What a difference 45 minutes makes in football. At Half time at Fratton Park I was sure we'd have a chance to get back into the game and although they had strengths, set pieces especially, thought we'd get another chance. And we still had Dempsey, Mendes Gomes, Vic and Morley to come on. Who knows maybe late it was time for Jerome to come and make himself a hero?
Nope. We did nothing. And once again we showed our soft gooey centre. We showed we had zero contingency plan. We showed we don't like those physical battles and it's even made me question if we were to get promoted do we have a full season of this? League one 80% of teams will allow us to "spar". Championship is no head gear and proper gloves. It's the real fight every single week. The only reason why I'd still like to go up rather than another year honing our skills in L1 is that I cannot see any change at all 12 months down the line.
Anyway, We don't need to be better than Pompey this season. They can go ahead like a runaway train for me. We need to be better than POSH(they will allow their players to go, who can they recruit) and Derby (who you feel will strengthen again now they're back in the promotion hunt)
Saturdays game is huge. Will we derail completely or get back on track? Truth is it is hard to know. You feel only Bolton could go on that 8 game winning run, conceding a single goal and then look so vulnerable. I'd hope that we can rebuild that confidence quickly and get back to strong winning ways but I have doubts.
Heart says 3-0, head says a battling 1-1.

I expect an unconvincing 2-1 victory.

I’m really concerned about this one. Rovers aren’t a bad side at all and have some really good players and I’d expect them to make a strong run in the second half of the season. After Monday I fear for us on this one and until the players prove they’re over their weakness I’m much less confident than I should be. No doubt Matty Taylor will have seen and learned from Monday and how fragile we are when teams press high and I’d expect him to do the same. Yet again on Monday it proved how unprepared Evatt is to change styles when things aren’t working. From what he said later about us not doing the things we’d practised he obviously ant half time instructed his players to bunker down and stop hitting the ball forward. Pompey on the other hand had clearly been told to press higher and guess who was right? Some of the passes out by Baxter were just suicidal with players quickly closed down leading to panic. I’m blaming Evatt squarely for this one for both his stubbornness and his inability to read a game and change it where necessary. We were bullied only because we allowed ourselves to be not because we are physically or mentally weak. Some call for a strong leader on the pitch but that’s not Evatt. The players have to do exactly what he says or they won’t play. I do like Evatt but he does have some glaring weaknesses. However, we’re still second in the league and could have a nice little cushion by Christmas if results go our way so maybe I’m being a bit over critical after one defeat to the top team? Sadly though I fear another upset so 0-1 to Rovers I’m afraid. 🥴

It’s such a strange but very weak league is League One with plenty of confusing results
Bristol Rovers have
Won 6 Drew 7 Lost 6 For 25 Against 26 Points 25
They’ve beaten Northampton, Carlisle, Port Vale, Shrewsbury, Charlton and they also thumped Wigan 4-1 They’ve drawn away at Portsmouth 1-1 and drawn V Barnsley, then got beat by Derby, so like W63 says, we can’t take them lightly
Shrewsbury, just above BR, sit 11th with 27 points BUT, they’ve only scored just 13 goals to get there (only Exeter and Cheltenham scored less)
If we can’t get a decent home result against these then we should stop right now and have a rethink on where we are going and who will get us there
I predicted a draw at Pompey at the very least and we got shown up, so I’ll save predicting to others
COYWM ⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️⚽️ Make our CHRISTMAS a happy one 🎄 🎅🏼🎄🧑🎄🎄🤶🎄🧑🎄🎄🎅🏼🎄🤶🎄🧑🎄🎄🎅🏼🎄🤶🎄

That’s not like you - you are normally in the ultra-positive camp like me, Yes, Monday was poor and we were deservedly beaten but it is the first defeat in many matches. We are more than capable of going on another long unbeaten run. Look at our upcoming fixtures:- 16/12/23 Bristol Rovers H 23/12/23 Leyton Orient H 26/12/23 Lincoln A 29/12/23 Fleetwood A 01/01/24 Burton H 13/01/24 Cheltenham H 20/01/24 Leyton Orient A 27/01/24 Carlisle A 03/02/24 Barnsley H There is a great opportunity for another unbeaten run

You wait for one and then two arrive together and I just have this sneaky feeling that we’re going to be nervous again tomorrow and come a cropper again. Before the Pompey game I was as you say, ultra positive but what I saw so depressed me that I still haven’t recovered. On the other side of it I won’t be there tomorrow or even able to listen because I’m taking my 7 year old granddaughter on the Polar Express in Wensleydale at 1pm so when I see her face I won’t even be thinking of the game so I hope I’m pleasantly surprised when I do see the score later? So Pyjamas at the ready, chuff chuff chuff woohoo 🤣🎄🚂

A definite “must-win” game today to make up for Monday night.
As I said in my earlier post, we have a relatively easy run of fixtures coming up – in fact the next 8 matches could yield 24 points. We will obviously drop points somewhere but it is a very good set of fixtures.
On to today’s match.
I would expect more or less the same side as Monday except for Dempsey replacing the suspended Sheehan.
There is maybe a toss up between Iredale and Williams for left wing back.
Hopefully, he retains the Bodvarsson/Charles combination upfront.
This should be a win as long as we start positively and quickly shake off the Portsmouth blues.
I never expect a repeat of the Exeter score but I think a reasonably comfortable 2-0 win today.

I would like to think that today’s game should be easier than Monday’s but if I’m honest I really didn’t think we could be so poor in the second half Monday night we kind of panicked a bit and aloud Portsmouth to bully and boss us about and that’s why I think today we will be the ones doing the bossing so at them from the off 3-1 COYWM
