A tremendous result from a difficult match.
First half we were not quite on it and Blackpool enjoyed a fair share of the play but second half we upped it and deservedly won.
We started as we often do – quite tentative and allowed Blackpool to come at us. Santos misjudged a high ball and let it bounce and from the resulting scramble Blackpool got a shot in which hit the outside of the post.
They also had a few free kicks which scared us a little but no other real clear cut chances.
Blackpool seemed to have targeted Sheehan and he was chopped down 3 or 4 times early on – all by different players and therefore they got away with it. Sheehan then tripped their man and was booked. A reasonable booking but considering the fouls that Blackpool committed a bit uneven. Maghoma was also booked for diving and then Rhodes was penalised for diving and no punishment.
We created very little.
We just could not get past their defensive lines and a lot of play was centred around Baxter, Toal and Santos. Bordering on walking football.
The nearest we came was when we had a free kick that Williams shot at goal. I thought the keeper had saved it but the ref gave a goal kick so it must have skimmed the post.
Second half, we pressed further up but Adeboyejo was appalling. His first touch was awful so we continually lost the ball. We had one move where the ball came to him 30 yards out. We actually had 4 men up with him screaming for a pass but he messed about, eventually turned and shot 15 yards wide.
Chances were few and far between and thankfully Adeboyejo was eventually replaced by Bodvarsson.
What a difference that made.
The ball suddenly stuck when played forward. Bodvarsson and Charles linked up well together and then we had a lovely passing move which ended up at Bodvarsson’s feet on the edge of the box. Everyone screamed for him to shoot but he brilliantly laid it into the path of Thomason who put a rocket shot into the net. A cracking goal.
Blackpool then had to press forward and we had a few finger nail biting minutes but, in reality, we held out reasonably well.
As I say a tremendous result. Not an outstanding performance but a good performance in a match that we probably would not have won last season.
Well done
Marks:-
Baxter - 6 Nothing much to do and he did it OK
Dacres-Cogley - 6 Couldn’t get forward as much as he would have wanted but did fine
Jones - 7 Very solid in a good defence
Santos - 9 A tower of strength again. Totally dominated Jordon Rhodes
Toal - 7 Good again. A few stray forward passes
Williams - 6 Defensively a bit iffy but linked up well
Thomason - 7 A couple of excellent forward passes to set up chances and then a rocket of a shot for the winner
Maghoma - 7 Some lovely skilful play. A few passes missed their mark but a good performance
Sheehan - 7 Seemed to be targeted by Blackpool who must have fouled him 6 or 7 times. Kept the side ticking over.
Adeboyejo - 4 Terrible. Hopeless ball control again and just no footballing skill. Plus a chance of a headed tap in just before he was subbed which he seemed to chicken out of.
Charles - 6 Very busy. His one real chance was saved by the keeper
Bodvarsson - 7 Excellent. How Adeboyejo can start in front of him is a mystery. Held the ball up well and set Thomason up for the goal
Morley - 5 Did see much of him when he came on

What a superb winner! We’ve seen a few such central shots down the years. Frandsen, Okocha and Holden leap to mind but that was as good as any and will be remembered in similar vein. It was all the better for Bodvarsson’s confident assist, I reckon Thomason’s value shot up to £2m in a moment.
I was speaking to a fan at a bus stop afterwards and he rated Blackpool as the best visitors this season. They certainly impressed and in style mirrored us.
In the first half both posts made a save and we all but conceded when Adeboyejo lost his man at the end of our high line. Fortunately he didn’t fully connect
For my taste we are too slow to build up but Sheehan is becoming a Welsh wizard in that deep role. He allows both Thomason to play in a more attacking role and Maghoma has license to carry the ball. In the first half Maghoma took the eye regularly as our main threat.
In amongst the measured play we made some horrible passes and this disjointed us. We also took bookings. The referee wasn’t very good today- too distant and seemingly colour blind to tangerine.
Second half, it felt like one of those games where Rhodes scores in the 89th. But, we did get a bit of impetus going forward. The defence pushed forward. Thomason slotted Charles through delightfully. Their keeper was looking hard to beat. But the arrival of Bodvarsson for Adeboyejo changed everything, We had 11 trying for a start. Once just before Charles ran 360 degrees round Adeboyejo to chase and tackle on the opposite flank Victor alas held up nothing at all. He had a wild shot and really should have had the momentum to bundle one in on the line. Bodvarsson in contrast controlled the ball, looked for near post chances. Won headers and let them feel his presence. He must start at Oxford surely.
I thought Charles had his best game for a while. Williams didn’t but he hit two superb shots, the post- hitting free kick left and near post daisy cutter right so good for him.
In the end though Thomason came of age,
Baxter 6 Jones7 Santos 8 Toal 7 Williams 7 Sheehan 9 Thomason 9 Dacres-Cogley-Cowley 6 Charles 8 Adeboyejo 2 Maghoma8 Bodvarsson 7

Poor Victor, he is so enthusiastic, but sadly I think he should be playing at a lower level.

