Phil Jones from inside the coach footage looks like he was pulling more of his classic faces

one of the best quotes i've heard this season was about the 2 Leics Centre backs, Huth and Morgan. caller to a phone -in said "they're old school centre backs who just defend & either one could wrestle a (grizzly) bear down !! "
meanwhile this is rough, tough centre back Phil Jones. not sure i'd be as nonchalant as Lingard laughing and joking during that onslaught of bottles. speaks volumes for his big match temperament as long as he is focussed and professional about his training and doesn't lark around too much at those times. got to have that balance.

I wonder if anything will be done to WHU this time? This club seems to be teflon coated, but then again they did win the world cup for England in 1966 didn't they??

Yes, ruined what should have been the headlines for an awesome game. When did we last see a match of such excitement, quality and drama, ending in a comeback win for our own team?! I'm missing those heady days of wild footballing excitement where we underdogs could put one over on the top teams. Look at how BSA is now galvanising Sunderland to perform above themselves. So nostalgic. Surely it's not hard to see (and recruit!) a manager like Sam and Warnock who can make a real difference through the strength of their personalities.....

So nostalgic. Surely it's not hard to see (and recruit!) a manager like Sam and Warnock who can make a real difference through the strength of their personalities..... well, the big Fella did it again. thought he had bitten off a bit more than he could chew at times. a bit like Redknapp at QPR. even Sam has admitted that at times, he stemmed the flow with the leaky defence but clean sheets have been much rarer than he'd have liked. 35 pts from 29 games he got them. that's more than we managed in 46 games ! www.mirror.co.uk/sport/football/news/sam-allardyce-reveals-dick-advocaat-7950454good article here..talking about the siege mentalities used to motivate players. always liked your point Joanna, re BSA's man management of potentially awkward characters like Dioufy, (sidebets with him, or promising to do the dance with Jay -jay) , said at the time when ol' Doug-loss was falling out with guys who had no history of trouble-making left right and centre. some people still don't get it. how stupid can they be !? www.statto.com/football/stats/england/premier-league/2015-2016/true-table/2015-10-04this is the table when BSA joined. 3 pt's from 8 games... 0 clean sheets. shipped 18 goals multiply up the 0.38 points per game they were sat on, over 38 games, they were on course for 0.38 * 38 = 14.44 pt's ! you ain't staying up with that. you ain't staying up with DOUBLE that !!

If a club's main priority is the defence, logic suggests a need to appoint a manager who in his time was a solid defender, as Allardyce had been.
Consider the succession of managers BW have appointed after BSA:- NOT ONE had played in defence and their managerial reign proved that they did not have the capability and experience to organise the club's defenders. How many clean sheets did we keep this season?
This time, we must appoint someone who can give us that base of a defensive shape, speed, power and alertness that allows some clean sheets that might give us a fighting chance.
From that base, a team can begin to build some forward momentum enough to win games. At the moment, we start with the near-certainty of needing to score at least 2 per game. Freedman talked along those lines but had no idea how to fulfil his philosophy; the rest simply paid little heed to the need to concede as few as possible.

Apart from BSA the only other defender of that calibre I can think of who excelled was Big Jack Charlton. I agree about our previous managers not having a defensive clue but then would a defender necessarily have an attacking clue? I think with Coyle, who seemed a pretty good man manager in fairness, it as his coaching staff who let him down. If he'd pulled back a bit himself and got good coaches in like most successful managers have he might have done much better. Not sure therefore that it makes much difference what your former position was as a player, more important to make sure you build a good, knowledgable back room team behind you.

On a football in general topic, did it not make anyone else think it was in very poor taste from journalists today. Sky Sports reported "Van Gaal attends training ground, will he be training or will he be packing his things. We'll be right there to find out"
So they're not reporting on the news. They're going to gawp on a man who might lose his job. That's low and no matter what you think of LvG got what he's achieved in his career I think he deserves more compassion than that.
Poor form all around.
