Lost 1-0 don't get me wrong the football is a dam site better than we have seen in years but for the love of God once in a while can we not just put the ball in the fxcking box all this pretty passing between the back 4 there has to be some end product 'cause at the moment we are struggling to put teams under pressure another frustrating game. Onwards and upwards stay safe one and all COYWM

Looks great on paper but unless we score goals it's just stats and the main one is lost 1-0 we will play lesser teams and win but at the moment it's frustrating. COYWM

Interesting look at the league table
We are joint 8th and joint 15th as well (save for goal difference)
No doubt we’ll get all the plaudits from Lee Johnson but it was all us second half and we still can’t get the ball in the onion bag That August window could come back to haunt Evatt as we’ve done without Baka and Ameichi for too many games

How did we lose that game?
We did enough in the 1st half to be on equal terms and, apart from the first 2 minutes and last 5, we dominated the 2nd half.
But we lost because, as with Cambridge and Burton, we play good football but are totally toothless in the final quarter.
We started slowly and, as usual, conceded the first goal.
Isgrove was appalling defensively as he let their left back get pass him and clear along the by-line to set up a shot and the goal. He was just fast asleep and weak.
He actually nearly repeated the error a few minutes later when he tried to dribble in his own half and was caught.
We worked ourselves back into the game. Doyle touched a Jones cross just wide, Sarcevic miskicked a glorious chance from a short corner and Doyle got the ball stuck between his legs when an Afolayan shot was fumbled by the keeper.
Add to them a good number of crosses from the excellent Jones and we shouldn’t have been behind at half time.
Second half, we slept for a few minutes and Sunderland missed, although I should say Dixon saved, in a clear one on one with the keeper but then we got on top and dominated
For all our domination some of our forward passing was abysmal.
Afolayan got free down the left 3 or 4 times and first Gordon and then Sheehan messed up simple opportunities to put him away with shockingly bad balls.
Doyle continues to get half chances and miss them and the keeper saved well from a Doyle header.
Johnston then managed to volley wide from a great position.
In the above, I refer to half chances, which is what they were. We had many, 7 or8, half chances but we created 0 clear cut chances. The final ball from the midfield was poor and the midfield pair of Sheehan and Sarcevic rarely got forward into attacking positions.
Sunderland should have wrapped it up in the final few minutes when we were pressing upfield but messed up 2 great chances to score.
Overall we should not have lost – we should have won - but that is now 4 out last 5 games when we have failed to score.
Marks:-
Dixon - 8 Excellent save at the start of the second half. Played well
Jones - 8 Our attacking main stay in the first half
Gordon - 5 Defensively OK but some awfully poor passes
Johnston - 7 Steady but missed a glorious chance in the 2nd half
Santos - 7 A bit off in the first half but back too his best in 2nd.
Williams - 7 Usual good steady play
Sarcevic - 5 Moved around a lot but, in all honesty, created nothing. Missed a great chance in first half.
Sheehan - 5 Looked lost. Some really slack poor passing.
Afolayan - 6 Busy as usual but, as I keep saying, his final balls create little. Spends too much time looking to be fouled.
Isgrove - 4 Desperately poor for the goal and almost repeated it minutes later.
Doyle - 5 I have regularly supported him on here but he had 4 or 5 half chances and scored none.
Kachunga - 5 As Diana Ross says – I’m still waiting – not seen anything from him to give hope

Said last season and again in this, when you dont score from set pieces it puts huge pressure on. We have made no improvements on that front and I think Evatt has got to take that personally.
I know some teams are now employing set piece coaches, even throw in specialist. They are not Stoke, Burton, etc. This is Liverpool and Villa that play the game on the grass for the main.
With Dapo drawing fouls from wide play, we are likely to have set pieces and corners in spades and we either go backwards almost like we dont want them.
Just make life easier and dont fear scoring an ugly header or following in one.

I think it’s the scoring side of the game that is our obvious weakness OM and is it any coincidence that all our management and coaches are defenders? My main criticism of Owen Coyle was that he didn’t recruit a good defensive coach because I’m sure if he had, results would have been different. Now we have the exact reverse and I’d like to see IE recruit an offensive coach, or even bring in the likes of SKD or SJM to work with the players, as I’m sure they’d be more than happy to help out. I respect Evatt’s confidence in himself but I also detect a bit of arrogance sometimes in that he thinks he has the answer to everything. He needs to show a little more humility and accept there are some areas in which he might need help and I think scoring is obviously the main one.

Totally agree goals win game’s we can be as pretty in passing the ball around our teammates but all said and done we need an end product. It will be interesting to see how the two players that Ian is hoping can help us out get on still a long way until January for us to get any reinforcements in. Onwards and upwards stay safe one and all COYWM
