Ok here goes...maybe a bit long winded. The way we play 3 at the back is that the 3 *stretch * across the back leaving big spaces between them for the ball to be played into the space for their forwards to run into, neither left or right of the 3 can cover the middle player as they have to cover for the wing backs when/if they get forward. Our *wing backs* when they do defend give us 5 at the back which surrenders midfield. When we do get the ball our midfield is quickly closed down as they usually have an extra man, which means the ball gets passed backwards and all hope of a counter attack dissappears. Because of this we knock the ball long to Madine,so obviously our oppenents know what our tactics are before we even kick off! As long as Madine is in the team this is how we will play all season, doesnt matter if he has a good game by being on the pitch he dictates the way we play! Its been proved over and over again that passing teams win games...our tactics are Prehistoric! Good shout Grud And even Gary Rowett mentioned that when he was interviewed on that Channel 5 Goals programme last night

I've had a quick look at Channel 5 highlights and now read other's comments. As ever comments are incisive and for example I think the grud gets our system frailties pretty much spot on-so alas did Gary Rowett. But we have had some footballing lessons in early season most recent years. August games are not necessarily a guide to how a season will play out and it's way too early to reach a view re how PP will fare in this league.
It's not though too early to see how EPL money has created a massive distortion in the potential achievement of championship teams and for every one with parachute money who falls because of all the long contract and individuality problems we experienced there will be others who gradually stabilise and become more competitive and no doubt one or two who just bounce back
In our case we seem to be hamstrung by the embargo in terms of loan duration and we are restricted to 23 players which prevents some younger players turning out. And we have injuries-as will all teams. A few thoughts from having seen three games two away and one home- the other I missed being seen live on TV
Karacan could be our best player. At Birmingham he was a terrier. He moves forward where he can.. He plays triangles where he can. He has a deft touch when passing and can as we saw last season v Peterboro get into the box He lacks a bit of speed. He is not yet at full fitness Yesterday nothing quite went right for him but he didn't hide. If you watch him closely especially at away games closer to the action he is a real leader on the field seldom silent and exuding effort. He reminds me quite a lot of Mark Patterson in the early nineties. He was in and out and initially used to play on the left of midfield or out wide and flickered but did not always impress. However in a masterstroke he started to play in midfield and became captain and for a season or two was superb. I have etched in my memory an outstanding game he once played at Pride Park against Derby. I suspect that if we go to 4-4-2 or 4-5-1 and slotKaracan in the centre of midfield he will have a similar effect. I'd go further. He looks like he could be a good captain and has of course experience with Reading.
Cullen is doing well. He is neat enough, can hold the ball and will attempt forward passses .He is a tenacious tackler and saved a goal with a back tackle last weekHe is inexperienced though and got too easily dispossessed for their first goal yesterday. If we do not expect too much too soon- and at present he is our sole playmaker- he'll be an asset for as long as we keep him. And ditto Burke who this season has looked our ablest and most Championship suited dfender. Maybe he or Derik could in time play a role in defensive midfield.
I have this argument with a respected BWFC fan. Is Pratley captain, leader, high energy asset or an intermittently influential clumsy liability? The answer is probably a bit of both . We have seen good and bad. Indeed yesterday he had a good start to the game.We know he can ( could?) get the odd goal. We also know he wil be injured before long. I thought yesterday he was getting in everyone's way and late ion derby were toying with his inadequacies- playing round him, chipping over him and running round and so on. Solution- If I could I would sell him before 31 August so that he is not the elephant in the room in terms of selection, captaincy or whatever else. He is a good servant but I cannot see him adding to the team anytime soon? Can anyone?
A back three with Dervite and Beevers on its flanks will be wide open to pace attacks and diagonal runs unless we sort out the protection in front. And when Wheatre returns the same will hold true- Wheater and Beevers cannot be exposed to runs from deep. I thought Dervite was static for both goals and too far off the pace. He undoubtedly is quite strong in tackles and has played reasonably. He crossed the ball for our goal. But his distribution is awful for the most part and we know, don't we , that he just isn't good enough at this level? I think we have to go to a back four and I don't see Dervite in that at right back. Another reason for this is that Taylor whilst not our weakest player by any means is a fish out of water at this level if played at wing back. Every ball to him was passed back. hHe cannot go forward if marked and oppositions have clocked this. He's also not a midfielder. Goal one occurred because he was nowhere near close enough to hs man. Karacan did his level best to catch up and nearly did but the original defensive mistake was Taylor's . I'd be happy for him to revert to left back. And late in a game if he was behind someone who could cover he could still press forward from deep
Is Madine our strength or our problem? As ever yesterday he put in a shift but there were lots of occasions when he didn't go for balls or affected to be fouled. And he didn't really find Armstrong or Le Fondre the whole match- jsut once to Armstrong in the first half but he did improve a bit when Wilbraham came on and indeed Wibraham assisted his goal quite skilfully. But nearly all the hoofs come back from him. He is ot SKD running 30 yds to challnege for a high ball- his maximum is ten and it is so much easier to defend. he also wilts easily and his body language can be variable. We have seen it before at this level. I feel we need a 4-5-1 option and Madine is not a 1. I have warmed to him a bit last season and there's no doubt that without him we are currently blunt but that need not always be the case. I feel we need a model that brings more midfielders into the box in support especially on breakaways. last year Vela offered this and prehaps he will again but can we afford to play Madine all the time- I'm not sure. I think that fi we are to socre goals we need more mobility and diagonal running form a lead forward.
Finally the 23 rule is preventing Jake Turner from playing a role. Is he good enough? He is probably about the age Jussi was when he began to emerge. Howard and Alnwick just don't look good enough at this level. We used to argue the relative merits and demerits of Bogdan and Lonergan last time we were in the division but both were surely better than what we seem to have now.
So over to PP. Can he make what I would argue , especially with injured players in the wings, are the relatively minor adjustments to set us moving forward more positively especailly against the division's weaker teams and especially at home.He will bebettertter judged when we know the answer. For now he ought to be in credit

