 Le Fondre 6 Ameobi 5

Thing I am most disappointed about is that block tackles were lost in the build up for at least 3 of the goals. Doesn't take any great skill to win that sort of tackle just determination, strength and a little bit of luck. This isn't the first time lost tackles have lead to a goal.
Besides the above Alnwick should have done better with the first and the ref should have done better with the clear push on Robinson. I can't see where our next goal is coming from let alone our next win.

Another absolutely awful, gutless display.
We all expected to lose but to lie down against a Wolves team that didn’t get out of 2nd gear is shocking.
We lined up 4-3-3 but almost immediately it became 6-2-2. The manager selected 2 wingers in Buckley and Morais and then played them so deep. They played as full backs covering the Wolves wing backs. We all knew we would lose so why not make an effort to attack – we just played 100% negative with everyone bar Ameobi and Le Fondre back defending and it was awful.
Having said that, we had a decent first 15 minutes. Our attacking came from a number of free kicks that Wolves readily conceded. From one Pratley had a chance but headed weakly and then from another Beevers just fail to get a head on the ball.
All our hopes came to an end after 15 minutes when Afobe just outskillde Wheater and ran towards the box without challenge. He got a decent shot in which Alnwick saved but couldn’t hold. The ball spun loose and the defensive Morais should have cleared but he was too slow and Wolves’ wingback hit it in. Central defence was initially at fault, Alnwick made a hash of the shot and Morais was asleep.
The rest of the half meandered. Wolves rarely broke sweat but controlled it easily. We had 2 half hit attempts on goal which Ruddy could have wafted away and that seemed it. In the final minute of the half, yet again our central defenders slept. The Wolves keeper hit a long high ball, Afobe got between Wheater and Beevers, took it down, rounded Alnwick who recklessly charged out and scored. An awful defensive mess.
The game was now dead and the only hope we had was that our goal difference wouldn’t be battered.
It was.
Costa, Wolves’ right winger drifted in from the right beating Robinson. He just waved as he passed Henry who made no effort to stop him and we had 6 men back against 3 but they just flicked the ball through to a runner past our static defence and it was 3-0.
I haven’t got the faintest what happened for the 4th goal. We twice had easy chances to clear it but couldn’t and someone (who?) committed a foul for a penalty.
Thank goodness Wolves declared then as they were trouncing us,
As I said, they never got out of 2nd gear – it was so easy for them.
I did not expect any points out of this match but the performance was shocking.
The manager’s tactics were shocking – hoofball to Le Fondre continued.
Our passing ability was dire – we endlessly gave the ball away.
RELEGATION WRITTEN ALL OVER THAT PERFORMANCE.
As I said in an earlier post, if Burton beat us next week they pass us.
What tactics will he come up with? Will he play defensive and hope to grab something or play as per 2nd half against Barnsley and actually attack.
I despair.
Alnwick - 5 Let the ball slip from a not too difficult save for the first goal but Wheater and Morais share responsibility. Beaten too easily for 2nd goal. A good save from a header from a corner in first half.
Flanagan - 3 Hopeless. Not a very good defender and non-existent in any sort of attacking role.
Wheater - 3 Awkward and clumsy. Should have prevented shot for first goal. Out of his depth.
Beevers - 2 Two awful early mistakes almost cost us and was endlessly beaten. He and Wheater badly at fault for 2nd goal.
Robinson - 4 Best of a bad back 4. Got caught numerous times but at least attempted some positive forward play.
Henry - 1 Dreadful. Wolves just ran around him. His passing was abysmal. Wolves 3rd goal came from Costa just running straight past him without a challenge.
Morais - 3 Played so deep it was ridiculous. Couple of good early free kicks then his distribution sunk along with the team.
Pratley - 2 Just fouled and won fouls – his typical game. Had a header chance at 0-0 which he fluffed.
Ameobi - 3 Little danger. It is pointless playing him as a target man as he rarely wins anything.
Buckley - 2 Like Morais, played so deep. He was weak and totally ineffective.
Le Fondre - 4 At least he tried. Little or no service to him.
Noone - 2 Nothing from after he came on.
Vela - 2 Anonymous.
Clough - 2 Nothing.
Manager - 1 Appalling defensive attitude. We knew we would lose but to play 2 wingers as auxiliary full backs is shocking.

Yes Wolves are good, yes Millwall are doing well, Birmingham on the up, didn't Preston play well? Come on. Let's face facts. We are allowing teams to come and have things all their own way.
I don't want to scapegoat any players but why bring Buckley and Flanagan back? Neither have done well for us in truth. Why not try something else. Same bench.
It's pathetic that we can't make out mind up what the hell our best team is? 1 point from the pivotal time. Please, please gardening leave.

A disappointing, lack-lustre performance after the early part of the game, I hope Barnsley and Burton show similar failings in the next week otherwise things will look seriously bleak on May 6th. Somehow the spirit, effort and skill levels shown in the Cardiff, Bristol and Villa wins need rekindling for the final 2 matches but I'm not sure how given today's performance... however good Wolves were, and well done to them for a great season, the lack of fight and the prevailing body language of many players, and the manager, is a real cause for concern.
