Really looking forward to going to this match. Very confident.
Mind you, I said exactly the same before the Rotherham match!
I should think of the lottery numbers – I am becoming Mystic Meg!
That was a total embarrassment.
Embarrassing with a shambolic performance on the pitch and embarrassing from a moronic performance by the fans. We had flares yet again (someone will be hurt one day), countless bottles thrown on the pitch and then 2 morons running on to the pitch. We may have a good number of supporters but fan-wise we were also a disgrace today.
This game was so similar to the Rotherham match – we score first and then collapsed.
We set off well and after pressure from our corners, Verlinden jinxed through and centred for Murphy D to score at the far post. Decent goal and Accrington were there for the taking.
Accrington just took over though and prior to the sending off had 2 great chances that they missed. In both cases Chicksen was skinned (maybe he had no help but they walked round him) – the first resulted in a chance 6 yards out that Wright blocked well and then the centre forward, who later scored 2, was totally unmarked 10 yards out and headed wide. Accrington should have scored both of those.
Then came the penalty.
Yet again we were wide open, first in midfield and then Earl finished up defending one on one with their attacker. He tackled when he should have stood off and, I thought unluckily, was deemed to have tripped him. The referee gave a penalty and nothing else. The Accrington players then surrounded the ref and after 30 seconds he produced the red card. Disgusting from the Accrington players and farcical from the ref. If a red card is shown every time a player is fouled in the box, I give up.
The match was gone then.
Midfield was non existent, out tackled, caught in possession and rank bad passing.
The defence continued to be wide open. The manager chose to put Bridcutt at centre half. It did not work.
Goal no 2 came when again Chicksen was skinned down their right. Centre comes in, man unmarked, easy header. Wright and Bridcutt what were you doing?
Goal 3 came from a woeful pass from Lowe which got us caught out. Ball down the right (see the pattern here?) centre to far post. Emmanuel standing 10 yards off his man who shot and ball deflected off Emmanuel past Matthews.
The manager then changed the defence and brought Zouma on for O’Grady. 2 goals too late methinks.
The second half was a shambles. Accrington hit long balls over our full backs endlessly. Their front men ran into space while we stood still and watched. We were awful.
We had about 2 attacks – one which Lowe missed a sitter from 6 yards out
And the goals just kept going in – a lot just basic tap-ins with our defence frozen to the spot.
There will be complaints about the referee. The sending off was a terrible decision but we were shocking.
We gave up at 3-1 down.
We were out-thought, out-tackled just absolute rubbish.
Marks:-
Matthews - 4 Kept the score down with a couple of good saves.
Emmanuel - 2 Defensively rank bad.
Chicksen - 1 MOM last week – Slaughtered today.
Wright - 3 A couple of decent blocks but he should be organising this defence and he was dragged all over the show.
Earl Amateurish tackle for the penalty.
Bridcutt - 2 Really really poor. Caught in possession endlessly.
Murphy L - 3 Just nowhere to be seen in the game.
Lowe - 3 A stream of really poor passes, one which led to goal no 3.
Verlinden - 3 Set up the goal but then faded so badly.
O’Grady - 2 Substituted early on to allow Zouma on but, in all honesty, had done nothing.
Murphy D - 3 Scored again and got little support. Could not hold the ball up.
Dodoo - 3 Wasted a couple of opportunities to get goal attempts.
Zouma - 3