Well fancy giving another team a two goal start how easy was that it was like shelling peas they just strolled through bang two goals and it should have been more but for poor finishing. I said to my nephew and anybody else around me who would listen we will win the second half sure enough we did with our one and only shot on target two minutes into added time. I don't want to get pissed off but that was crap the only player to hold is head up a bit was Burke and he ain't ours. There was missed tackles, missed passes no shots I felt for the fans that left early cause they missed our goal and that was all they had to cheer us up for 94 minutes it's going to be a long season unless a miracle happens.

Some very good and well thought out ideas there Andy but alas, just like last season when similar things were muted, old Parky carried on with his hoof it up style irrespective of who was fit and who wasn't and I don't see this year being any different. Basically, what you are suggesting is exactly what PP should be looking at but sadly we all know he won't and for me that's why he'll always fail at this level and above. It isn't just the players who are better in this league but the managers as well. Rowett yesterday had his side fully briefed on how to beat us because he knew exactly how Parky would set up. Did Parky respond and change things when it was clear it wasn't working? No, just as he never does and never will. Really good managers adapt, change things to suit. Managers like Parky just don't have that and sadly they never will. Don't expect Parky to change because he won't, never has and we'll still start next game with Madine and Pratley for sure as well as a static back three. Makes you want to weap really.

Were you saying this into the mirror Phil? You are the Manager ffs!
"We have got to learn quickly,” he told The Bolton News. “If you’d watched the Leeds game you’d maybe say we haven’t learned a thing."
“In the last home game we went direct too much into Gary Madine. In this game we hardly hit him at all,” he said. “If teams are locking on in midfield then the ball has to go into the front player. We did that better late in the game.
“You have to play the right ball at the right time. Too many times we went short into midfield and then back again, which is frustrating.
“If it has to go long to Gary, hit it long. If it has to go down the side for Adam Le Fondre, do it. But the selection wasn’t right.”
As the much misattributed quote says - (Whoever said it was correct) " "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing year after year and expecting different results"
