So interesting listening to Mark Hateley and his time at Rangers (TalkSport) this morning
“If our midfielders stopped and put a foot on the ball, they wouldn’t play for Walter (Smith) again. Get the ball up to the strikers and fight for the first and second ball”
Maybe that’s why Rangers were formidable under WS
I do love it when I hear simple instructions that garner massive profits. Perhaps I’m too old fash but simple will always better complication
Cloughie was the master of it
Kenny Burns “we didn’t train like other teams did, we just shoot and if we can’t shoot, pass it to someone that can” - “Training was Hop Scotch, beach footy, running on sandy beaches followed by a few beers”
Cloughie didn’t have performance coaches, data analysts, directors of football etc, sometimes I do think we over complicate the most simple things in football. I know these things worked for BSA and he was a pioneer in this country, but he was also a one off.
Just get the ball in the oppositions 25 yard box and let the midfielders and strikers cause havoc, that way, our opponents will struggle to give our midfielders and defence any cause for concern
Simples ……..

I think a good example of that Rioch was Peterborough the other night. For 80 minutes they passed and passed and passed and eventually decided to attempt the occasional cross which most often just hit the first man but then when they got desperate they brought on the big guys and started peppering the danger area and looked a different team. In a way Barnsley pretty much did the same at the Reebok the other night when they had no other option. How many times have we said that instead of just more like for like changes when chasing games against packed defences just get one of our big defenders up there and bang the ball in. Like you I’m a bit dubious about all these stats and believe that some day a manager of a big club is going to reinvent the wheel by realising it really is as simple as a little and large pairing up top, of which we could name many I’m sure. 😁
