If you can't stand that Chris on Tower Jack D. And Sunbed are on Radio Manc.95.1 fm and internet bbc.co.uk/radiomanchester or something similar according to JD. Good score - well done lads. What a crap commentary I've sat through. I don't listen to Jack Dearden because he insists on telling us we are listening to "BBC Radio Manchester" every 2 minutes but these 2 on Tower have either complained about the stanchions blocking their view or tried to be the stereotypical laugh a minute Scouse Joker. Terrible reporting. Anyway, sounds like a decent performance so far - under pressure but solid.

Sutton progressing. Shame about tonight but they obviously had too much strength in depth.
We used 2 of our 3 subs in the 88th and 90th minute. For a team looking dogged and tired I was amazed at this. If we lose at the weekend to couple the Swindon defeat this might backfire on PP.
Proctor and Taylor C always the first to get on. They offer absolutely nothing. Both are Sunday league players.

Very useful time to make them substitutions PP!!!!!!! And it took you until 78 minutes to realise how 5hit Gary Madine really is
Back to the league now, time to see how Sunbeds Sar'fend will fare against us!! Worrying times

Yes, the ever so productive Thorpe/Madine partnership strikes again. It was another decent performance by the lads overall against a PL team but oh how it highlighted what a proper goalscorer looks like when Benteke came on and potted his two chances. I can see us going backwards quickly now if Parky doesn't have a serious change of mindset and cut this punting up to an ineffective buffoon. For goodness sake Parkinson, change it, replace Thorpe with Derik and Madine with anyone because he's a pure liability week in week out. I'm not disappointed with tonight's result but I will be if we surrender to Southend with the same toothless team again at weekend.

First time I’ve seen them ‘in the flesh’ since Millwall away and I took away a lot of positives from it. Yes, Palace deserved their win but we gave them a game. Unless something untoward happens a top six finish is well within reach. More so, if we get Ameobi back and a striker.
The main positives are fitness, attitude and the defence. The players are very fit and went hard at it for the whole game. I didn’t see them run out of steam towards the end and they are fighters.
The defence was excellent under some severe pressure from some very tricky and quick players. Fortunately, until Benteke came on they had no one who could get on the end of what they created. The centre halves struggled against him and whilst I think that they are excellent for Division1 I think they might begin to struggle in the Championship. Alnwick commanded his area and made an excellent close range stop from a header. Wilson held his own for the most part against Townsend though he got beaten by him to put in the cross for the winner. Taylor is a steady full back who reads the game well. To supplement the defence Spearing and Thorpe did well in breaking up attacks and trying to get attacks started.
As ever it’s in the attacking midfield and upfront where the problems start and the tactics that go with them. Madine gets a lot of stick on here but he has a thankless task. He often got on the end of the upfield punt tonight but as there was no one near him in support the Palace defence was able to control him with ease. The two centre halves played close together, one of the full backs and a defensive midfielder were always in close attendance so at 4 against 1 he didn’t get very far. But he did win the ball from Vela’s free kick that set up Henry for his goal.
The punt is obviously in play because of our limited options in creating anything. Henry is a poor substitute for Ameobi on this showing despite his goal. Vela seems to have lost weight and picked up some pace but doesn’t create a lot though he is good for some dangerous shots. Clough was kept well under control with his lack of pace against Premiership defenders very evident. He had a couple of half chances but never really threatened. However, at Div 1 level these four are probably good enough.
There seem to be moves afoot to get in new blood to support them and maintain the promotion push.
I’m going to Southend on Saturday so it will be interesting to compare the two performances so close together.

The Kraken: a superb, balanced analysis without any of the histrionics, exaggerations and one-eyed views that undermine other posts. I certainly agree that PP has instilled a fighting spirit in the squad, so that words like "gutless" are unfair. Many of our forward players now track back effectively; PP even got Ameobi to help the midfield and defence in a way I would have thought unlikely. We need him back; he offers pace and trickery that we do not have elsewhere.
We are much fitter under this regime than under other recent managers; the transformation in Vela's ground-coverage and role in the team is remarkable. Give credit where it's due.
We've all recognised that Madine needs someone to play on his shoulder and I'm sure Parky will be looking to fill that position in the window; he is not stupid! (though I agree that his substitutions tend to take place rather late). Clough is perhaps a bit frail to fill that role if we can't get anyone else in January, but he may be worth a try since his skills are compromised by his current relative isolation on the left flank. But who would then attack down the left side is then another issue! Oh for two wing-backs like Spurs'!
I agree that Derik needs to play.... in his best position, offering something that Thorpe doesn't.......but overall the team has made progress under PP, halting the inexorable slide overseen by a succession of failed managers since BSA.
I look forward to your Southend report, TK.