No one can make an argument for Adeboyejo now especially after that awful shot Not even you W63🤪 EDIT: Oh My Word Adeboyejo only had to tap his head on that… thank the lord he’s gone off - 62 minutes too late if you ask me I didn’t see the game today rioch but it sounds like Victor was his usual self, lots of effort but no class. I did think after his very impressive cameo on Tuesday that Bod might just have got a start today but sadly not. Surely after impressing again he must get a chance next time which will probably be against Stockport and if he does well in that then surely he has to partner Dion until Victor puts his boots on the correct foot!! As for the result today, that goes without saying though I did think we might win more comfortably. We’re right down the necks of Oxford and Pompey now, quite a feat when you think where we were a few weeks ago and with that game in hand on those below us could really put some daylight there. Big games coming up but as well as ourselves Oxford also have to play Pompey so once we’re back from the International break things could move very quickly? 🤗

Great comments above, that is the game I was watching. Adaboyejo has surely had enough chances now? Why don't we see more "rockets" like Thomason's ?

Great comments above, that is the game I was watching. Adaboyejo has surely had enough chances now? Why don't we see more "rockets" like Thomason's ? I always felt Thommo had that in him Pedro and if he can just deliver it more often, even if he misses some, then he could develop into a real quality player. Some of his passes now are sublime proving he has an eye for it and if he keeps going at the present rate other bids, multiples of Bristols will surely follow. Sadly, however much I’ve tried to defend Victor and Dan, the same can not be said of them. Neither are young or growing, they’re both mature players and despite all the efforts expended by Evatt and his coaching team, neither appear to be either developing or improving. If they can’t deliver in L1 how on earth could they be expected to in the Championship if we get there? I still hope to be proved wrong but time is I’m afraid running out and that may mean tough decisions in January if there’s any money left?

The only reason we're playing Vic and Bringing Nlundulu on is because of thier price tags and that reflects on Evatt. He basically swapped Adeboyejo for Dapo and I don't think there's a single fan who thinks we got the better of that deal.
Nlundulu is the same player we had a try before we buy on him and I was baffled when we decided to make it permanent.
Now Evatts brought in Charles, Dempsey, Johnson, Etc so its not like he needs to be so stubborn but he's got these badly wrong. January could we recoup £500k on the pair of them?

There are those writing on the BN site - maybe Marc Iles himself - consoling themselves about Adebayejo's performances by claiming he puts in a lot of challenges. I haven't even seen that and agree the Dapo money was wasted in buying him. He was one of the two worst men on the field on Saturday, the other being referee Ben Toner. I am not so solidly in agreement over Dan. I think there is a footballer inside that lithe frame. He has speed and power and makes tackles. At some time he is going to get it altogether I feel, and I think Ian Evatt is right, to persevere for a while to see if he can get it altogether for us.

Main issue with Nlundulu is it seems we are all just waiting for this player to come. There seems to be no seize the opportunity in him at all.
If he came from the youth set up he would have to earn his stripes, bust his gut to get into the squad and do well to stay there. He seems to have had it all on a plate with nothing back.
As I said I'd love to see Carty given the same chances. (Almost 12months worth) but we all know deep down he won't get a fraction of time.

And we’ve seen Dave Challinor make 11 changes tonight and the amount of chances we’ve created, 10-0 would not be an unfair result and yet STILL Nlundulu can’t find the target Seriously been some awful misses when easier to plant the ball in the onion bag, Maghoma, Morley, Nlundulu and a few others It’s also got to be a very poor do when you get subbed in a meaningless game

Well young Connor Cartys just won the Irish cup in front of a record crowd there so surely he’s earned an opportunity here when he comes back given the circumstances? The problem is that Victor and Dan are on good money and long contracts so it probably means Carty will go back out on loan somewhere again. Bod showed tonight at Stockport how to finish with two cool goals whilst others just had no composure and wasted chances yet again. Victor had two good opportunities and wasted both and once again Dan showed some skill but again never looked like scoring. The thing is I’m sure he has it in him so whether it’s a confidence thing or something I don’t know but whatever abilities he’s got he’s there to score goals and he basically just doesn’t!! 🤨

I think Conor scored 4 goals this season and his contract is up in the Summer. Due to international rules he cannot play for us until the transfer season opens. He needs to have shown improvement over the time he has been in Ireland to have his contract renewed. Good luck to him.

On the subject of ‘Connors’
Connor Bradley is nearing a return to full fitness but there’s absolutely no room for him in Liverpools first team, could we not make use of his services once again with another loan in January, or has his space been filled?
On another subject and ex loanee, James Trafford has been potted 30 times in the Prem after just 12 games, if he carries on in this vein, he could see himself beaten 90 times in a season which cannot be good for a young prospect who was at the top of his game (albeit for the England U21’s and 3rd Division BWFC) He was a big fish in a small pond once, whereas now, he’s a small fish in an even smaller pond, messing around in an ocean Poor lad, can’t be doing his career any favours at all
