I was never at the extreme edge of the anti-Freedman camp but it was so good not to be exposed to counter attacks from wingers frolicking irresponsibly and it was good to see selection and subs which were logical especially after explanation. Also there wasn't a hint of favouritism. All our recent managers have struggled in these areas

Yes I don't want to bog everyone down with negativity but also worth remembering that Dougie kicked off his reign with a 2-1 home win against promotion bound Cardiff and Neil Lennon even managed an away win and a clean sheet in his first game so no doubt that the hard work is still to come. My point was that really Clarke should have put them in front and how many games would we ever come back to win from, 30 yard strikes are great when they fly in but can't rely on them - need to create more. . The starting XI on Saturday was a bit off to say the least with Wilson and Buxton both in, not sure where I see Clough in this system but no doubt about it he's the star man and needs to play. Would like to see an experimental team on Tuesday with the raw pace of Woolery up front.

Up to a point I agree re Clough but he had mainly anonymous games last year as initially did Clayton. There must be concerns re the physicality of this division and their effectiveness within it. It was a rough, tough game on Saturday. I just think that if we are hard to score against and don't invite counter attacks as we did throughout Neil's tenure, then we have more prospects. We were very well organised on Saturday and we haven't often been able to say that recently.

early days but already liking the cut of PP's jib. spoke well on SSN pre-match. very calm and considered. he said first game wouldn't define the season.. clearly wanted a win but didn't want to pin all hopes on it , playing a fancied opponent. said it was more important they made a statement in terms of performance. control the controllables as any Olympian would tell you. www.theperformanceroom.co.uk/ultimately-control-is-down-to-you/you can't control the result, but you should have a fair old handle on your performance level. for once in a long time we've not had a hopeless pre-season. wasn't amazing but we did win more than we lost. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016%E2%80%9317_Bolton_Wanderers_F.C._season#Pre-seasonone of losses a narrow defeat to a side 2 lge's above us..in PL. and gained clean sheets to sides like Preston...again a side in a higher lge. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2013%E2%80%9314_Bolton_Wanderers_F.C._season#Pre-seasoncompare to Doug-loss's first pre-season....no wins...no clean sheets...despite 3 of the 4 games being against lower league opponents than the level we were preparing for. swiftly followed by the worst start to a season for 100 years. 14/15 was hardly any better. so please O.M, spare us the DF comparisons. it's one of the oldest managerial cliches in the book for any new manager...build from the back. sort the defence out. like a young boxer setting out on a career... you want to build an unbeaten run. build confidence. NL seemed more happy to be flashy, take risks but have a glass chin, as Andy rightly says above....vulnerable on the counter. also like the shrewd move by PP, not to name a no.1 keeper. he maybe suspects like i do, Amos is a good keeper but wasn't pushed hard enough for his place, and got a bit lax. get some healthy competition going. what a result too from that decision..clean sheet. ker-ching !! still much work to do. got to break that awful mental hurdle of sorting the away form out.

Loved this on Saturday's player ratings which featured on the LoV site:
"Liam Trotter (on for Jay Spearing) - 0.5
Genuinely one of the worst players we’ve ever had. Lacking in pace, desire and general ability, I’d sooner see Ben Amos play in midfield before him. Dreadful, dreadful footballer."
Who am I to argue?!!

Awww Joanna of all the positive things you could have stated, perhaps the most negative post so far this season

.....but the most accurate!
I can't say I was particularly enamoured at the weekend, except by the crowd's support and the result.
The description of your namesake amused me, Trotter......We really must inject some pace across the whole team.

Saw our best chances and goal from Saturday all came from long throws. About time we utilised this again. Let the ️footy purist scoff all they want. Last season I couldn't believe how we were so toothless and half hearted with all set pieces but especially throw ins. Already you can see movement in the box and what looks like training paying off.
So crucial when you don't have the wealth of talent, as we saw with Iceland and Allardyce it can be a weapon and a real leveller.

quite chuffed with my post from y/day after reading this today. www.theboltonnews.co.uk/sport/wanderers/14670453.MARC_ILES__39__LAST_WORD__Calm_approach_pays_off_for_Parkinson_in_opening_win/had to double check the date and timings to make sure i'd not read it the previous day, slept on it, then unwittingly re-gurgitated it myself !! last paragraph especially. stressing the calmness. relaxed but focussed. and think performance not result. control the first one and the 2nd one hopefully will follow more times than not. and hints he's giving good clear simple instructions to players. and that ties in with the earlier points in the article...crowd were getting onside because they could see the players were working hard, and knew their roles within the gameplan. while the shots on target stats didn't exactly paint a true picture of the game. still baffled as to why sheff utd didn't get at least 1 counted on target. the more pleasing aspect was total shots for each side...8 for us..just 4 for them. another reason to drop DF comparisons. his policy of sit on the edge of our box (even at home against bottom third sides!) almost always ensured they had more shots, even if he was hoping we'd be sat waiting for theirs, and ours be would surprise counters which they'd be less ready for us. pity ,of the 4 shots we conceded, almost all were quite threatening. in a way, you help create your own luck. you're not allowing the opposition strikers to find their range with a few close calls . they're starved of chances and snatching at things..think back to some of those shocking away games last season...chances every 5 mins conceded. www.s24su.com/forum/index.php?threads/wilders-first-defeat-in-2016.48236/sheff utd fan (2nd post) saying Real madrid wouldn't have broke us down in the 2nd half !!