Much as I agree that Parky has steadied the ship and improved the team immeasurably from his predecessors I do think he is weak in other areas. I accept that he knows more than than me and sees the players all week but it's his continued failure to at least attempt something different up front that bothers me. We get the same punt up to Madine every week without fail. However hard he may work he is one of the worst and least effective forwards we've ever had, has no particular saving attributes and contributes little to our attack. I realise we're not blessed with strikers but he makes no attempt to improve things which clearly aren't working. This in my opinion will cost us in the long run. He now has the transfer window to prove that view wrong and I massively hope he will. He has instilled huge confidence in the team who are as you say Joanna, are much fitter and the whole atmosphere around the club is better. That said I find him intransigent and somewhat negative in his team selection and substitutions. We know from his performances to date that Derik is much more positive and skilful than Thorpe yet he sits on the sidelines. As I say, he may transform the team in the window but sadly I wouldn't bet on it.

Can't really add to or disagree with what TK has posted..it was a good, hard-working performance, and despite the result an enjoyable trip. The defence was far more assured than it was against Swindon, it was just a shame that Big Sam had recourse to Benteke from the bench, they were being troubled less and less until his introduction. I too would like to see Derik used more often, and although I thought Thorpe had a good game last night and can understand the manager's faith in him, Derik shows good anticipation and can move the ball more quickly, accurately and incisively in terms of helping start attacking moves....he ought to start more home games at least. The absence of a natural left-sided midfielder does limit attacking options...Clough had two decent chances that fell to him where he is most effective, in and around the opposition penalty area...against League 1 opposition he can cut in from the left to good effect, but he is not physically strong or quick enough against good, strong defenders to be as effective with that ploy. Madine did work hard again, I do wonder whether or not Procter should sometimes be brought on alongside him as happened early on in the season, especially when the punt is necessary to chase games. Until, or unless other attacking options become available it seems that Clough and Clayton will have to persevere with being utilised away from their comfort zone.. this might be enough to bring success in the league, particulary if Vela and Spearing remain fit and are not the subject of transfer deals, but things would look a lot healthier if a couple of effective incoming deals could be achieved to help P.P. utilise his squad even more effectively than he has thus far...whatever the window brings I think there should be more to come from the current squad, and hopefully enough to get a good result at Southend on Saturday.

Question?
If it was a choice between Phil Neal's Bolton or Phil Parkinson's Bolton Which would you choose???
Given that, in Neals team he had goal scorers from defence to midfield. They weren't prolific, granted, but they all weighed in with many more goals than Parkinson's squad. From Robbie Savage to Mark Came, Dean Crombie to Paul Comstive, Reeves Henshaw Philliskirk, Burke Walker, Brown, crikey, even chicken legs got in on the act, the only downer being that Neal used to bore the life out of me with undesirable 1-0 games or struggling 1-1's that turned into 1-2 defeats. Point I'm making is this, is there much to compare between the two or am I being unfair to Parkinson? I don't believe our league position is false as there are so many poor or average teams that a few wins or losses could see the league turn against the grain.

Point I'm making is this, is there much to compare between the two or am I being unfair to Parkinson? I don't believe our league position is false as there are so many poor or average teams that a few wins or losses could see the league turn against the grain. To be honest rftr, I don't think I'd choose either of them if I had a choice as both are negative minded. I do fully appreciate the financial restraints but often feel they are used as an excuse not a good reason. Whatever you say about it, we have one of the strongest squads in the division yet we don't play like it. As you say, the standard in Div 1 is incredibly low and we've lost many points that we should have easily taken. Personally, the league position means little to me as an example of how good or bad we are. If you look at Freedman's first year, we went on a stellar run that nearly got us into the play offs but anyone who saw those games would know how incredible our luck was. I feel to a degree, the same about Parky. I'm sorry, I know a lot will disagree with me but I don't see success under him. Despite the obvious lack of goals, what has he tried to cure it? Nothing is the answer. He's happy to sit on his laurels whilst we hope for a lucky break and chew our nails to the bone holding on. That's not good enough for me and whilst I accept things seem much better, I believe any of Freedman, Lennon or Coyle coming in could have done at least as well in this division. So, the answer to you is neither as both are a shadow of our really successful managers like Greavesy, Rioch and BSA who all knew that scoring more goals than the other team is how to be successful. Persevering with the likes Madine is just an insult to the shirt.
